Do you want to accelerate your Christian growth? There is a way! It is not through knowledge, seminary, effort, or a strong resolve. In fact, I imagine in several lifetimes the majority would never discover the simple way to accelerate growth. But here it is: REST! That is right, just rest. In the midst of suffering, darkness, emotional swings, broken relationships, or unfulfilled dreams, just rest in Christ. The book of Hebrews addresses a group of believers with heaps of problems. Of all the stupid things these believers did, one thing stood out; they were neglecting REST! "Therefore let us fear lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it" (Hebrews 4:1). Who would have thought it? The deep Christian life is suited for weak people. Is anyone too weak to rest? I listened to a sermon that a dear elderly sister in Christ preached at her grown son's funeral. This child had been the cause of much heartache for his mother throughout his life, yet she was grateful for him because his behavior had driven her to Christ in increasingly deeper ways. She trusted God for his salvation and rested! A few weeks before his death, he called for her and asked to receive Christ into his life.
When we play God, we cannot rest, for God is always working. For those who fear passivity, Jesus gives us a work to do! "Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent" (John 6:29).
