Does anyone out there just get plain mean when they are hungry?
I am 32 weeks and for the last couple of weeks anytime I have to wait to eat, it's like I turn into this surly unruly gizzly bear. [crytantrum] I actually feel bad after I eat and usually have to apologize. I really try to be nice and patient but it seems like it's impossible if I am hungry.

Karla, I battle hypoglycemia and when my blood-sugar drops too quickly the first sign I notice is irritability. The next is foggy thinking and fatigue. When you're pregnant your blood-sugar can drop really fast. I had crackers in my purse and car and a little bowl of nuts out in the house all the time. A cracker while waiting for a meal can be very helpful. Also, blood-sugar can drop really fast as your body prepares itself for food. In other words, when you smell cooking or you're waiting in a restaurant is another good time to be prepared. A couple of years ago I fainted in a steak house restaurant. We had to wait for like, an hour and fifteen minutes for our dinner. Service was terrible and I wanted to hurt someone.! That's very uncharacteristic for me. :D

hahah yeah, when I say I am hungry DH knows I have to have food N-O-W.
He doesn't even question it!!!
My multiple trips to the pantry after dinner would probably cause him concern if I wasn't pregnant though LOL! I seem to have dinner and then fossick, a glass of milk here, some juice, some water LOL.

If I don't eat when I'm hungry, I have been known to get sick. Like headache, nausea, dry heaving. I have always been hypoglycemic. I have learned, if I am hungry, eat. However, I gained ten pounds last month (I am pretty sure most of it is water weight), the midwife got after me for it, and told me to cut back. She thinks I have GD now, and that lovely test is scheduled for the third. Talk about fun.

Hey AussieMum, what's fossick? Just a little curious.. I've never heard of it before. I do know what vegemite is though!
Crystal
Ah, vegemite. That stuff is so gross (no offense)!!
So what if you're plain mean even if you're NOT hungry? For a period of about, say, 9 months?? :D Okay, okay, I'm not that bad, but I do get pretty irritable when I'm hungry. It's worse when I've got to cook the meal and I know it's going to take some time.

A huge ditto to you Beck. It is the worst when I am cooking. I just have started busting the carrots and dip out before I even start cooking and that is controlling the beast (some)
Crystal
Fossick means to foridge, look for food -
I don't eat Vegemite, Promite is far nicer. I hate peanut butter and jelly :P -
I guess vegemite is a bit like putting beef stock on your toast.
Yep LOL Watch out if I'm hungry HAHA I'll tear your head off. Ok ok I'm not that bad but I am GRUMPY. I did once yell at my mum when Abby was little because I was soooo hungry and she was trying to tell me how to put her in the stroller... she should have been sitting up not lying down. I told her to leave the parenting up to me... but not in such nice wording

Thanks for the definition.
My great-aunt's step son and wife live in NZ. She and her late husband went down to visit one year at Christmas time. She tried vegemite then. She told me and my sister that it tasted like how grease for ball bearings smell. I thought it sounded icky.

I like the comparison! My husband's uncle is from Australia and he swears by Vegemite. He said it's an aquired taste (or something you need to be fed from birth to appreciate).

Aussie Mum, you hate pb&j? How can that be? :D Now, many Americans probably don't LOVE pb&j, and probably never CRAVE pj&j, but to go so far as to HATE our 'All American' sandwich... Well, I just don't know how to process this imformation. :o

I had a week where all I wanted was PB&J. Ever had it with cheese?? My mom used to make it that way and...I like it. [shhh] (Although, I'm not sure if I still do as it's been a loooong time since I've had one.)
My pg was rough so hunger wasn't much of an issue but I too am hypoglycemic and have to carry food and water everywhere I go..I get extremely moody when my blood sugar drops..

What kind of cheese and what kind of jelly?

PBJ and cheese! I just had on the other day! I love those sandwhiches. (during my first trimester, it was the only thing that sounded good to me most days that I could gag down) I just use strawberry jelly and american cheese. I hate grape jelly.
My mom introduced me to that sandwhich when I was little. It would gross out the kdis at school (I would also take slices of green pepper to eat, that really got the others at the lunch table gagging). My mom eats that sandwich but also puts green olives on it. I hate green olives, so I don't. She loves it.
Now, I like peanut butter, banana and cheese sandwhiches too.
Crystal
Hey Joy, either strawberry or grape and American cheese. That's the best!
My mom introduced me to that sandwhich when I was little. It would gross out the kdis at school
YUP!! I thought it was normal. Then someone asked what the yellow stuff on my sandwich was and when I told them, they freaked out.
Now, the green olives...that's just wrong. (Mainly because any kind of olives shouldn't be allowed in the human mouth!!) But I will have to try a peanut butter banana and cheese sandwich. Another one to try...peanut butter, banana and honey sandwiches. Now, those rock!
JoyLynn

Hahaha! :D I love olives! :D This is the first time I've ever heard of cheese on a pb&j. Doesn't 'sound' good, but I'm willing to try new things. I'll give it a whirl and let y'all know what I think of it. But not today... my tummy has hated me for about a week, now. :?
Joy [welcomewave]
Out of curiosity, I think I might have to try the pbj and cheese tomorrow, too!

Okay, I'll try to be brave by lunchtime and let you know.
I tried it as a late breakfast. It was okay, but I don't see myself ever eating cheese on my pb&j again.
The all American Sandwhich? Are you related to Jared Fogle by any chance, it sounds like Fogel talk there!
How can you mix crushed up salty nuts with squished up fruit LOL. One is salty and the other is sickly sweet? I hate jam (jelly) because it is too sweet but I like peanut butter.
I had my friend from the US live with me for 6 months and one day I was sick in bed and she mistook our lemon spread for plain jelly and she mixed it with vegemite thinking it was similar to your PBJ and put it on my toast - ahhh I hid it under my bed needless to say LOL LOL.
Renee... a girl after my own heart. :D
Joy [welcomewave]
LOL :D Well I like pretty much everything except I will not mix weird things together... so please don't dare me to try any of the suggestions posted HAHA I'm not that brave!

Aaaaaahh, yeeesssss... The old dare and ditch. Well, don't think the thought hadn't crossed my mind more than a few times... [whatthink]
Okay, so I did it. Umm-hmm. [OK] But I looked more like this... :| only greener and with trembling.
I had an audience... the kids, of course... They vacillated between cheering me on with the look of horror on their faces... "mom-my... mom-my... mom-my!", and reminding me that I needn't succumb to peer pressure.
Ya know? It wasn't bad at all. I know... I'm shocked! My tummy was summersaulting the whole time I was making it. We didn't have American cheese, so I used Cheddar. I cringed when I put the cheese on after the grape jelly. :? It tasted nothing like I thought it would. The cheese and the pnutbtr blended and you could barely taste the cheese.
I made the kids each take a bite. We were all pleasantly surprised. :D I don't know if I'll ever eat it again or not. I don't eat many sammies. I will, however, encourage others to do so. I'll pull out the old "double-dog-dare" if need be. [rofl]
Miss joylynn [welcomewave]
Aussie Mum, who's Jared Fogel? And, what about peanutbutter cups? Those are yummy.

ITA I love Peanut Butter cups!
Are you KIDDING who is Jared Fogle? The SUBWAY DUDE! The guy who reckons he was overweight and lost all his weight by eating Subway.
Now I am craving ice cold Ribena with ice blocks and put in the freezer for five minutes...
Does anyone know about the cream cheese issue? I am wondering if I can eat cream cheese spread as in the KRAFT sandwhich spread, it is totally different to say Philidelphia or the kind you use to make cheesecake, so I am assuming they are two different things. I keep smelling it when I make DD's breakfast and drooling.
Might show my doctor next time I see him if no one knows
I never knew what the Subway Jared's last name was!
You can have cream cheese because it's pasturized. I would DIE without cream cheese!!!

You mean the Kraft cheese spread that comes in a jar? Oh yeah I'm sure it's fine! It's just the mouldy cheeses that we are supposed to stay away from isn't it? I'm sure Philadelphia cream cheese is fine too. But maybe I have no idea  I would eat it that's all I can say  I love Philadelphia especially the one that has the sweet chilli sauce on it YUMMY
[claploud] YAY creamcheese! mmm going to eat some!
I have heard lots of places the stuff you make cheesecake with is a no no because of listeria ??? Oh tho I know what you mean about the sweetchili phili. DROOOL.
Jared Fogle no longer appears in Subway Ads in Australia, there is another man who shouts out "SUBWAY EAT FRESH!" and Jared is no more.
Subway is gross. Why do they toast them it just makes the bun flake everywhere.
Who eats pizza with the works on it? I eat it because the processed meat is cooked (the salami, ham etc). Except all the pizza joints have gone down hill in Australia so it all tastes like pukorama.

Yeah I think I heard that about Cheesecake but I have eaten it during pregnancy... no problem. I wonder how much stuff my mother ate that we are not meant to eat now. It's ridiculous IMO if you can eat it when you aren't pregnant and not have to worry about Listeria then why suddenly have to worry about it? I've never had Listeria from anything before... and I wouldn't buy something from some place if it looked unhygienic. I just check the expiry dates on everything

I don't like Subway. I can make myself a sandwich at home. When I go out to eat I want something I cannot make myself! Like KFC or McDonalds or PizzaHut or Chinese or Indian... yeah I guess you get the drift HAHA And who wants to eat healthy when the whole idea of takeaways is that it isn't good for you! And who wants to eat Subway for breakfast or dinner? I just don't get that. A sandwich or roll is lunch IMO I couldn't eat one at breakfast or dinner time. :?

I eat processed meats anyway... but yeah I eat Pizza! We had PizzaHut the other night. I didn't like the one I got though... but I know for next time. It seems that it just doesn't taste the same anymore but maybe that's just because I've got fussier tastes now  I haven't yet tried Dominoes.
I tried Pizza Haven but I didn't think much of it. And I've had the Hell's Pizza. That is nice. I think I would buy that instead of PHut if it wasn't so expensive.

Oh, and the new guy for Subway is Jon Lovitz. He's gone downhill, hasn't he???

it is because listeria is only really dangerous for the elderly, people with immune disorders, small children and unborn babies.
It wouldn't really do much to endanger a normal healthy person (except flu like symptoms), but for the above group it can be deadly.
What is with the pizza going downhill BTW, what do you think?
Beck I ate the creamcheese and it make me feel queezy [whateeeeeksign] so unfair LOLS!

Yeah I know what I mean is if we don't worry about it when we aren't pregnant (have you ever gotten Listeria from anything?) then why should we avoid all these foods now? I know where I am getting things from and I know that they aren't going to have Listeria in them (I'm not going to go and get a ham and cheese sandwich from a Chinese shop KWIM) so why stop eating all those things? ... ok I don't know for sure but if I've never got it before then it's highly unlikely that I'm going to get it now.
I know why Listeria is dangerous when you are pregnant because it can cause miscarriage. And yes I am taking the risk eating all those things but I wouldn't do it if I had any doubts. As long as the food is fresh and has been kept refrigerated/frozen or kept really hot and as long as I heat things up (like cold chicken) until they are piping hot then I am not worried.
I don't know what's happened to Pizza. I miss it though... I used to LOVE getting PizzaHut meat lovers with BBQ sauce on a pan base. Now it just doesn't taste the same.
Or retardation/birth defects.
I am not so sure either to be honest Renee, there are some things I plain won't eat but then I will ask Mum what she did and didn't eat and she basically said they were never told a thing about listeria !!!
I still indulge in one daily coffee, then drink decaff tea - and I did in my last preg, because no one EVER told me not to eat chocolate and drink coffee/tea.
HA me give up chocolate! [rotflol] That's a joke! It would NEVER happen  I have Milo every day as well.
I read you can drink up to 3 cups of coffee a day...
I occasionally drink coffee but I LOVE my Milo!

Ok, for us ignorant Americans here, what is Milo? This inquiring mind wants to know.
MILO absolutely rocks, it is a little like hot chocolate but milk chocolate not a darker chocolate drink. It's not like you mix cocoa in with water.. it's more mild.
Renee do you love to have half a glass of milk and put heaps of milo in there and eat the damp milo out of the glass mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Yeah I read 1-2 cups of coffee.

Milo sounds wonderful! I wish I could get some. We have Nestle's Quick here. Is that similar?
No it's not similar to quick, but I love quick too.
Milo is granulated like coffee... but it doesn't taste like quick...
You know what I love Crystal are those Jollyranchers in watermelon flavour. I always get my friend in the states to send me a few packs at Christmas... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

So, then is Milo close to ovaltine?
I have to run and get hubby from work now, so I'm signing off for the night. It's been fun learning Aussie and (I don't know what to call New Zealand, sorry) speak!
I think so... but much nicer!
Ovaltine is chocolate right? Not malt? I love Horlicks but that is Malt.... and it's really expensive. :(

Coles has made it's own brand of nesquik recently it's cheaper...
New Zealand speak is called KIWI.
I guess it's kind of like Ovaltine (the Milo) ... I love ovaltinis yumms.

Ovaltine is chocolate. I've never seen Horlicks but in a specialty catalog. And it was insanely expensive, so I've never tried it.
Ok, so I am learning Kiwi (I should have known that one. Sorry. Preggo brain. I have some step second-cousins who live on South Island.)
Not sure if it's a pregnancy thing, but I've been CRAVING chocolate milk and hot cocoa lately. You guys and your MILO/Quick/Ovaltine talk is just making my mouth water! The strange thing is that it's almost 90 over here and hot chocolate still sounds good! Must be pregnancy.

Where in the South Island are your step cousins? They are having a lot of bad weather there right now. Some of them have lost power due to heavy snow.

I'm not sure where my step cousins live down there. All I know is that Kem and Mary have a sheep ranch or something like that. My great-aunt (his step mom) brought my sister and I each a sheep skin from the last time they flew out there from their farm. I know they aren't home much. He likes adventure stuff. Like mountain biking in odd places, and I think I was told once he led a trip of people to see antartica or something. Not my idea of fun, but hey, guess someone has to. Kem is from the states originally. His dad married my great-aunt after his mom died. I was a freshman in high school when they got married (they were in their seventies then). Uncle Frank died my second year of college. I know aunt hasn't been back to NZ to see them since then (that was six, seven years ago) but they have come over here to see her a few times and go biking in the Rocky Mtns.
Our weather here has been HOT. I think I would like to come visit you all now. Though, I don't think my midwife will approve a trip like that.
Ok, back to weird food stuff. I've hijacked this long enough. :D

I wish it was summer here... it is freezing cold!
Oh man I would give anything to be freezing. My last baby was a winter baby and I love my third trimester so much more, I acredit that to all the days I could cuddle under a quilt and drink anything hot. And if ever my internal heater got out of whack I would just stand out in the snow, I did that alot. Now I just can't cool off.
Mum in Luv... that is why I planned for my 3rd trimester to be in the cooler months. I am almost 7 months and I will be at my largest very soon and nice and cosy!!!
I was heavily pregnant with twins last time in summer but we had aircon so it wasn't that bad but I was always worried about them being overheated at night etc. This babe is going to be snug as a bug in a rug and I am looking forward to cuddly feeding times instead of icky sticky feeding times. We can cuddle in a blanket together during feeds. It will be soooo nice.
I wish it was summer here... it is freezing cold!
I wish it were winter here so my cravings wouldn't seem so weird!
you should see my lips and hands... my lips are all cracked and dry and red around them and my hands are cracked and bleeding! Really
I have to wear gloves to do anything ... wash dishes, bath Abby, clean anything...
And I can only use one type of soap to wash my hands. And I have to put Vaseline on them after I wash them everytime and at night before bed etc... which is pretty difficult since I then have to wear my gloves to bed (woollen ones).
And of course... I have to wear lip gloss.
Winter just dries my skin out so badly.

I hate summer too but Winter is just so horrible.. can't dry washing, wet and rainy and muddy, too cold to get up in the mornings, dry skin, etc....
My favourite times of year are Spring and Autumn.
The funny thing is that last time I was pregnant I was NEVER cold LOL Even in Autumn. This time I am freezing! My portable hot water bottle is not working!!! :(
