Last night we had some tears from our 7 yr old. He was worrying about today - his school's athletics carnival. He's not a good runner, it's just not his thing. He told me "I don't want you to see how slow I am" :( He was worried that dh and I would be embarrassed because "I'm always last. I just wish I could be fast, just for tomorrow."

Anyway, we had a long talk, then we got Daddy in and all three of us talked about how God made everyone different. I asked ds if he thought it mattered to God (that he's not a good runner), and his reply was "Of course not!". I also pointed out that God made him, and everything about him, including his running ability. That made him stop and think [whatthink] I started cuddling him and singing "I don't care how fast you run, I just care that you're my son" over and over, which made him giggle.

Anyway, today at the carnival, he went in not just his age race (100m), but also went in the optional 200m and 800m!!! He came last in the 200m, and 2nd last in the 800m, but no tears, just smiles that he made it [cheer]

He told me he didn't really want to go in the race, and I asked him why he did. He told me "To get extra points for my house." (School is divided into 3 "houses", or sports teams) I was so proud of him that even though he's not a good runner, and didn't really want to do it, he still did to try to help his house! I told him it showed how well his character is developing, that he was more interested in helping and being part of his team than what he wanted to do, and how proud of him I was!

When you're not good at something, it's so hard to put yourself out there, in front of everyone, and risking "losing", but he did it!

We're just so proud of our boy! [heartbeat]

I would be so proud of him, too! The lessons he's learning at such a young age are invaluable! You, your dh and your son get [cupgold]!

that's awesome! I was always the slowest too! Tell him to pursure the sweeper position in soccer! You can be slower for it, but powerful and go far! Worked for me! I just avoided track like the plague! LOL

Wow! I'm proud of him too!
It's so easy to see the kind-hearted boy he is in that story!
And I'm also proud of you and your husband for pointing to The Father in this situation. Way to Go!

Thanks ladies :D

We had such a fun day. I was just so proud of him! Putting himself out there, just to get one extra point for his house!

It was our youngest son's first ever athletics carnival (he's in Kindergarten), and he had a ball. They just do one age race, and then lots of games. He just loved it! He was so proud of himself, he came third in his race ( out of 5 kids, lol).

Donna, in situations like that with the boys (and with most,) we try to make sure we involve God - what He would think about the situation, where He factors into it, etc. It was actually after that part of the talk that our son settled down. We pointed out that God doesn't make mistakes, and reminded him of the gifts God has given him, which made him smile. Whether it's a school race, or life itself, as long as we keep our focus on Jesus, then it doesn't matter what position we come or how long it takes [cheer]

Awww! I understand because I also have always been a slow runner. I used to come second to last or last every time as well. One time I decided to practise for a whole week at lunchtimes before our school athletics day. And I ended up coming 16th. My parents were both there to see it and even my teachers were proud of me. It was a day I'll remember forever. Because my parents never came to anything like that and I really wanted them to be there so they came and I was so happy. :D

I'm glad he feels better now and that he enjoyed himself! :D
