Hi all,
Just was curious, when did you start introducing solids to your baby?
What did you start on?
Do you also get RiceCereal for babies -> did you use breastmilk or formular with it?
Thanks.
My ds is large so my pediatrician had me start him on cereal at about 4 months. He loved it and he eats most fruits and veggies now! I started giving him a teaspoon of rice cereal at night and still bf only all day. Now I bf and he gets 3 meals a day of solids. Some people will say not to start solids until 6-12 months but I think you have to look at your child and make the decision that's best for you and your child. Good luck!
Thanks,
What concerns me, is that my pediatrician said i should start solids at his 3 months checkup. (cause he did not put on 2kg in 14weeks!) I feel it is too young. He is a happy baby, and sleeps through the night! (Although i do think my one will love solids - but that does not mean he is ready to...)
I bought a box of rice cereral, but want to try to wait as close to 6 months as possible.
The nurses at the breast feeding clinic told me my son is gaining weight, so we should wait till at least 4 or 4 1/2months. which i feel better about than 3 months!
Now my other concern is - the rice cereal box says to mix it with baby's milk. ie breast milk if that is what baby is drinking, else formular. Now i don't want to buy ANY formular for at least 6 months - if not longer. since i believe Mom's Milk is best! but i see you need like 100 and 200ml for a meal, how can one express so much! I have started expressing little bits in the morning, and freezing it - for later use, but it is so little...
Any suggestions / advice on this one?
Thanks.

I say do what you are comfortable with. If you don't think it's time to introduce solids...then don't! But if you feel okay about it and think your son will benefit...then start slowly and see how he reacts.
I'm not sure about the rice cereal thing. I had to use formula with my first, so the breastmilk versus formula issue never came to mind. Hmmm???? BF mommies Help please!!!
Good luck though! So glad he seems to be doing well otherwise!

My natropath recommends starting with mashed bananas or avocados. That is what she did with her kids. (I really have no idea, though... Just thought I would mention her advice since cereal seems to be an area of concern for you.)

I don't remember when we started rice cereal, probably 5 or 6 months. I used expressed breast milk with it.

I couldn't get Justice to eat the boxed cereal. We finally got him to eat the jarred kind mixed with applesauce. We actually didn't start cereals until 6 1/2 mos. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends starting solids at 6 mos. actually. It is really tough sometimes to get babies prior to 6 mos. to eat solids because of the tongue thrust reflex that babies have, basically they push whatever you feed them out with their tongue. Some are quicker than others to do this, but sometimes it takes awhile. Breastmilk really provides all your baby needs until 6 mos. at least. You do what you feel most comfortable with, but just remember you don't have to do anything but breastmilk if you want to.
Thank you ladies.
That is a bit reasuring.
I don't want to introduce solids too soon, but the ped thinks he needs more calories... and that did kind of get me concerned. the breast feeding clinic agrees with me - and recommends i wait till at least 4 1/2 months before starting. i won't mind waiting for longer - so at least i know he can get all the breast milk he can get. i mean, if i start solids and i cannot express enough milk for it, we will have to introduce formual as well - which i want to avoid.
I think he has heard this idea of solids, and sometimes tries to make me think he is not getting enough...
oh, i forgot how difficult it was to know if and when baby is getting enough!
