I was wondering how you ladies feel about night lights. Do you use them? Why or why not?

I was thinking about this last night when I turned the lights out and Landon was fussy until we turned a small light back on. Just curious about what ya'll think.

We use them, but we learned the hard way to have extras on hand. We had one go out and our DS literally could not sleep with out one and we had no others. Lamps and hall lights just would not do  That was one rough night that ended up with me sleeping with DS.

They now have led lights that are supposed to last 25 years and have shock protectors to keep little fingers sliding in the back. Thats what we have now. Keep baby proofing in mind when you pick what light to put in your littles ones room.

I have a touch lamp for my DD you can set it to a low light, she will not sleep without it as she thinks the monsters will get her. I do not know why but yep we have one.

We use one, but it is more for our use than for DD. I cannot see at night very well, and our bedroom is off our DD's room (our house is weird) so we have to walk through DD's room to go downstairs, and without the night light I would probably stumble and fall all over the place! DD on the other hand seems to sleep well with or without it!

Blessings,

we don't do night lights There *is* one downstairs just so folks can see their way on the stairs at night. but otherwise, we've never really used them. I read they're not good for your eyes. I forget what it was now, exactly. Just, that it wasn't good. But anywho..we've not had the need for them.

We used them and put them on timers so the kids fell asleep but never noticed when the light went out. ;) ~Kerri

I've heard it can affect your sleep. But both of my kids have used a night light at one time or another. We keep one in each of the bathrooms, too.

We keep a small night light lit in the bathroom & that is all. I prefer it dark & have made the kids sleep like that as well.

I use one so I can check on katherine easily. Usually there is enough moonlight in the rest of the house but her room is pretty dark. I don't want to flip on the regular light and blind her but I can't see without it, so a nightlight it is. She seems to sleep fine without one (She did for awhile when the bulb burnt out and we had to get a new bulb.) I also have one in the kitchen so I can get a drink easily at night. I get really thirsty. LOL

I never used night lights in the kids rooms because i didn't want them to get used to sleeping with one and then not being able to sleep without one.

Thanks for all your help. The only reason we have a light on now is the same as some of you... to be able to check on Landon. And I have the pg clumsiness now. Not once during my pg, but I'm horrible now. I'm shocked all my toes and fingers aren't broken. I think I might switch to a softer light and see if that will help. I don't want him to become dependent on it either.

I think those more 'glowy' kind are better for your eyes. Like um, what are they..blue flat screens? As opposed to the bulbs.
That's what we got several years ago when we were staying in MIL's basement and needed light to get up the stairs to the bathroom. That's what we continue to use downstairs.
They're very soft lights.

I'll have to go look this stuff up now. Funny, I had thought about this all not too long ago but kept forgetting to look it up, but now you've sparked me again.

When ours were babies we used them for the same reason most of you do; so that we could see when we'd go into the nursery. It made it easier to check up on baby. :D

Here's our variation on the nightlight. When I was preggers with each baby and decorating the nursery, I'd buy a simple lamp and decorate it around the nursery. Then, Justin would buy a dimmer and splice it into the cord. This only takes minutes... super easy. What I love about these lamps is that you can dim them as much or as little as you'd like, and the kids LOVE them. This one is Carissa's (I made it when I was preg with her). She's now 12 and still loves it and refuses to part with it.

Lamp dimmed down. It's hard to see how dim it will go in this pic because it's still light outside. It dims down to barely a glow.

I must say that you have a great manicure Joy! You would make a great hand model!

No nightlights here. My kids never seemed to care. When they were babies they loved the fisher price fish tank that played music and hung on the side of the crib. Sometimes if they woke up at night, that would lull them back to sleep after a feeding. My one daughter has a winnie the pooh that glowed when you sqeeze him, but she doesn't have to have it.

Tara- I heard the same thing a few years ago that night lights can be bad for eyes. Not sure why, and they haven't pulled them off the market so they must not be too bad.

Teehee! Thanks, kymommy! [hug]

As for the possibility of damaging the eyes... I remember hearing about that years ago, too. Didn't they say it was because of the potential for eye strain from trying to focus in the dark? I think that's what they said. This would probably depend on the child. If your child takes a long time falling asleep and will busy him/herself in the dark with toys or books before dozing, that may be more of a problem. Also, if the light is too bright, that could provide an environment conducive to bedtime play. If the light is barely a glow, then focusing on their surroundings is less of an option. [sleep]

Our nightlight has a pink bulb in it, so the glow is very light. I also put up a blanket at the end of DD's bed where the light is, so it' doesn't shine in her eyes. I do have to say that when the power went out last year, and it was pitch black in the room, my eyes never adjusted at all. Really made me glad we had a night light because I do think I literally have the worst night vision in the world.

I'm the same way, Amber. I can't see in the dark, either. I have a nightlight in my room, too, just so I don't break my neck getting into bed at night. Also, I really don't like waking up in the dark and not being able to focus on anything.

I have a nightlight in DD's room, but I use it for decorative purposes only. I don't use it when she's sleeping and so far, she doesn't need it.
