My son Lukas 5 has been battling a horrible cold/croup/high fever the past week as has hubby and some of the other children. Except this little guy has it the worst as well as hubby.

This morning I was taken aback with Lukas' dark, purplish swollen lips and sullen appearance as he came down after his slumber. Thankful I saw this before with my oldest son when he was young. Knew right away it was dehydration. Trying to pump him full of fluids and popcicles but was wondering if you moms had any other advice?? His lips are now pinkish.

If you could pray for little Lukas he is just having the hardest time getting over this virus.

Thanks

If they have a high fever sometimes they don't want to drink, so, we put katherine in a lukewarm bath until her temp. dropped enough she wanted to drink. Then we just let her have her bottle/sippy in the bathtub. If they aren't fighting fluids though, don't know what to say except keep giving them... if it gets really bad to where you cannot hydrate them you may need to go to a dr and get an IV.

Praying for lukas' recovery. You might try pedia-lyte or gatorade(has more sugar though). My mom, a former nurse, used to have us sip fluid and either much saltine crackers, a few potato chips, or another salty snack with our liquids as salt both increases thrist and helps you to retain the fluid.

I agree with Beth. Eating something like a saltine cracker should make them thirsty and add salt to their system.

Thanks ladies for the advice and prayers. Never thought about the salty idea, good one. He is in the tub about 4 hours out of his day, he is achy so that helps. Also like you said Cheese reducing the fever.

Lukas is better this morning only his bottom one side of his lip appears dark. If things appeared to be getting worse we would have went to the dr for certain. Just the idea to him of an IV well that was a great incentive to drink, gotta love kids!
