View Full Version : Iron Deficincy

Does anyone else have an iron deficincy? Or dealt with it? I had the GD test yesterday (don't have it) and they screened for iron too. I was low. Not low enough to need pills, but low enough that I was told to eat a high iron diet. They gave me a sheet of paper of things I should eat, and most of them, I already do. Does anyone have a way they slip more iron into their diet, preferably without pills (I don't want or need the main side effect of those.....)
I am going to try and cut out a lot of the antacids I've been taking. I was reading and it said that those can block iron absorption. So, it is back to suffering with the heartburn, I guess (not like I took that many of them anyway, and I would always wait to see if it would go away on it's own before taking those nasty things)
Thanks.

I had low iron with all of my pregnancies. I had major problems with my pre-nates and I don't eat meat so I'm sure that all contributed to it. I made it through fine though! YOu will too! :)
Crissy I would keep taking the antacids. You can take them while taking iron pills but just not at the same time... as long as you leave say 3-4 hours between taking an iron tablet and taking the antacid.
I have anaemia. I have to take iron tablets (they have Vitamin C in them too which helps to absorb iron... basically you need to keep your Vit C intake up if you want the iron to get absorbed as well as it can) because my Ferriten level was only 13.
And I take antacids as well. I use Mylanta
If you are not Anaemic and you just need a little extra iron then I think you could take something like a multivitamin and that should top you up just enough

Raisins are great for "raising" your iron. Catch the pun? :D But it is true!
LOL I think black Licorice is too. I think it has Molasses in it or something... which is very high in iron
Dried apricots also have iron in them  So if you like those just buy heaps of them! LOL

I love dried fruit, however, most of it is preserved in stuff that will kill me (sulfite, or some form of it, or sulfur dioxide which sulfite is converted to in the body, and if I have too much of that, I get sick). So, while the dried fruit may fix one problem, it creates a whole new one. Frankly, going into anaphylaxis is no fun when I'm not pregnant, would love to avoid while I am.
I have iron in my prenatals. Those pills give me heartburn. A sip of water gave me heartburn the other day. The stuff they make you drink for the GD test gave me heartburn. Bad, and I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything for that hour.
I am half tempted to go and get some OTC iron pills, but, they cause constipation, and well, I've dealt with that too much the past seven months. I would like to avoid that route if at all possible.
Does anyone have a good molasses cookie recipe? Molasses is full of iron, I know that, I just don't know what to do with the stuff. I've never cooked with it before.
Thanks.

I agree with Renee. Continue taking the antacids. I have anemia and had to take iron supplements. I also had high blood pressure, so I also had to take calcium... but do not take together, like Renee said. As far as foods high in iron.. basically meat. I am not sure what foods other than meat are high in iron. Check online or check with your hospitals nutrionist.
Renee I have actually heard not to eat liquorice during pregnancy because in high doses it can bring on pre-term (it was on some morning news programme) - I COULD be an old wives tale so to speak.
I take a big multivitamin with a very gentle iron in it, some iron is soooo hard on the system (such as fefol).
Pumpkin (complete w/skin) is high in iron, avocado is high in folate etc. There are green veggies with iron in them. I had low iron after I had the twins so I was told also to eat a high iron diet, it totally went away but during this preg I have been really careful with my iron stores and do take that easy to take multivitamin for pregnancy complete with iron, I generally can't take iron tablets as a rule they make me feel sick, gassy, bloated and just generally GROSS... so my Obstetrician told me to take a pregnancy multivitamin called FABFOL, I can't even feel any side effects if iron.
I am also paranoid about not getting enough vitamins even though DH and I have a VERY healthy diet so I just take them anyways for peace of mind.
Hope you aren't feeling too tired or anything, and you find something that can help you!!

I had low iron in my last pregnancy - like you it was not low enough to require the prescribed pills. I just made sure I ate more red meat and took some 'Iron and Vitamin C' pills from the supermarket (midwife recommended them). These pills are really mild and don't cause me any side effects (the bottle reads: provides 20mg elemental iron per tablet, and I take 2 per day). This seemed to be enough to solve the problem for me. I continued to take them until I stopped breast-feeding. I have started taking them again with this pregnancy because I was feeling tired and have not been able to handle too much red meat this time. I am due for a blood test in a couple of weeks - so I guess I will find out then if it is working for me this time.
I had also read that liquorice during pregnancy can bring on pre-term labour in high doses. I had a real craving earlier in pregnancy for some Liquorice Allsorts so I had a tiny bit - but I found that they made me feel ill (usually I love them, so maybe my body was trying to tell me something).

Yes, I only eat raw organic raisins! No sulfur dioxide! And Molasses is great too! Some say a tablespoon of black strap molasses a day will get the job done in no time!

I too delt with that and I put raisins in everything I cooked! Bread, muffins, salads, cereal, rice pudding, etc! Actually they cook out pretty good and get soft if you don't like raisins much (like I don't) and so they aren't nearly as potent tatesting!

I don't know why I didn't think of organic raisins. I found organic fig newtons (wonderful wonderful wonderful, Newman's Own brand, but three times the price of the other stuff, with less in the package :( ). I cook a lot of meat in this house, Hubby is a meat and potato guy. However, he just got put on a low cholesterol diet, and well, the stuff he was told to avoid, is a lot of stuff I have to eat. Talk about fun :? .
I'll muddle through this somehow. I spent two hours asleep yesterday afternoon in the recliner. But then, I had been waking up a lot through the night anyway from really stupid dreams and thinking I hear the puppy falling down the stairs and off the bed, so I wake up Hubby, and Genny is just lying on the bed next to him, oblivious to it all, while I am totally freaked out, thinking she had broken her neck or something.
I did good today. We had taco bell on our way to Hubby's work after his dr's appt, and I left the nasty beans on my nachos. Tonight's dinner is soup made out of yesterday's left over pork roast with rice and corn. Just don't know when that will be yet (things are totally messed up at Hubby's work and we have no clue today when his lunch is, and I have the car so I have to take it to him). I am still feeling bloated from lunch an hour and a half ago.
I should go and try to come up with some menus that we can both eat since we are on opposite ends of the spectrum with diet at the moment. I threatened him with becoming vegetarians after the baby is born, and he just glared at me and basically said over my dead body. It was kind of funny. At least I can go to the diet he is on after Dainyah gets here. I hope. That is unless something else pops up. Like my hypoglycemia acts up worse than it has been (I told them I didn't need the GD test....)
Thanks. Guess I need to find some molasses cookie recipes (I love those kinds of cookies, just never have made them) and maybe gingerbread (I think there is molasses in that).
OH, and I had heard that licorice can induce labor too. On the radio not long ago here, they were talking about a woman who was a week past her due date, and she sent her husband to the pharmacy to get some castor oil for her to drink (that can induce labor, not the way I would chose to do it, but I guess if you are desperate enough.....) Aparently the husband had no clue what castor oil is, so he asked the pharmacist and told her what it was for, and the pharmacist told him to get some black licorice (her sister or SIL had done it with great success). So, he got the black licorice instead, and his wife ate it. The baby ended up coming so fast, it was born at home in their living room with paramedics there. I don't know if I'll try that if I go late, as I HATE licorice of any kind. Though, the more brave of you all can try that if the need arises.....just let me know how it goes.

I became anemic during both of my pregnancies. I took iron pills and was afraid of the side effects as well but i noticed that if i take it before i eat i don't get any side effects. I also took vitamin C and ate alot of greens (veggies). I also know that caffeine blocks of iron absorption as well so try to stay away from that too if you drink anything with caffeine in it.
Renee I have actually heard not to eat liquorice during pregnancy because in high doses it can bring on pre-term (it was on some morning news programme) - I COULD be an old wives tale so to speak.
Probably... I ate a whole lot of it after Abbys birthday because I bought a pack of different shaped licorice to use for the eyes and whiskers and mouth of her cat cake. And there was a lot left over LOL I ate it all! Well, Abby had some of it but not that much LOL

Iron pills can give me constipation but so far so good this time... I think my body just needs a bit of time to get used to them. It's a large amount of iron that I take so yeah...
Pumpkin (complete w/skin) is high in iron, avocado is high in folate etc. There are green veggies with iron in them. Yep silverbeet and spinach! We don't eat those but we normally have Broccoli with our dinner.

I was told to stay away from Tea because of the Tannin in it. That stops you from absorbing iron. I never heard anything about Caffeine though... I drink coffee and it hasn't affected me.
If I take iron pills on an empty tummy then I will have stomach cramps and constipation/diarrheoa. So I take mine with my meals and a large glass of water, juice or milk ;)

I'll try it if I go overdue... ;) But I am guessing it was just a coincidence...
What does Licorcice have in it that would induce labor? It seems a bit weird to me.
I have heard that Raspberry leaf tea could induce labor... so I will probably try that too if I go overdue LOL
I won't try Castor Oil. That can be dangerous for the baby.
They can pass meconium during delivery and inhale it into their lungs and get really sick/die. I read an article in the NZ Womans Day or Womans Weekly about a baby that inhaled meconium... he nearly died.

Well you'd think that I would have gone into preterm labor with the amount I ate! LOL :? Geez it seems like everything is not good for you during pregnancy ...

I doubt that red raspberry leaf tea could induce labor. I try to have one cup every day as much as possible and so far not a hint of preterm labor! My mom took it all the way through her pregnancy with me and swears by it. She says that her labor with me was almost painless and was fast. (Raspberry leaf tea reportedly helps get the uterus into shape and can reduce labor pain) I don't know, maybe if you took it after your due date it would work!
I remember when I was pregnant with the twins people were giving me all these remedies for if I went further, including lots of sex!
In the end, we didn't get to the stage of attempting any remedies because I ended up having a c - section due to pre-eclampsyia 5 wks early.

Yeah, if you look up anemia on the internet all research websites say to stay away from caffeine. I took prenatal pills and iron pills right before eating. So after taking the pills i ate, the only way it worked for me. Guess everyone is different  because if i took it after eating or while eating i would throw up all my food.

I was scheduled to be induced with both my children & dreaded the thought of pitocin and the whole situation, so my hubby & I tried all we could to get me into natural labor. Needless to say the sex, & 4 wheeler rides didn't do anything all that happened was I ended up in the ER triage with kidney stones a day before I was to be induced. I must say though that my labor was much more easy the second time around, if that is any consulation

I was induced and they didn't use the Pitocin drip. They inserted some gel inside and that got things going real fast!
I won't even let them induce me with the drip. Why when they can just use the gel??

I am not sure but this is what it says in my book "It is not recommended that you drink Red Raspberry Leaf tea before 36 weeks of pregnancy. As it tones the muscles of the uterus, there is a fear that it could bring labour forward.
I think all these things are "fears" or "could bes" because I ate a ton of Licorice in May and I didn't go into labour. Pfft! LOL

I was given cervical inserts also, but I wasn't progressing fast enough & my Blood pressure was going higher, ran a fever, so they had to run pit.
Oh that sucks :( I started having contractions within 2 - 2 1/2 hours of having the gel inserted. My labour in total was only 5 hours 20 minutes! Delivery time was only 14 minutes.
My mum told me I better get to the hospital real fast this time! LOL I'm not sure I would have had a labour that fast if I wasn't induced... but who knows. I might end up delivering Sophie in the Ambulance LOL

OOOOOOHHHHHHH, WOW!! I WAS IN LABOR FOR OVER 24 HOURS. THEY ENDED UP HAVING TO PULL MY SON WITH FORCEPS.... DO NOT ADVISE AT ALL. HE ENDED UP HAVING SEIZURES AND FLOWN TO THE CHILDRENS HOSP. ANYWAY, I HOPE THIS DELIVERY GOES AS WELL.
AS FAR AS THE IRON ISSUE, I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED GOOD OL' PEANUT BUTTER, NOT ONLY IS IT GOOD FOR IRON IT IS HIGH IN PROTEIN WHICH IS BENEFICIAL IN PREGNANCIES, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SUFFERING WITH HIGH BP.

Both my sister and I were forceps deliveries with no problems...
I'm sorry to hear about your son. :( The only thing with forceps is the dents they leave in the sides of your head LOL But then with Ventouse you get the cone head affect... At least it doesn't last forever!
Oh no! You can't have peanut butter during pregnancy! Because it can make your baby allergic to peanuts! LOL Just kidding! But they really do say to stay away from peanuts and peanut butter in pregnancy LOL I never listened to that though. And Abby isn't allergic to peanuts or anything else for that matter. It makes me laugh sometimes... all these food warnings etc...
Crissyanna
07-07-2006, 01:11 PM
I eat tons of peanut butter. There are days when it is the only protein I can keep down. That was real bad during first trimester anyway! I think all the food warnings come from rival foods (like the beef association and the pork association fighting as to whose is better, so if you can scare enough people...).
I have had a ton of spinach salad. I am surprised I haven't turned green yet. Tonight we are having a sort of burrito casserole (was going to make it from frozen burritos, but all I could find were ones with sulfite in them, and that is a huge no-no for me), so I got corn tortillas to line the bottom of the pan with and am going to make taco meat and layer that in with refried beans (I don't like those, but I will eat them, they are good for the iron, blech) along with diced tomatoes and cheese. Hubby thinks it sounds good. I'm glad.
Tomorrow is our anniversary, so I am going to do the lamb ribs I have in the freezer. They had them on sale as cheap as ground beef a few weeks ago, so I thought, why not for something different. Now, to just figure out how in the world to cook them. I've never cooked lamb before.....Sure shall be interesting.
I need to go and get some laundry and stuff into the machines.
Oh, and I've been told that pumpkin pumpernickel bread is good in iron as it has molasses and pumpkin in it. I'll see if I can find a recipe and if it is any good. Or plain pumpkin bread.
And if anyone has this problem, I found a great list of high iron foods, including how many miligrams there are in a serving of them at askdrsears.com I think I really like that website. Haven't had much time to go through it, but what I've seen so far has been pretty good. I like the list. I printed it out so I can put that on the fridge with the other lists (my reccomended foods from the midwife's office and Hubby's low cholesterol list).

The idea with avoiding peanuts is that theoretically it might help avoid an allergy in the child if you have a high occurrance of food allergies in your family. I think it is still a theory though. Most people probably wouldn't have any problem with it. I ate heaps of peanuts in the first half of my last pregnancy and Joshua doesn't have any major problem with food allergy so far. We do have a history of dairy allergy in my family, so I asked my doctor about the peanuts and she said not to worry too much about avoiding them completely - if you were being really serious about it you would also have to avoid all those foods that contain traces of peanuts.

Exactly
I was just thinking today about all the foods we are not meant to have because they could have Listeria in them eg soft cheeses. Well just recently they recalled a huge lot of Yoghurt because of Listeria. And Yoghurt is not one of the foods my Bounty book says to stay away from. So it just goes to show that if it's going to happen it's going to happen no matter if you stay away from certain foods or not. I'm just lucky that Fresh N Fruity hasn't been on special recently so I didn't buy any. I've been buying Meadow Fresh instead.
ahhhhhhhh my midwife just told me on Wednesday my iron has dropped from 68 to 14 so she told me to go to the health food shop and ask them for some more natural iron. No wonder I have been feeling so woozy and weird.
BTW you are completely supposed to take Iron just before you eat otherwise it can irritate your stomach. Also vitamin C along side this as this helps your body absorb iron.
I had a major prob with pre-nates and took Flintstones...they somewhat stayed down...
If you don't want to eat meat, I'd check out bean options to boost your iron...It isn't low enough to require iron pills, so just keeping an eye on labels and trying to eat foods that have a higher percentage of iron should help you without overdoing or consuming things that could be harmful..
If the smell doesn't bother you while they simmer, dry beans tend to have more iron than canned..I just checked a bag vs. a can 15% to 6%..So all those additives cancel stuff out alot of the time..
Best of luck, you'll figure it out...
I survived off of ice chips the first 8mo and big macs the last month and half :D
Some old lady told me I should be eating charcoal when I was sick  I just strongly thought NOT

HMMMM Well normal hemoglobin is 11.7 to 15.5 So that one has me baffled. But taking iron with food and vitamin C is right on the money! Hope all you moms are feeling better! [girlsmiley]
Definately different measurement systems I think Leslie  ... :?:
I checked my notes after seeing you were :?: and it definatey says up in the corner, my beginning reading was 68... so it would have to be our different ... measurement tables. Makes it all the more confusing.
 Anyways, all I know is I have to take the iron 3 x daily.
BTW there are things that can stop us from absorbing the iron even with a good diet and what I saw people were mentioning about caffine and tannin is true - (I have a VERY good diet with heaps of veg etc etc) - it's been explained to me by two health practitioners about the vitamin C. A herbalist lady told me even to drink a glass of OJ (real OJ) Before taking the iron to help it get through.
I still have my one coffee a day and the midwife told me not to drink it while eating, directly after eating or directly before eating and that if I wanted to continue to drink the coffee a day (which she wasn't telling me off at all) she said space it an hour away from eating because of all of that. No one had told me that before :!: :!:

Duh! How typically American arrogant! I have heard just as many things as well about caffeine. Caffeine can make your uterus irritable too because it dehydrates you and pulls fluid from your system. I had teenage girls come in with perterm labor like symptoms and the only reason was dehydration and drinking too much Mountain Dew, which is a highly caffeinated soda. We would start an IV run in some fluids and the contractions would stop! I got to the point that I would siply ask theteengers, " How much Mountain Dew do you drink?"
I was told my Ferriten level was only 13 and should be about 20. It's not the Haemaglobin ... it's something else but also to do with iron levels/stores. It's confusing LOL
Anyway, my iron tablets have added vitamin C in them. If I can just remember to actually take them
I'm not really worried because I have two cups of Milo a day and it says that two servings provides 100 percent of your RDI for Iron... and I don't care if I am low in iron as long as baby is getting enough and I know she is because they always suck all your stores up and leave you empty LOL
Leslie, I don't really drink mountain dew but I had NO IDEA that had caffine in it! WOW!
