I found the coolest thing: a Happy Baby food grinder. It's a little grinder that you put table food in and crank the handle and voila, instant baby food. It's small and portable so that you can take it with you to restaurants and other places.
Yesterday, I stopped by a thrift store and found this grinder for $1.00! I looked it up on the internet and found that it retails for $14.00 plus shipping! Has anyone ever used this or a similar model? How did you like it? What were the advantages and disadvantages?

I used one for a while. It was pretty neat. I used a Tommee Tippee one. The only thing was that you have to wash it every single time you use it. I don't like extra dishes. :P Eventually I just got rid of it and grinded the food myself (ie: chewing for my babies or mashing it up real good with a fork or knife) What can I say? I'm lazy.
I don't know what brand it was, but we had one and loved it. We carried it with us whenever we'd be eating so the kids could eat whatever we had.

Me, too. Then you just pop it in a plastic bag and wash it when you get home.

I just used my food processor and did up different foods in larger batches. After mashing the food, I put it into ice cube trays and froze the food. When the food cubes were frozen I popped them into freezer bags so I just had to grab 1 cube of whatever I wanted baby to eat and heat it up.

We have a hand grinder that we love. However, you asked for adv & dis adv:
The two disadvantages I found using the hand grinder was that some foods like stiff meats are really hard to grind! And second, sometimes, it made a mess if the top popped off or if the juice ran down the edges...
But we used it a ton for when our kids were little...we never bought store baby food! As they grew older, I would do either an electric processor that I could control the chunkiness or I used a Pampered Chef Food Chopper where once again, I could control how chunky it was.
Over all, two thumbs up! [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

We bought one but never used it  . My MIL said she had one when my DH was younger and used it with all of her sons, she LOVED it!! The advantage, I think, would be not having to buy baby food and not having to prepare something different from what you and you DH would be having. The disadvantage would be another mess to clean up after. Hopefully we'll be able to use ours next time around!
What an awesome bargain Ruth, I LOVE bargains like that!
I have never used a hand baby food grinder, I had an electric one but unfortunately it burnt out one day. I used to use it all the time for the twins but I was so blessed to find a food processor on sale at Big W (Walmart) which I love!
Sure beats mushing, you can easily obtain the consistency needed with the grinders, my Mum used to have one for us.

I did use mine for some things. However I made batches of food and froze it in cube trays. If you are interested in doing this or want to know more about foods for children get the book "Super Baby Food" it is excellent. I still use it even for my 2 year old.
