View Full Version : Daniel's not eating right

He seems to truly be missing mommy. Not evidenced by crying, but instead by a lack of what he eats from a bottle while I'm at school. Monday, I breastfed him at 6AM, he ate from a bottle around 11AM but only ate 1 oz. He refused to eat anymore until I came home at 3:30, at which point he went to town breastfeeding. Tuesday, he increased to 1 1/2 oz from the bottle... but still refused to eat after that, until I got home. Today, same deal... : /

By how much I'm pumping, I figure he gets anywhere from 6 to 9 oz from me each feeding.

This pattern doesn't seem right to me... What do you gals think?

Does he eat all night?

If he is breastfeeding all evening and night with you it's something that some moms practice as "reverse cycling" - so baby gets the majority of milk during the night, so they don't have to pump as much during the day because of work or whatever keeps them from baby.

Hmm...maybe it's a "Daniel" thing. Our Daniel did exactly the same thing when I was working which is why we looked at our finances to see if I could stay home. Anyway...I agree w/ Cheese. Try reverse cycling and see if that works or even have your "feeder" during the day wrap him in a shirt (or blanket you have slept with several days) so he gets "Mommy's scent". Sometimes that will help them eat too. The combo of milk and smell. That's what we did for a while until I stayed home full time. Prayers that he gets all he needs and you feel peace with it all. Blessings! ~Kerri

ok going off topic here but you get6-9 oz per pump Alison!!! wow my milk supply must be way low! I am lucky to get 2 oz!

Also have you tried different bottles/nipples maybe he just doesn't like the kind you have. try to get a nipple that is slow flow and the nipple looks as close t yours as possible.(i.e. nipple length and base width.)

hey, 2 oz. per pump can be totally normal depending on how often you pump. I was only able to get 2 oz. (with MUCH difficulty) at first because i had the wrong size breastshield on my pump... once i got the correct size i got more like 5 oz... once i ate oatmeal everyday then i got like 5-10 LOL... so I would check to see if you have the right size shield... if you do have the right size then you may just be one of the women who gets 2 oz....

but I wouldn't worry about your supply being low just because you are only pumping 2 oz... especially if you are pumping often.

Sorry for the thread hijack

When I pumped, I started when ds dropped his 3am feeding and slept through the night. So, I woke up FULL. I pumped and got like 8-12 oz (if i remember correctly) and then could still feed him when he woke up. Of course he could get more out of me than the breast pump could!

Alison, praying things improved. Know you are in my prayers. I have never heard of "reverse cycling" hmm interesting.

I hope this week goes better for you mom, I know this has to be hard on you sometimes emotionally. Transition is hard at any age, he'll come around soon.
