We made our own too... we got our stainless rings at slingrings.com... we have had ours for almost two years, used CONSTANTLY and have never had a sign of weakness in them. Flukes happen... this is one of those flukes... I feel bad for them.. now they'll have everybody wanting to return their slings, problem or not.
