View Full Version : ?Is it obvious
I am asking this out of curiosity stemming from Ruth's post about a possible fluid leak:
Wanted to know, you know my Docs are leaving it up to 10 days before my EDD to perform my caesarian (for medical reasons for ppl who don't know) and I was wondering, IF my waters did break or something before that time - it's BLATANTLY obvious isn't it? Is it like on TV when there is a puddle of water???
Spose if I suspected anything I would hightail it to my Obstetrician so never fear, I have done the whole "pre-term labour" thing before and had it stopped etc...
At least I know what "real" contractions feel like having been in pre-term labour.
e&m'sirishmum 08-17-2006, 02:49 AM My waters broke with my 1st ds and for me it felt like a little pop and then a gush of fluid, I had just come out of the shower and was thankfully standing on a towel, it was after my waters broke that my contractions started, but it still took 22 hrs of labor and c-section for the little guy to come!
I know I was concerned with my 2nd pregnancy about going into labor before the time b/c I was having a scheduled c-section, but they said they would do an emergency c-section if I did. I guess everybody is different but I would think if your waters did break you would have time to get to the hospital. I hope this helps to answer your question!
Oh with my 1st baby I had some fluid leaking earlier in the day before my water actually broke!
But you can tell it's not wee can't you?
They broke my waters with my first C-section when I was numb so I had no idea that it had even happened.
It will probably not happen that way anyways, everyone elses bubs seem to be staying put until at least around their EDD and the only reason why I had pre-term labour was because of overcrowding due to twin pregnancy.
luvmy4sons 08-17-2006, 08:06 AM Only 20% of women have their water break without being in labor. So it isn't likely to happen. It isn't always easy to tell either. Sometimes losing the mucus plug is slow and gradual and it creates a watery like substance. Sometimes it is urine and if you are well hydrated you can't always tell as the urine is clear and less aromatic. They use a ph strip to test it. Urine ph tends to be different than amniotic fluid. So they use the strip on their exam and if it turns the right color they assume the water is broken, but if it doesn't turn then they assume it isn't. Sometimes they keep you for observation to see if it leaks again. The leak can seal off with movement and the baby moving and then releak. Or it can be a high leak and leak off and on. A lot of times there can be a pop sound and LOTS of fluid that just keeps coming. Then it is very obvious. But there are lots of grey areas inbetween. Thing is: God is in control. Right? :D
breezykc2 08-17-2006, 08:13 AM My friends have all had leaking waters slowly...many thought it was bladder issues until the contractions really started in...
They finally broke my water...so it was a gush, but after they broke it, I dialted from 7 to 10 in 5 minutes and delivered three pushes and 5 minutes later! I'm worried that my water will break on its own this time or before I get there if I deliver so fast once it's broken! Yikes!
justmeNmine 08-17-2006, 09:26 AM But you can tell it's not wee can't you?
They broke my waters with my first C-section when I was numb so I had no idea that it had even happened.
with my first, my water broke and I definitely knew it. With my second however, I did mistake wee for fluid  I think I was more anxious and thought I'd have my daughter early like I had my son, also I had more cramping/contractions and began dilating with my daughter a couple weeks before I went into labor, so I think I was expecting the water to break, kwim?
Godzgirl 08-17-2006, 02:47 PM With my firstborn my water broke. I went 5 days passed my due date but was already feeling contractions every night. Well that friday night they were pretty bad but not consistent so the nurse told me not to come in yet. Well they really hurt so i told dh you know i need to go in because i'm not going to be able to sleep to night. We waited until 1:00a.m. and the contractions still weren't consistent but i couldn't take it anymore. So i told dh and he started to put the the bags in the car so i'm sitting on the sofa waiting and dealing with the contractions then my water breaks. It didn't hurt or anything and yeah water comes out. Although mine was green  which meant that the baby had pooped inside of me which can be dangerous. So i had to rush to the hospital and after 17 hrs of labor had an emergency c-section. The second time around i had a c-section right from the get go so my water didn't break since it was scheduled a week before my due date. So they do it for ya. I guess you water break could break before your c-section date and if so they would give you an emergency c-section.
I didn't have a gush. I just thought I'd wet myself  And I had no idea it wasn't that. The midwife told me. I didn't lose it all at once. It was trickling out slowly even when I was delivering Abby.
I would phone the midwife if you think your waters might have broken. Because then they have to deliver within a day otherwise you can get an infection.
HTH
Oh I was just told I would be trickling during labour because I hadn't lost all my waters when they broke. :? She said it was just slowly trickling out.
:? Also I was told I needed an U/S when I was about 10 days overdue with Abby to make sure there was enough amniotic fluid left. Why would they need to check if your body constantly produces more? :?
Geez sometimes I wonder about doctors because you get one story from one and a different one from another. It's all so confusing.
Godzgirl 08-17-2006, 08:18 PM I don't know if you keep producing amniotic fluid. :? Because while i was in labor they had to insert some kind of liquid in me because dd wasn't coming out and i had no amniotic fluid left.
love2bmom 08-17-2006, 09:51 PM I was induced with both my children. However my water broke naturally with my DS. I was still able to get up to go to the potty and Ba Bang... I think its pretty cool actually. It is the biggest gush of stuff. I was excited because I thought OH yea! Baby will soon be here - 24 hours later we had our bundle.
With DD they broke my water. A friend of mine was in the room with me & said she never saw so much fluid in her life. It is so interesting.
You will know. Oh I get so excited talking about having babies..!!!
mmm I think I have read it does replentish itself but as you get further in the pregnancy the amount decreases.
Who knows what that doctor meant... maybe there was enough fluid left for it to be okay?????
