I started a thread on here before about head lice but I think it was before the site crashed. Head lice is going around again and what things can be done to prevent my children from getting them? I have heard that tea tree oil can prevent them and that using hair products such as hairspray and gel can also prevent them. Any ideas ladies? Thanks, Stephanie

 No clue on that one! Check the hair every day?! UGH! Never had to deal with that! At least not yet anyway. Hope it doesn't invade your home! :o Sorry. No ideas.
baby oil for boys
hair gel for girls
no guarantee but it has worked before

Here is a pretty comprehensive site, but it seems to offer a non-chemical approach:

Thanks for the info ladies! Madre that site helped alot. I had heard of hair gel but not baby oil, Angelsmom, but it makes sense because I have always heard that they can attached themselves to oily hair. Thanks again. Stephanie
Yeah I heard about hairspray...
Keep hair short? And tied back. I had long thick hair as a kid and I had headlice a few times... UGH
If you do end up with them the best things my mum found were those combs and the spray that you spray on, leave in for so long and wash out. The spray worked better than the shampoo!

I have been helping a friend get rid of her dd lice and it has seemed like a never ending ordeal. I used to be a hairstylist and so I know a few things. Other than the over the counter items the tea tree oil works really good. Mayo is also another good thing. Cover the hair with lots of mayo and leave on for about an hour or so and then take a wide tooth comb and run through it then rinse it completely out. Also do not share any combs or brushes and take all of your brushes and soak them for awhile in hot hot water. Also you want to wash all of the child's bedding in hot water. I hope this helps some. My friend's dd was still having trouble and so we did end up cutting a lot off and it was sad for the little girl because she was growing her hair for Locks of Love (the charity where the hair is used to make wigs for cancer patients) I told her that she needed to get this problem taken care of so that when it was grown out they would be able to take her hair.

Hello, well my mom works in the migrant/seasonal head start. ANd they wash the kids hair with dawn dish soap (Plain Blue) That is what they do until its under control. And Also I have heard mayo. (EWE)
Hope that helps. Ihave never personly dealt with it. But this is what I know they do there..

Thanks ladies for all the great advice! I'm just so paranoid and worried about them getting it that it feels good to know what I can do if it happens. Thanks again! :D Stephanie
