Does anyone have any recommendations for nursing shawls? This is my third baby but the first I am going to attempt to nurse. I would like to have something to keep covered and don't really trust a blanket to stay in place when needed. Thanks in advance for your help.

Tee hee- I was apple picking and then walking around wal-mart nursing brandon under just a receiving blanket draped over my shoulder and tucked into my pants just today. Check babies-r-us, they had at one point a large "bib" looking thing (like what a hair dresser would wrap around your neck for a hair cut) that had mesh material at the top (around the neck). It kept you covered up but, you could also view the baby through the mesh at the top. If you are interested in baby wearing- you could go with a ring sling style with a tail. . .also try some of the maternity stores for nursing tops, they may aid in your efforts to stay discreat. Good luck=) -ren

I've recently seen things that look exactly like a full apron (and may actually be one!), but I think are specifically made for nursing mothers...like with more coverage than an actual apron. It would be easy to make if you wanted too...

There are these things called Hooter Hiders (hehe). The name is really funny but they are supposed to be great. Here is a link but if you google it you can find lots of choices:

A friend of mine just found a nice, cheap shawl at Goodwill and used it last winter. It was perfect! It was the in style thing, so she was all hip lookin' AND sufficiently covered while nursing. It was her 2nd child, first to nurse, so she was a bit self-conscious about NIP. The shawl really helped her.

Now that I think about it, that would be a great idea! I have 3 ponchos (that's what my teenage students call them) that would be great for NIP. Mine are black, khaki and red. Hope you find something that works for you!

Thank you all for your responses! I work for a plumber and hvac contractor and the baby will be with me (I only work 4 hours a week with them) but I know at some point I will have to nurse in front of them and want to make sure everything stays covered as I know it will be uncomfortable for them as it will be me!

Ha, ha!! Saw the hooter hiders! Loved the name. I was telling my brother about it, as his wife is nursing their 2 month old. He laughed and said, just imagine if someone at church asks you what you are wearing!!

I think I'm leaning toward the ones that are bib like instead of the ones that have elastic under one arm. I'm afraid the elastic would wear out. Unfortunatley we don't have any nursing stores in our town. The only maternity store is about 40 mins away as well as babies-r-us. Maybe I can talk hubby into a little trip!

Thanks again for all your advice!

If ya sew they are SUPER easy to make and you can get fabric cheap at Wal-mart (can you say $1 bin? gol). Anyway...

Cut a square 26" x 35" (unless you'd like bigger) of your chosen fabric. Cut another square of equal size to coordinating fabric (terry cloth is GREAT as it can serve as a drool/milk catcher). Cut 2 pieces 14" x 3" for your strap. (You can sew on a d-ring to adjust your straps or tie them later).

Sew 2 large squares right sides together using 1 " seam allowance leaving top open to turn out. Turn out and press.

Fold straps in half right sides together using 3/8" seam allowance leave on end free and turn out. Turn out and press. Attach between large squares. Fold raw edges in and stitch through all layers close to edge. Topstitch through all layers 1 inch away from square edge (so fabric won't move). You can finish by adding a cloth loop and ribbon with velcro to attach a toy or pacifier.

I know it sounds like a lot but really the covers are large squares with a neck band so...why spend $12 (or MORE)when ya can make your own unique one? JMOT. ;) Take care and happy nursing! ~Kerri

Poncho! That's it. Thank you! LOL
I knew they had another name. That's exactly what my friend used, the poncho.

Ok, that's all.
