i know some of you use the bumbo chair and I have been wanting to get it for my dd. Whats ur thoughts bout the article below? I think if used properly it would be a great product.

I don't have one myself, but I think as with a lot of things, you need to use it appropriately. The injuries mentioned in that article were (as far as I could tell) all from babies that were in the bumbo on a table or countertop. (insert shocked smilie - eek!) If you use it on the floor with close supervision you would probably be fine. My sil has one for her kids and has never had a problem.

I'm thinking..as with any baby product...use with supervision. Hello!
DON'T use on a counter or table top. And if using in a chair at the table, as an ordinary booster, use SUPERVISION. A kid can easily wiggle/fall out of other boosters too. Yes, I believe the risk is higher with these due to the way the child is 'wedged' in there. It gives a false sense of balance and security. And then the child is just 'stuck' if they begin to fall. The Bumbo will go from 'just fine' to 'oh shoot the kid is falling' in a snap, ya know? And they're targeting it at younger babies who haven't the control to stop or right themselves in the first place.
A child who *is* able to sit well and catch oneself in a fall would have a difficult time doing such in this seat, let alone a child who is *not* capable, kwim?
Anywho, guess I'm rambling.
Doesn't mean I wouldn't use it. Just, not on a counter or table top. Duh! And if in a chair, with supervision. And if with a younger baby, only on the floor. But I think they're targeting too young of an age group with it...3 months ?? Come ON now! But anywho, that's just me. I'm a 'the kid will reach milestones when they reach 'em' kind of gal : wink :

Umm...even if it showed and says that it's fine to use on a higher surface, I sure as heck wouldn't! Even without hearing about these injuries! We don't have one...but I don't see the harm in using them in an apropriate manner.

Yikes!! That made me feel a little sick to my stomach thinking about those poor babies falling!! uggghh!!! I borrowed one from a friend for my youngest ds and I loved it, I even sat him in the shower in it and he loved that (we didn't have a bath tub) but it is definitely only for use on a low surface!

didn't read the article, but we use Patrick's in a regular dining room chair now. ONLY if we're in there. (DUH)
Otherwise, when he's in it, it's on the floor.
As long as ADULT SUPERVISION is involved, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVe (can't say love enough) my bumbo. (and saying that, I should add, we bought ours when you *had* to order from GB. So instead of $40, we have just under $100 in ours once we paid shipping/customs all that stuff. it was like 78 something, total. But we LOVE it.

I never sit anything anywhere but floor level with kiddos in it! I think the bumbo is a terrific thing though if used with direct supervision like most things! I loveeeeeddddd mine for my little guy this summer (he was using it until 9 months...) because I could sit in the kiddie pool with him and he could sit in it while he couldn't sit alone, but that way I had my hands free to play with my three year old too while we all chilled in the pool! It doesn't get hurt by the water and is soft on the tushy! LOL

thanks for the post...although I wasn't planning on using it other then the floor, it has at least helped me think about getting one in a new light. I think I will still get one eventually since I am planning on using it for feeding Josh once he is on solids. we don't have a dining table, or room for a high chair (really small apartment) so I figure I could use one of those chairs on the floor to feed him in. defiantly won't leave him alone though because I figure even on the floor it could tip forward and then be a potential suffocation hazard

Savedngrace I found the little bouncy chairs great for when they were starting on solids. I also used the bumbo to feed my youngest in too, but I think the bouncy chair was better!

I have a Bumbo and the instructions that say NOT to use it on a raised surface are pretty clear. I only use it on the floor with my little one and I always keep the back of the Bumbo near something, like the loveseat or his packnplay bec I am paranoid and do alot of "just in case" things no matter how safe a product is supposed to be. I love it because it lets him "play" with me and my oldest and my hands are free to really interact with my 3yr old, too.

We have one and have used it with Landon since he was 3 months old. We ONLY use it on the floor and if we're sitting there with him. We always make sure he has supervision for any baby product/item we're using. I also use it as a portable highchair when we go out. But if it's on a chair, I sit directly in front of him with my legs on each side of the chair. He's never there alone. I can't believe parents would do that! It's the same as the bouncers - you hear so often when parents will put it in the middle of the kitchen table while they work. I will never understand that theory.
We also bought the tray to go with it. It makes it nicer to feed him and place toys on it for him to play with. He's only in it for about 15 minutes a day. Not too long.
I feel it's perfectly safe when used smartly.
