Was wondering what foods you should avoid giving in the first year. I've heard not to give babies milk and nuts is there anything else?

You aren't supposed to give them honey the first year either...

I avoided dairy products completely for the first year with my son (due to the fact that there is a family history of dairy allergy). I was a bit less strict with dd - eg. she ended up having rusks with dairy product in them. Also nuts and honey as mentioned above.

If there is any family history of allergy (or signs of allergy in your child like skin problems) you may also want to avoid seafood, eggs, citrus, wheat or tomato. Otherwise just introduce these foods gradually.

until 1...no cow milk or other milk substitutes other than breastmilk or formula

until 2...no eggs or nuts/peanut butter

until 4...no straight honey or shellfish (some people try earlier, but this is the rec'd age).....just an FYI...things with honey baked in them from the store, like honey nut cheerios are processed so the honey is now safe and okay at 1 year! It's just honey straight!

I knew the 'until 1' part, but not the others. DS had eggs, nuts, PB before 2 and honey and shellfish already. Oh well...no issue with us!

Also, it is generally recommended to stick with white bread as much as possible for at least the first year as other breads are a bit rough on their imature digestive system - although I did give dd light wheatmeal bread before she turned 1. The heavy grain breads are not suitable until after 3 years.

I am with Kate, I only waited on honey and have yet to give peanuts. I started ds on 12 grain bread at about 8 mos and he didn't have a problem...Guess I am lucky he doesn't have a sensitive stomach:)

I found this.

Strawberries

Please note that the current recommendation for introducing strawberries is after a baby has reached 12 months of age. Many infants are introduced to strawberries earlier than 12 months old; most often when they have been eating Stage 2 commercial baby foods.

Most pediatric resources will tell you to hold off on introducing strawberries until a baby is between 10-12 months of age. The early end of this age range takes into account the non-food sensitive and non-allergic baby. We urge you consult your personal pediatrician when it comes to introducing potential allergenic foods. As mentioned, there are some infants who are clearly not food-sensitive and your pediatrician might give the go-ahead for foods at an age earlier than the commonly recommended age.

The info is from this site. I guess it is because lots of people are allergic to them. The site is helpful though.

I believe that the following are supposed to wait until after a year old:

1) Honey
2) Strawberries
3) Citrus fruits
4) Seafood

And I think that peanuts are supposed to wait until like 2 or 3 years old. I still haven't given DD anything with peanuts in it.

And the current recommendation from the AAP is to exclusively breastfeed and wait on solids until 6 months old.

I'm a little older than most of you. When I had my 26 year old my mom was always trying to convince me to put Karo in his water bottles. My dr. said no way. But many mom's my mothers age did. I never hear anyone mention that today. Matter of fact she thought I was nuts to nurse and most of my friends and family also agreed with her. Things have really changed for the better.
