Are you doing summer homework?

I know we should be doing academics daily, but there's so much else to do it seems that when the time opens up it's too late already and ds is too tired to do his work well.

I trick him sometimes, like writing thank you notes for his birthday presents. :lol:

I'm just not into structure and routines. I grab teachable moments as they come. Do you think that's enough? I just don't want him to be behind when he goes to first grade in the fall. (Aiden is my 1st elem. child so I need advice :wink: )

I'm in the same boat. DD will be in 1st this fall and I don't want her to forget everything she's learned so far. I would like to do something daily only it hasn't been working out that way so far. Either reading, some writing, a worksheet. We have a couple of math games she likes because they are fun and she still is learning. I want her to keep a summer journal with pictures and writing. Her K teacher was big on journaling and I think it's a good idea, however she has been resistent to the idea. She thinks that just because it's summer she doesn't have to do any work. :wink:

We've been working on reading and they have to read a book a day. But for the most part I have really been focusing on keeping them active. We swim, go to the park, bike ride. It gets so hot here in July and August that we will probably have a little more inside time and I will have them do more writing papers and stuff. Both of their teachers sent stuff home for the summer.

At the end of each school year, the school sends home a flyer on Summer Vacation workbook with Reader Rabbit software designed to get them ready for next year. Everyday they have to complete their assignment(s) for that day. My 7 year old loves it. :wink:

We just started Mario Typing! But they think it is a game! :lol:
If I gave them actual paper work...I think they would flip! [whateeeeeksign] Football starts in full swing soon and with all the summer activity, we do no FORMALIZED school in the summer! I think I would flip! [rofl]

We do...Actually I got in trouble last night because I was too tired to have homeschool for our usual 2hrs a night...She was thoroughly ticked with me.. :evil:

I really liked what you said, Rach, about grabbing "teachable moments". We have always tried to do this with our kids, looking for windows that open up to teach them. (Actually, dh is better at this. :D ) Every day there are little moments that you can communicate practical lessons (and spiritual lessons).

I don't remember having a structured summer educational plan, but we went to the library every two weeks like clockwork. I also read to them and eventually they read to each other. :D

Same here. Today we learned what happens when teenagers leave the lights on in their cars :lol: We also skimmed over what happens when teenagers forget to change the oil :roll: All curtiousy of my neice :D
