but does anyone know how many Play-Doh colors there are? I mean the ones in single tubs (not packs with cutters etc because I know they make lots of colors for those).

I have only found 8. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Light Blue, Purple & White.
Do they make any more colors in the standard size containers?

I don't want to mix them together because then we'll run out of the primary colors KWIM and that would be an expensive habit....

I also know they make black. Our pastor used it for a message on parenting. Everyone that came into church got a container of play-doh. ON the BRAND NEW CARPET... :?

They also have fluro green, fluro pink.

I get angry when my kids have play dough because it doesn't matter how many times I tell them not to mush the colours together they still do LOL.
Then they end up stuffing it in weird places and or throwing it around the house so I have banned playdough for another 5 months or so for the sake of my sanity. 8)

DH and I told them the playdough was not allowed down from the table, so they devised a scheme to sneak bits and pieces of it off the

ok, seriously moms...lets just LET them mix the colors! When they are all mixed together they will still play with it. I gave UP on trying to stop them from mixing...
they are KIDS! Just go with it, it's playdoh!! You can get four regular size containers at the dollar store!

I made some playdoh a little while ago. It keeps for ages in the fridge. That way you can chose any colour - using food colouring. But I must admit I have only done one colour so far (bright green was the only food colouring I had on hand) and he has only played with it under close supervision so far (so he hasn't been able to spread it around the room too much). I find that he loses interest very quickly if I am not playing with him (he is 27 months and not really interested in playing by himself much).

I remember having a playdoh set when I was younger where you could make hair grow on a plastic person and then trim it off. My son would love one of those if I can find one that isn't too expensive - unfortunately I think that we got rid of my old set. Or do I not want to encourage the hair-cutting facination :? ? He already likes to pretend that he is cutting my hair with his 'Bob the Builder' pliers.

This is one area that I have learned to just let them mix and have fun. I just put the giant multi colored ball in a ziploc baggie. They have fun, and love getting new jars when they have been good. My boys love, love to play with playdough.

I want so much to learn how to make home made playdough. It sounds like fun. And a money saver I'm sure. I think it would make a fun project to do with the kids. Is it messy to make NZ mommy?

But as far as how many colors are out there, it seems like a ton. There are always every color imaginable in those tiny containers they sell in packs of 15 I think.

Here's a Play Dough recipe for those interested. It only takes a couple of minutes to make and keeps forever in the fridge. I only ever make one color too, and then you don't have to worry about colors mixing.

Play Dough

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 Tbsp. oil
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup water
Food coloring

Mix all together in saucepan. Stir and heat until it forms a soft dough-like ball. Cool & let your kids go to it! Good Luck!

That is the same recipe that we used and we made all kinds of colors. That has been about 5 months ago too and they are all still in good shape. The girls have a lot of fun with them and if they eat it then i don't worry too much.

Yes, this looks like the same recipe (or very close) to what I used.

My oldest ds LOVED playdough! He would sit for an hour playing w/it. That gave me loads of time to do stuff like clean the bathrooms or wash the dishes. I would just put an old sheet down on the floor and he would play w/it there. I don't think I'll be as lucky w/my youngest ds. He wont stay still long enough to keep it on the sheet. I also just let ds mix what ever he wanted together. He was having fun and that was what was important! I never tried to make it, but I think I will give it a try this time around. Sounds really easy and a LOT less expensive.

Yeah I remember doing that as a kid LOL I am probably going to just make my own as you can make a huge amount and it's far cheaper to do it that way  The containers in NZ are $3.99 each
I just have to buy the ingredients ... I already have red and yellow food coloring from making Abbys bday cake.
I stuck green playdough in my ears when I was a kid. Mum had to take me to the doctors and they got it out LOL She thought it was green peas but it was playdough
So I don't let Abby play with it by herself... the last thing she/I needs is a trip to the 24 hour doctors!

 yeah I cut a few of my dolls hair when I was a kid.
I already have a rule ready that if Abby cuts her dolls hair then it goes up in the cupboard (high LOL) and she doesn't get to play with it again.
The other day she found a crayon (that I didn't LOL) and drew on the wall. It came off with Jif (with tons of elbow grease) and I told her that if she draws on the wall again I'll take her toys off her and sell them to buy paint so I can repaint the walls LOL

Yeah I saw a pack of 50 1oz containers for $29.99. Not sure how big the containers are... they look small.
The only reason I want lots of colors is because on the Play-Doh website they have all these different things you can make but you need lots of colors even brown.
That's why I may just make it myself... since the containers are $3.99 here.

I use to eat it LOL

You can bake it too which is fun! As long as they don't stick it in their nose or ears LOL

We've gone to putty here. It doesn't get stuck in the carpet like playdoh and it's just as fun.
