AmyB 08-03-2006, 11:46 AM Here is info about mercury and tuna. http://www.babycenter.com/expert/pregnancy/pregnancynutrition/2657.html 1Cor13 08-03-2006, 11:47 AM Thanks sweetie :D AmyB 08-03-2006, 11:53 AM You are welcome! :) Crissyanna 08-03-2006, 04:29 PM When I first got pregnant in January, the rule was to eat it like only once a month (just so you know, I LOVE tuna noodles, it's been torture). Then, not too long ago, I saw a news report online (no TV, we have an RSS feed on the computer to see news) that any tuna is bad. Now, I know my mother ate tuna while pregnant with me, and I was fine. Same with my MIL. It all depends on who you talk to. I had a friend who's OB said once a trimester, another friend's said six ounces every week to two weeks. I decided to ere on the side of caution, and just not eat it (so I don't buy it right now so it isn't in the house), since I have been eating salmon instead (higher in omega 3s and iron anyway and lower in mercury). One friend ate it whenever she wanted it while she was pregnant and her four month old is fine. I think everything in moderation. I did cut out cold cuts (like salami and liverwurst, I will still eat ham or turkey occasionally). The kiddo is fine thus far. Only another six or so weeks to go (PTL, I don't think I can last much longer) Do what you think is best. I don't think some tuna is going to hurt anything. I am thinking of making tuna noodles this week to celebrate surviving my MIL's back surgery and her recovery (I got to go over to her house for three of the past four weeks to nurse her. Just got back today, thank God, I don't have to go back there for that) Crystal 08-03-2006, 08:27 PM They say to avoid it but I have eaten Tuna during both my pregnancies. I have one healthy daughter so far... and I'm sure this one will be too. As long as you are only eating it occasionally it should be fine. 2 sandwiches a month is not much  and most fish actually has mercury in it  I posted an article off the net in another thread in the pregnancy forum. Look in the thread titled "just in case". Fish is good for you and they recommend you eat at least 2 portions/servings a week during pregnancy. It has Omega 3 in it which is very good for baby  NZMummy 08-03-2006, 10:37 PM I have found this issue is so confusing because the experts seem to keep changing their minds about what is OK. I noticed that the latest health department brochure that they give pregnant women here in New Zealand said that the main fish to be concerned about are shark, gemfish, swordfish, marlin, orange roughy, ling and fish caught in geothermal waters (such as trout). But that other fish (including tinned fish) need not be limited. I think that they say this because levels are meant to be lower in the tinned tuna compared to the fresh fish. Still, this seems to be different to what they were advising during my last pregnancy (which was to limit tinned tuna to one or two small servings a week). Last pregnancy I changed to eating tinned salmon instead of tuna - but this time I have had so much trouble with my appetite (morning sickness etc.) that I have had a small tin of tuna once a week for a number of weeks because it was something easy my stomach could handle. 08-04-2006, 01:48 AM Crystal I totally agree with you about just keeping it in moderation! I find it also personally a bit insane how Doctors say "don't eat deep sea fish" and then after the baby is born they want you to bring the baby into the clinic to give the baby an immunisation that are often stabilised with Mercury, the information contradicts itself IMO. I am not saying the information is wrong, I just feel they are being contradictive. Last pregnancy I was NEVER told not to eat Tuna and I ate tuna mornay now and then believing it to be healthy, my twins are fine. This pregnancy, I had had tuna mornay a few times before My doctor gave me the sheet of do's and don'ts which said don't eat Tuna, but neglected to mention that things like swordfish were also on the apparent no-no list, so I ate swordfish. Well the latest news on it over here is that NO ONE should eat deep sea fish, incl Tuna more than once a week. I still wouldn't go completely cold turkey on having a Tuna dish every now and then, but other people may be uncomfortable with this. My Mum would make tuna mornay A LOT and so would MIL when we were inutero and as children simply because they were not wealthy and it was a cheap dish and we are all okay. So like Crystal says, I believe ALL THINGS in moderation. Read information, weigh it up and then come to your own conclusions, there are certain things I would NEVER dream of eating during my pregnancy that some women continue to eat... 1Cor13 08-04-2006, 07:38 AM I guess I dont have to be too worried. I am not a big fish person, I just never got a taste for all the different kinds of seafood there is. I do like deep fried fish and chips. We have a really good fish and chips shop here, and I could eat there every day.. I tend not too though. Tuna I have to be in the mood for, which is not that often.. If I think about it too much, I can't eat it..just like with eggs.. 08-06-2006, 09:26 PM See the only fish I read to stay away from was Tuna. Then recently I find that most fish has mercury in it and we should also stay away from things like Shark. Well, we have Fish & Chips once a week and the fish is most probably shark or snapper. I think they use different fish ... depending on what the fisherman have been able to catch at that time of year. So I have no idea what the fish is in my fish & chips  Beck 08-07-2006, 09:10 AM My doctor told me to limit tuna to once a week and only eat white albacore. Tuna's one of the only kind of seafood I'll eat, and I love it. I ate it with Riley and she's just fine. cjropher 08-07-2006, 12:35 PM I never heard anything like that before. I'm not a huge tuna fan, but when a craving hits during pregnancy... I did read somehwere that each person can handle a different amount of mercury. So if you ingest some in your food while pregnant (and before apparently) and then your baby has a low toelrance to mecury, the extra through vaccines could case complications. Like I said in the green tea post, it's all really confusing. breezykc2 08-07-2006, 02:20 PM Yeah, I was told no tuna of any type at all during pregnancy due to mercury...they used to think canned light in water was okay, but now they've changed their minds in the past few months. I avoid it all and I love it, it's a hard one to give up for me! In five years they'll be telling us that half the things they think are okay now are bad then. My Mom constantly remarks that it's a miracle I'm alive after she had done all on the current No-no list. 08-07-2006, 09:43 PM mmm I personally think doctors are bored and have to make up new ways to freak pregnant women out everyday LOL I am kidding, but honestly that is how I feel sometimes!!! 08-07-2006, 10:35 PM Same here Aussie Mum! |
