View Full Version : When did you introduce a normal cup?
I don't mean a sippy cup or a non spill cup. I mean a normal childs cup with no lid or handles!
And how long did it take for your child to master a cup? Without spilling half of it down their front HAHA

Well...my 8 year old son still spills drinks down the front of his shirt  when he uses a regular cup with no lid. My dd just turned 5 and sometimes she drinks out of a cup with no lid. They both have "big" Spongebob cups with lids and straws and use them most of the time. It saves me from having to stress and worry about them spilling their drinks. :D Stephanie :D

I was going to ask do they ever learn how to drink without spilling it down the front of their shirt?
I started my kids drinking out of a cup with no lid, at the dinner table, around three. I still used sippy cups for when we were on the go for about another year.

I started a regular cup around two years old, making sure to put only tiny bits in it- by three, my son had it down pretty good and uses a regular cup at most times, except when I ocassionally let him drink in the living room (when we have movie night where we snack and have a drink), when I use a cup with a lid. I found getting rid of the sippy cup helpful in potty training as I noticed I had a tendency to fill it up constantly and on demand. We use regular cup at all meal times and snack times (which are most always at the table) and I see no need for drinking all day in between... I save "special drinks" like Capri Sun water for when we go on picnics...

My oldest started using a regular cup around the age three. She would also use the sippy, especially in the car. My youngest who is 2 will occasionally use a regular cup, but only if I am there to help if needed. She wants to be just like her big sis :) . When I taught preschool, my 2 year olds were all using regular cups, however I ended up cleaning up a lot of spills! [whatwacko] One rule of thumb I always use is that I only pour as much as I'm willing to clean up. :D

I probably started using regular cup (no lid) around 2 1/2 or 3 years old for my boys. It was also done at meal times at the table. I would only put a little in so if it spilled less to clean up. ha ha One thing we also made sure of is that the cup stayed above their plate and not between the plate and table edge. That way it wasn't as likeley to be bumped. We still have to remind our boys to push their cups back (away from the table edge)

Mine too!! I can't remember at what age I introduced him to the regular cup, but it was only at meal times and just a small amount in the cup. But most of the time he drank from those cups w/the straws in them and still prefers them to a regular cup.
Yep she only gets a cup when she is sitting in her highchair. The rest of the time I give her a sippy cup. I don't want drink spilled on the carpet! If we go out then she will have a sippy as well. I don't think my parents will appreciate drink on their new carpet. Clear drinks are fine but not her juice! If she is sitting in the highchair at their house with paper or a plastic mat under it then I think they will be ok.
This morning she tilted the cup up too much and poured a whole lot of cold Milo down her front and back  :( and she cried. I couldn't help but laugh though
I have noticed she is fine once she has spilled a third or so down her front. So from now on I'm only going to half fill the cup
She just needs to be careful and not be so "confident" because she picks up the cup in one hand only and tips it back  sometimes. Most of the time though she just sits there and tips it back just a little and sips it. :D
I think by 3 she should be fine. I hope! I want to eliminate sippys and cups with lids and straws asap.

I guess I am right on track..my son is almost three and we just started the regular cup!! He can do pretty good. Our dining room is carpeted..so we put VERY LITTLE in his cup at a time. He still uses a sippy cup most of the time though. It is good to hear what everyone else does!
shoot...sometimes I need a sippy cup!!

My DS has been using a regular cup at the table since about 2. He uses sippy cups with straws and we really encourage no drinks except at the table. It is difficult to PT with constant drinks. My DS could drink all day.
Funny about spilling down the front of the shirt... I'm 32 and still spill down the front of me [rotfl]
DD mastered the sippy by 9mo and moved right into a regular cup..We chose not to use anything but that and we didn't have very many spills that I can recall..MIL still uses cups with lids though  ofcourse MIL still spoon feeds the child

with Gabe, we started him on a sippy cup at six months, he had it down within two or three months, and done wonderful. He could drink out of a regular cup I know by 16 months, but not sure when he started, and actually got it down. We still used sippy cups most of the time, though, until he was about four.
with Bri, he'll be ten months on saturday, and we've bought every sippy cup on the market only to have him refuse to drink from it. Lord, I wish that child could say more than six words and tell us what's wrong with each of them, LOL.
He has the protein allergy, and has to drink a special formula, can't eat a HUGE list of foods, and all, and since he can't eat a lot of stuff, i give in and give him a bottle.
If i gave him a sippy cup when he gets up this morning, he would not drink anything until bedtime.
I should probably work with him more, but with the food issue, I don't push it.
DH says we should just pack up all the bottles, and when he's thirsty he'll drink, but I just can't do it,
do any of you have any suggestions for getting him on a sippy cup, while we're talking cups here?

I don't know if your little one is BF or fed formula, but I thought giving a bottle was appropriate until a year?? One thing that worked to get my ds to drink from a sippy was that I never put anything but milk in the bottle- if he wanted juice (half water) he had it in a cup... he also liked to have those drinkable yogurts (kind of expensive, but we had more money then) in his sippy cup.

typically, at least around here, they encourage sippy cups at around eight months or so and have them completley on the cup by one year.
we've found a cup combination that works with Bri, it's the Nuby tops on the Avent cups, looks rediculous, cause you can tell they don't go together, but he likes it that way, so we're not arguing.
learned real quick with our oldest to pick my battles, LOL.
he doesn't like the avent tops and won't hold the Nuby cups. but loves them crossed up, so since it works, we're ok with it.
but it's only certain Nuby tops he likes guess he's just a picky person.
