As I posted in the prayer request section, my son broke his jaw playing football and now has his mouth wired shut for 6 weeks. He can only take in liquid food. It has to have a thin consistency because it has to be able to go through his closed teeth. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please share them.

Thank you!

ow your poor son I will pray that he heals quickly, on this subject though soup is usually good. I am not sure if you can get cup a soup over there but anything like that through a stray. Failing that is there anything that your doctor could recomend, like build up milk shakes.

Thank you!

He can't use a straw. I am adding protein powder to almost everything that I'm making and that is mostly shakes. I've done stuff with mostly fruit, ice cream, milk, peanut butter, Carnation Instant Breakfast mixes, and yogurt. He has also had chicken broth. I'm just looking for more options because this is going to get old for him quick.

Gaspacho??? Ok, so my spelling is probably all wrong. Anyway, it's the cold tomato, pepper spicy soup. I don't know what all goes in it but I love the stuff!!!! It's purreed so he should be able to drink it...

If he can't use a straw, how exactly are you feeding him?

That sounds great except that one of the few things he doesn't like is tomatoes. Thank you for the idea, though.

He uses a cup, pours a little bit in his mouth, lets it flow through his teeth and down his throat. One reason that we have to keep it all pretty thin and liquidy (a new word?) is that whatever goes in must be able to get out the same way for in case he throws up. Sorry about the overshare here but it is very scary for the person when they are throwing up and they need to know that since in went in, it will be able to come back out.

All I can suggest is protien shakes but alternate the flavours, what about a Bovril drink or something like that. I am praying for him it must be really scary for him and not a nice thing to go through.

If I think of anything I will let you know, have you tried google, it might bring something up in a search.

Thank you for the prayers!

What is a Bovril drink?

I have been googling all day and just keep coming up with the same old stuff.

Is Bovril like Ensure??? Seems like I've read that somewhere before.

I have a soup cookbook at home I will look through tonight and see if there are any thin/pureed soups in it. I remember a cold cucumber dill one...hmm...not sure if that sounds very apetizing to me, but maybe he'd like it???

Does he like beans? I wonder if you could puree a bean soup for him? Not sure if it would be thin enough or not,but it would be some extra protein for him and a different taste. Split pea soup? Hmm...I think I have a good project for tonight!!! I am going through my cookbooks!!!

WOW. If you don't mind me asking, why can't he put the straw to the side of his mouth and use it? When I worked in the drs office, during that time, we had two patients who had their mouth wired and they put the straw to the side of their cheek. (I'm not questioning you, just why? Does that make sense? I've just never seen or hear of an occurance where the patient couldn't. Just curious).

I don't think I know of anything, but KNOW, please KNOW that I'll keep him in my prayers.

He is not a picky eater and likes just about everything. And he knows that we will be limited by what he can eat so he is willing to try whatever I put before him. So show me the recipes and I'll try them out. Thank you for the ideas and for joining me in my "project"!

I don't mind anyone asking any questions so ask away!

We thought, at first, that he would be using a straw. It might be because he has 3 fractures and 2 of them are in the back where he would be putting that straw and maybe it would just be too painful. But I think that it is mostly because if he were to use a straw then it would allow thicker, chunkier foods to enter his mouth and if he were to throw up, that it would take too long or be too difficult for the larger pieces to find there way back out and end up choking him. The doctor has been very adamant about what goes in must be able to come back out.

Here is the overshare again so beware. When my son was still in the hospital, about 12 hours after surgery, he threw up (this was at 4:15am on Sunday). He hadn't had anything to eat by mouth since 3:30pm on Friday. He had gotten some fluids by IV. He was in the bathroom leaning over the toilet, throwing up, but yet not in the usual way. It was just slowly draining out of his mouth and through his teeth. When I saw this it really hit me that the thinner that the liquid is that goes in his mouth the easier it will be on him if it has to come back out. And I knew that I don't want him to have to go through that again. We both realized that it can happen and that he will survive it if it does, but that we don't want it to happen again, ever!

I don't know if that helps or if I just made you head for the bathroom yourself. I'm sorry if it was too much to share but it really is hard to understand until you see it or experience it yourself.

Here are two I came up with. Maybe he'll be able to eat them. I've had both of them before and know they taste good (to me at least). They may be a bit off the wall for him, but it would be something different. Right? Anyway, I'll keep looking!

Black Bean Soup
2 tsp. vegetable oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 3/4 cups chicken broth
1 can tomatoes, pureed
3 cans black beans drained rinsed and pureed
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp. garlic powder
salt & pepper to taste

Heat oil in 5 quart pan over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often, until golden. Add 1 3/4 cups broth, tomatoes, beans, and seasonings. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered for 7-10 minutes. Add more broth if soup is too thick consistency.

Spinach & Buttermilk Soup
1 10 ounce package frozen chopped spinach
4 cups chicken broth
2 tablespoons grated lemon peel
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 cups buttermilk
salt & pepper to taste

Combine spinach and 2 cups of broth in 4 quart pan. Bring to a boil over high heat, using a spoon to break spinach apart. As soon as spinach is broken into chunks, pour mixture into a blender, add lemon peel and process until a smooth puree. In pan, mix remaing 2 cups of broth with cornstarch until smooth, add spinach mixture. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring often. Mix in buttermilk and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. More broth can be added if too thick consistency.

check out allrecipes.com. They have tons of soup recipes.

Also, maybe you could get a juicer that will do veggies too. You could mix all kinds of juices & veggie juices are more filling than fruit juice.
