Anyone else nursing for over an hour at a time?...and about every 3 hours?
Should a newborn be eating like this? He IS having plenty of wet & poopy diapers every day.

sounds like all of mine ;)

is he falling asleep during nursing? not actually ACTIVELY nursing that entire hour?

try to stir him a bit. Take him off the breast. Arouse him a bit, open the eyes, then let him finish.

if he's actively nursing that whole time..well..then just hang in there..he's tryin' to grow strong momma :)

My son was like that, but a lot of his nursing time he was dozing off, so it took a long time. Sometimes if you giggle their hands and talk to them it will keep them awake and focused. My son nursed about everything 3 hours for about 10-12 weeks. Thankfully about the time I went back to work at 12 weeks, he had slowed down at night. They do say if they are not getting enough to eat during the day that they will eat a lot at night.

Also, I had several people tell me to give him a bottle of formula at night so it would hold him better, well they were wrong, it didn't help at all. I just kept nursing him at night.

Perfectly normal, hon. Just enjoy that precious baby boy and make sure that other people do your housework and make your meals!!!

Sounds like mine too! That was "fun" with the twins... it seemed like all I did was NURSE! It does pass though, nursing gets easier and you just find this system, both of you, that works and doesn't take as much time. For me, with my first two, I think it was my milk coming in, then with the twins, they would fall asleep during nursing and it would take forEVER for them to get "full". I was pretty run ragged there with the twins... but like I said... it *does* pass. :)

I would have been thankful to have that much time in between feedings with my newborns ;)
All three of mine were lazy/sleepy nursers :) It does seem like all you do in the first three months is have a child attached to you and if you don't, that means you are changing a diaper....hang in there.

Sounds pretty normal to me. It seems like alot of nursing, but they need it when they're really young like that.

In my own experience with my 2 boys, my oldest liked to nurse for a very long time, like up to an hour at a time, and then again 2 hours from the start of the last session 24 hours a day in the first couple of months. So if he started nursing at 12 pm, he'd nurse again at 2 pm....very little break in between in the beginning. It got particularly frequent when he was going through a growth spurt too.

Even my youngest son, who didn't spend as much time at the breast during a session still was an every 2 hour (start to start) nurser, even through the night for the first several months, and then he would go a bit of a longer stretch at night. He actually nursed every 2 hours during the day until he was almost a year old...even though he'd had solid foods too since 6 mos.

Anyway, not to scare you, but to show you that there's a wide range of what's normal for nursing for a baby. Especially with nursing, where the breastmilk is much easier on baby's tummy than formula, so it digests more quickly, where with formula, its alot harsher, and takes more time to digest.

I just wanted to add, that in the coming months, it will help if you look into babywearing. A baby sling can be a Godsend when lo wants to nurse all of the time and you need to get up and get moving. Baby can actually nurse in the sling while you wear him/her. It really helps you get up and get moving and still see to baby's needs.

I actually made my ringslings. If you like to sew, they're fairly easy to make and there are lots of patterns available online. Mine looks like the ringslings on this site: www.mayawrap.com
