Okay, so I'm up here helping with my 1 week old niece. I have a question as I've never seen this before.

First, I was concerned because she has major light sensitivity. Yeah, I know newborns don't open their eyes all that often, but this is extreme. Then when she did open her eyes, I noticed two rather large blood streaks - one on each eye - on the whites both on the inside corner of the eye but actually on the eye itself. They are identical, they run from the top to the bottom and are almost the entire width of the white part. Has anyone ever seen this? She goes to the doctor on Friday morning, so I guess my sister is just waiting until then. Was just curious...

Sometimes babies have burst blood vessels in their eyes from the trauma of delivery...my daughter did...not sure if it could be that. But definitely ask the doctor on Friday.

I've never seen something like that. I'd definitely make sure your sister asks the dr about it!

I've never seen that either but have also heard that some babies have some vessel damage from delivery. I also know of a few who had an adverse reaction to the eye drops/ointment used as well. I had a reaction myself as an infant. I remember my mom saying that there was some swelling and redness as well as light sensitivity. I'd be sure to ask the doc about it, maybe it warrants a phonecall?

After another evening of searching, I think I found out what the eye problem is...it is subconjunctival hemorrhages. They say it is common in newborns (? okay...) and that it usually disappears within a week or two. Before babies are really opening their eyes. My sister will find some comfort in that tomorrow (I hope).

Still have other concerns about the eyes and my mom has promised to ask if she doesn't (I get to babysit my nephew.)

Overall, our visit is going okay. The kids have been super great. I think we will stay through the weekend then head home, we are all getting tired...especially hubby because he is still at home while we are all gone :(
