Which is best when a baby has a fever. Tylenol or motrin?

I've not heard of giving motrin. There is baby Tylenol. I've never used anything, yet. Dd's highest temp was 101 or so. I've heard temps are caused by the body trying to fight something so I don't think I'd give her anything unless it reached 102 or if she was acting different.

Hi! Never Motrin with a fever. Can cause... what's it called? Rhyes Syndrome? I'm not sure, but can be dangerous. Tylenol is supposed to be safe.

Really?! Oh my! I've actually used children's motrin for my daughter. :oops: If dangerous than i wonder why it sold or even made? :shock: :?

I've never heard of Motrin causing Rhyes syndrome, but I've heard that aspirin can. There are otc products that contain aspirin, but Motrin is ibuprofen.

I can't say if one is better than the other, but I usually used ibuprofen at bedtime because it is suppose to last longer, eight hours as opposed to four. There were times my kids had bad fevers and the pediatrician told me to alternate between the two, giving the acetaminophen every four hours and ibuprofen every eight. But I never did it without checking with my kids' doctor first.

I am a RN. I used to work at Children's Hospital in Columubs Ohio. Motrin is okay to give a baby. It is not aspriin, which is what you should never give children because it causes Rye Syndrome. You should always check with your doctor for dosing for infants under 2. BUT despite the fact they say Motrin is okay...I use it with caution. I use Tylenol during the day for fever if it is helping. I use Motrin at night. Motrin lasts eight hours and Tylenol only 4. So I save the Motrin for night time use. I will give Motrin during the day if the fever is very high and the Tylenol seems not to bring it down. Motrin is hard on your stomach if used a lot over time, which is why I use Tylenol when I can and save the Motrin for night when you want them to sleep! :)

My children's peditrician has always told me that Motrin last longer and it is best to use for earaches, headaches and sore throats. Tylenol doesn't work very well and only last for a very short period of time. Stephanie

Yes,I agree. Motrin often times is better with certain pain than Tylenol!

Sorry about the misinformation, Girls. I thought that because asprin and motrin were both aniinflmmatories that can cause bleeding, they were similar in their effect on children with fevers. Good to know the truth. I've been avoiding motrin when dealing with our kids' fevers even though the risk of Reyes syndrome is low even with asprin.

I think the ped told me not to use motrin until Ian was over a certain weight (can't remember what the weight was though, sorry). But I just use Tylenol. Motrin if he get shots, more though because his little legs get stiff and soar, but just for a fever, I like Tylenol.

My cousin died back in the day when mother's were told to give asprin to their babies...She was 4yrs old :(

I've often heard that Motrin is compared to the potency of aspirin so I stay away from it..

We always used Tylenol...

MIL gave Angela Motrin the other day though....told me about it later.... :roll:

My dr and the dosage chart he gave me to use says no motrin till after 6 months. Tylenol safe from birth on in correct dosages.

We use Tylenol more often then motrin but I have some on hand for serious stuff...seems that the serious stuff always happens after hours or on weekend, so I have motrin for the times that I need to alternate with high fever to get them through to the next day.
