View Full Version : For all of you pregnant green tea drinkers...
I saw that green tea was on the no-no list for pregnant women. I thought it was just because of the caffeine, so I had some a couple months ago because I absolutely love it. So when I saw that it was "forbidden," I looked it up to see why. According to one resource, the antioxidants in the tea work against folic acid, increasing the risk of birth defects in the baby. So yeah, I freaked out a little since pregnancy apparently makes me psycho. I asked my doc about it last week and she had never heard that before. When I asked, she gave me this weird look and asked me why it was bad. When I told her what I found, she said not to worry about it at all. The first four to five weeks of pregnancy are when folic acid are most crucial due to the neural development of the baby.
So I said all that to say that green tea is a-okay for us pregnant chicks.
Well it wouldn't be the caffeine because they say you can drink three cups of coffee a day. And coffee has more caffeine in it than tea. Actually does Tea even have caffeine in it? It has Tannin in it which can stop your body from absorbing iron properly. But they are not the same thing right?
Anyway, I never even took Folic acid any longer than for the first 12 weeks.
Don't the chinese drink a lot of green tea?
breezykc2 08-06-2006, 09:22 PM I have always been told no for green tea by my OB's....due to it causing possible defects and early miscarriage or contractions. I don't go near it and I use it religiously all other times other than pregnancy! I'd still avoid it!
Don't they say to avoid almost all herbal teas during pregnancy? There are so many like Red Raspberry Leaf Tea that I've read to avoid. There is a herbal tea that has licorice in it. So that would be a no-no as well.
My OB said that pretty much any herbal teas that Celestial Seasonings puts out is fine to drink while pregnant, including green tea. She said to avoid teas from Asian shops because they are typically medicinal and can cause complications.
I drank all sorts of tea with Riley, with the exception of green tea, and she turned out just fine.
breezykc2 08-07-2006, 12:39 PM NO joke....bottled water and bread! LOL, I feel like everything I try to make for dinner has a "no-no" ingredient in it and it's soooo frustrating to try and concoct a new version each time to make it on the all-acceptable list for pregnancy!
I guess next time I'm pregnant I will only be able to drink bottled water!
I don't know...I'm sure there's some sort of contaminant in there as well.
[rofl] so true! ITA It all seems a bit ridiculous at times.
I ate a ton of black licorice at around 24-25 weeks and I didn't go into preterm labour.
love2bmom 08-07-2006, 05:12 PM Make sure you knock on the bottle three times before drinking. Immediatly after drinking, wash your hands, but only with olive oil, but make sure the olive oil is not from California. Then be sure to dry your hands with an all natural toilette, but be sure there isn't any alcohol in it..

Sorry I had to be silly... because sometimes you can get soooo boggled down with the "do this, don't do this". How on earth did they have babies 50 years ago???
Ahh don't worry Beck, just enjoy in moderation and you will be fine.
Doctors IMO can't get their story straight about what is good for you in pregnancy and what isn't, it's very frustrating.
I mean, I got a magazine given to me on pregnancy and I was reading it over the weekend and the listeria list was completely different to others I had read and didn't elaborate on things I have been now told can have listeria in them. It also listed fish to avoid and there was no mention of tuna.
You just can't WIN! I say go with the Bible, all things in moderation.
Yeah, Renee the chinese drink a lot of green tea for sure. It's meant to be very cleansing for the body. Tannin and caffine aren't the same thing. Tannin is what turns the tea the brown colour.
I think all things in moderation is absolutely fine.
In some ways, you know - they do definately say drinking this or that can bring on baby and then on the other hand doctors have a dickens of a time even using the gels and drips to induce labour, so one begins to wonder at all the information sometimes (I know I do) - not that I am contradicting anyone by anymeans, I just get frustrated by all this "information overload"

Ah ok! That sounds right. I was pretty sure Tannin isn't the same as Caffeine. So does tea have caffeine in it? Because hubby drinks a lot of tea but he won't drink coffee because he gets bad migraines so he avoids anything with large amounts of caffeine in it and chocolate as well.
I keep telling him that with the amount of tea he drinks he is probably having just as much caffeine as someone who drinks three cups of coffee a day anyway. So he might as well give up! LOL He has a 3 cup teapot in the morning, at lunch time and at dinner time. So he has 9 cups of tea a day.
I keep telling you ladies, ICE is the way to go [rotfl] It wasn't exactly by choice per say, but my kid turned out great [rotfl]
 I would get hungry if I did that!
Yes tea does have caffine in it, I get decaffinated tea bags...
hey if he is fine drinking it and doesn't suffer from migranes while having the tea I wouldn't tell him...or is he still suffering from the migranes?
He only gets a migraine maybe once a fortnight or once a month. Last month it was 2x. I told him tea has caffeine in it and that he is having enough that it would probably be the equivalent to the amount of caffeine in 3 cups of coffee. But I guess he doesn't care...
