I started a thread on this a while back in the catch all section, if you want to take a look! I had some concerns about my ds, we haven't had an official diagnosis, but an OT at his school felt our son had some sensory issues.
From what I have heard talking with other moms that OT is great for their little ones, they feel like they are playing and they have a lot of fun!
I am glad your getting him the help he needs and I wish you all the best.

My daughter has severe SI disorder. What has helped us the most is and occupational therapist who has an SI certification. Not all OT's are capable of treating SI, so be sure to have a talk with who you choose to work with your son. Also, check out www.spdnetwork.com (it might be .org) I can't remember right now, but it's an extrememy helpful sight, also search unde AOTA, the amercian OT association. There is helpful information there also. Glad your son is mild, most SI challenges can be helped. You are not alone in what you are dealing with! HTH
Yes, you are not alone! We have an autistic child with sensory issues.
I agree about making sure your therapist is well qualified. The right person can make a huge difference!

it is so nice to know that others are going through some of the same things with their children. None of my family or friends have children with SID and they really don't understand why he behaves the way he does. my one sil actually told me that we do not disipline him the right way, and as parents we are failing him, that we are setting him up to fail at what ever he does.
we have a big family function this weekend and i know that he will have some difficulties. (there will be 10 grandkids there, 7 and under).
know that he is at the children's centre, and starting to get help, things are starting to get better. Knowing that alot of you understand what we are going through, helps so much and i am so grateful for the advice and support. thanks so much

When I read this, it made me so sad, I have had similar comments about my ds, 'oh he just needs a good spanking'!!!! It is a lot more than that and that is just a comment coming from someone who just does not understand. A great book, I have been recommended and starting reading myself is "The Out of Sync child' It may also be a good thing for you to get some info. for your family, so they too can understand your little one and enjoy him. But I know what you mean about the family gathering, my ds has a hard time with large groups and functions like that too! I would just make sure that you and dh work together and help each other out, if you feel like your ds has had too much, take him away for a little bit and give him a break and yourself too! Also don't be too hard on yourself either, you are doing your best and try not to worry about other people, I know it is hard but at the end of the day you have to do what is right for your son and your family and also God will give you the strngth. I am glad you are getting him OT! This is a great bunch of moms here and we are here for you anytime :)

My son has SID too and has been just recently diagnosed with high functioning autism. I think if others could be a fly on the wall during just one of my days raising my son they wouldn't be so quick to judge and say he needed a spanking. I understand what you are dealing with and if you ever need to pm me feel free. Take care and God bless.
