My daughter has been on 2 breast feeds a day for the last week or so having cut out the morning feed (she didn't even seem to notice its absence). However she has just started to feed really differently. When I start the feed, she clamps down really hard and holds on for dear life. And she doesn't want to let go - even when she has finished. I am having terrible trouble getting her off when she is so determined to hang on. It is actually quite uncomfortable. Anyone else have this issue?

My yongest dd (6mths this coming week) has cut down on the frequency but increased the intensity of her nursing lately. She voluntarily began refusing her pacifier several weeks back so seems to nurse for food and comfort now. She latches on more heavily, falls asleep at the breast a lot and is difficult to remove. Sometimes I try to remove her and she'll wake and grab back greedily, but not to actively drink, more to just hold it in her mouth (sorry, maybe tmi). I never experienced this with my older three who nursed purely for nourishment and self-weaned themselves once they were heavy into solids. One tried and true trick to break the latch is to insert a finger gently into the corner of the mouth to break the suction and then remove the child. You could try this if you haven't already. In my case, she'll often wake and hold right back on. I try to sneak her off and then hold her perfectly still for 5 mins or so until she's sleeping more deeply- then move her. Hope some of this is useful for you!

Thanks for your reply and advise Beth.
This sounds exactly like what my dd is doing. She also falls asleep and wakes up to clamp back on as soon as I try to move her. I suppose that feeding is a lot more of a comfort thing for her than it was for my son (he was very happy sucking his thumb for comfort). Maybe she is scared that I will be cutting out all the feeds really soon.
