my dd who turned 3 in dec is a big drinker. she drinks 6-8 ounces of milk at breakfast, lunch and dinner. and also drinks 3 8ounce sippy cups of water during the day. she has always been a big drinker, but is this too much. she still eats really well. we have tried cutting out some of the water, but then she goes and get's it on her own, and uses whatever she can find (play dishes) to drink out of. she even gets the bottles water and askes her older siblings to help her.

I, personally, wouldn't offer that much milk. But water..shoot, let her drink! :) I have noooo idea how much my kids drink. They fill their cups all day long. It's all we drink here. Water, water, water and more water :) It's a good thing ;)

I second what Tara said. We don't do the milk thing over here, either, but water's great. As long as she's not having accidents, her appetite is holding out, she's not getting headaches, and she's otherwise healthy (no signs of diabetes), I say go for it! We're all heavy drinkers over here, as well.

Yup, liquid is good! :) My daughter drinks mainly water and breastmilk (juice, soy milk, rice milk, etc. for treat drinks).

My Dr. recommends 24 oz. of milk each day through age 4 (low fat after 2 of course though)....so I'd say go for it! It's good to get the liquid and if she fills up on that, she won't need to snack on other unhealthy stuff! Good source of vitamins/proteins/and filling!

I think that maybe we question how much she drinks because my hubby ( and 1 of his brothers) has diabetes. so we are always on the look out for signs and symptoms.

My kiddos usually have milk with meals, and water in between. They also have the occassional glass of iced tea for a treat.

let's see, Patrick and Bri usually get their cups at the same time. We drink a lot of "splenda-ed" kool-aid and the crystal light stuff, they get their cups filled at the same time, and I'd say I fill them a good 12-16 times a day. They both eat good. Bri not as good as patrick, but we've already figured out the liquid has nothing to do with it.
Our ped told us, as my mom has been diabetic since she was 11, and I have HYPO-glycemia, as does our youngest son, that the littles will drink, drink, and drink. All they do is play all day, so they do need the hydration. He suggested to look out more for the strong urine, as you're likely to have the keytones regardless of hydration. We haven't really had problems with Bri, so we don't worry about it, but Patrick's glucose levels drop nearly daily. Usually after a nap or something. (ironically never first a.m., just after those naps) but anyway, back to the original question, nah, I don't think it's too much, but since you have the diabetes in the family, I would suggest watching for the strong urine more so than drinking a lot.

Rhy has a water bottle at home that she refills on her own. The preschool that she attends has a Culligan (sp?) cooler in each room and the kids can get water when they want it. She is allowed milk at each of her meals and water the rest of the day. I would say she drinks quite a bit but is a good eater so I am not concerned. I don't thinking being a big drinker is a problem as long as there are no other signs of diabetes.

Abby is a big drinker as well. Ever since she was born I bf her every hour on each breast for about for 4-5 months and then it went to two hours until she was about 7-8 months. But to this day she is always asking for something to drink. She LOVES milk. Loves it! I worry about this too just because I don't want her to get constipated or too full. sometimes I add water to her milk. Or she will drink some Apple juice and then some water. But it doesn't bother me as much. She is healthy and rarely gets sick.
