View Full Version : Nursing Tank Tops
cjropher 11-20-2007, 04:08 PM Do any of you have suggestions on some sort of nursing tank top that DOES NOT have a built in bra? Ideally, I want to wear a nursing bra, then a tank that allows easy access to the bra, and then a shirt. I'm tired of showing my belly when I nurse (and it gets cold in our house! LOL). I tried one in Thyme Maternity, but it had a built in shelf bra that gives no where near enough support, and it would be awkward to wear a bra under it... could wear the bra over it, but that's just weird... so I looked online today and most all have a built in shelf bra, but that's useless to me. I mostly wear normal shirts that I pull up from the bottom, exposing my belly, which I can hide with a blanket, but I find I'm pretty discreet otherwise. So if I had an undershirt of sorts that went over my bra, but wasn't a built in bra (think normal tank top only with the ability to open it up at the straps and then nothing underneath (I suppose like a bra but not!)). This is the only one that I found that might be a possibility, http://www.comfykangaroo.com - this tank comes with a separate bra, so might be a possibility, anyone have anything to say about these ones? Or any other things that work? Thanks!
With nursing twins, I didn't really nurse tandem in public, because of obvious reasons, there was just NO way for me to do it discreetly. But, my nursing tank heaven was met when I bought a shelf bra tank from Target (I know it has a "bra" in it) but I absolutely LOVED wearing it, and it was SOOO easy to nurse in. I'm not a "big" gal, I got up to a *c* while nursing TWINS, so I'm normally an A and the shelf bra was plenty of support for me. I liked that I could wear it under a shirt and just pull down the side I was nursing from. I loved that and will definitely do that again with this baby when he/she is born. I liked that it gave me a "stylish" layered look with a lot of tops too. It cost me about five bucks from target and it lasted over a year (broke or disintegrated from me washing so ofte, I only bought two), and I really loved that. I bought some fancier nursing tanks from motherhood and despised them... So... *for me* that was what worked best... but everybody is definitely different. :)
kanaclark 11-20-2007, 04:47 PM what about a men's tank undershirt? (some people call them 'wifebeaters")
if you get it to "fit" you as if you're a guy, the arm holes are low enough to just pull over from armpit to center chest. I used them a while.
When I was bfing, I fell in love with "wrap" style tanks (Not literally a wrap, but the neckline overlapped like a wrap style with an empire waistline....I hope that makes sense), or tanks with low v necks made from a really stretchy material. Both styles were really easy to just pull to the side for access to my bra and feeding easily. I know how you feel about not wanting to bare your belly all the time...brrr! HTH
plaid 11-21-2007, 04:35 PM I was looking for something too! This is what I am going to try.

I am hoping it gets here soon so I can see if it stays up on a not huge pregnant belly. I just wanted something to cover my tummy, but be easy to nurse with.
If it gets here soon I will let you know how it works.
Blessings!

KansasMom 11-22-2007, 09:00 AM Have you tried the Motherhood website...here is a tank type shirt with pull to the side openings...it doesn't say it has a shelf bra but it may be more then what you are looking for...I have been rather impressed with motherhood's nursing clothing (in looking...I don't have any yet...just considering).

Hope that helps a little...they have all kinds of things if you look around on the website..not just this tank.

cjropher 11-23-2007, 01:10 AM Thanks for the suggestions. Dh was less than thrilled with the comfy kangaroo ones... only b/c of price LOL. He asked how long I would nurse for! LOL... Yes, he fully supports me, but $60 is $60 and I've managed for 2 previous children, plus 3 months with this one, so why now! Anyway, plaid recommended that site that sells the bella band, and there is a store in my city that carries them. Plus someone else had suggested them. So maybe tomorrow I will go see what they are like. Hmmm, I might have to let you know how they work Plaid! LOL
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I got a bunch of tanks at Costco, cut the straps, and put a snap on. Voila!
I have also made my own 'undershirts' by cutting vertical holes in old shirts. Once I found out where and how long worked well for me, I bought some cheap shirts in the colors I needed.
cjropher 11-23-2007, 05:58 PM LOL, I went today and bought a Bella Band plaid!!! It's okay, probably better during pregnancy than after, but it works alright. Still getting used to it. But it's comfy and I'm pleased with it.
Rach, I considered making my own, but that involves sewing and the last sewing project I undertook was 4 years ago and I'm still working on it! So, figured by the time they were done, I wouldn't need them anymore! LOL. Even just snaps could take me months! But thanks!
4HisGlory 11-23-2007, 11:11 PM ok looking at my tanks I think my idea is totally possible. If you were to cut the bra out to just a bit lower then the inner clasp that is attached to the bra it could work. My tank has the inner bra (which I don't have a problem with and I am a DD...I think) and the back piece to the clasp is on it (the plastic hook) and then the front of the tank has the piece the hook fits on to. It seems like the clasp would still work if you just cut (at least the elastic) out. I got my tank at target for $17.http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=sc_qi_detaillink/601-8886254-8769765?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000KLVH56
this is the link to the nursing bra...also FYI the tank is not completely sewn in...only at the very very top so it would be very easy to cut.
Also in regards to you being cold, I use wool nipple pads. I don't use them for leakage but for warmth. They were itchy like the 1st day a bit but not any longer and I usually hate wool....just another thought. I know you can also find nipple pads in cotton.
plaid 11-24-2007, 11:58 AM Ha ha you did beat me! I am glad to hear it works! Ahh, one of the joys of living in the big smoke. It is a 3 1/2 hour drive in any direction for me to get one, so I ordered it online. I checked last night and they have not even charged me for it yet. So one day...
Excited that it works!
