OK... so, near the end of your pg... how do you protect the bed in case your water breaks? I didn't put anything on last pregnancy because I didn't even think of it, but after my water broke and gushed everywhere in the hospital (sorry TMI), I was REALLY GLAD it didn't break in the bed.... because it would have ruined the mattress! (we have a foam mattress that CANNOT be cleaned if it gets wrecked like that.)

I don't want to sleep on plastic, is there something waterproof I can put on the bed... that will not make me really hot and sweaty? (it's summer after all)

I would love to know anyones suggestions as well. With Abby we had a plastic sheet that fit on the bed but it was really annoying bcuz it made a lot of noise everytime you got in the bed or rolled over. Dh hated it but that's all we had. We did put a normal sheet on top but it still felt weird to sleep on. Sorry I'm not much help as a plastic sheet was what I was gonna suggest.

Yeah, plastic sheets are terrible. I had to sleep on plastic on a bed once b/c my MIL had put it on a bed because the kids were sleeping on it, it was so horrible, all the heat was trapped and i was drenched with sweat when i woke up.

So another reason i am asking this is for Katherine when she starts potty training because NO WAY is my kid sleeping on plastic. as it is, we have plastic on her crib mattress, but we layer with like 5 layers of cotton comforters/blankets so that it "breathes" LOL...

We bought this thing that goes over your entire mattress and it's not really plastic, it's almost like....*thinks of how to explain it* it's smooth, almost fuzzy but not. (I'm probably making NO sense!) Anyway, we got it at Walmart...it's supposed to help with allergies too...it was just under $30...but it depends on the size that you get. It's really thin and you have to be REALLY careful when you put it on and take it off, because it tears really easily...but it's worth it even for having it on the bed once because it will save you having to buy a new mattress.

Afraid I won't be much help either. I have gotten plastic mattress protectors that you put the mattress in and zip it shut and then I have a mattress pad, sheets, etc. on top of it. This is what works for us. I had a plastic garbage bag type thing at one time and that this is terrible with the heat - waking up sweating. I have also found in the baby dept. waterproof pads for a crib. I have one in a twin size (not sure where we got it) and sometimes these work; sometimes they don't. It's white and smooth and I don't know how to explain it but you should see them in the baby dept. at a store. I had smaller ones that someone called lap pads. I also one time had a fuzzy top/rubber or plastic backed twin size thing that was waterproof - but the plastic melted in the dryer. They have disposable pads that are rectangular shape but those can be a bit noisy and move around too.

This may sound funny but after I gave birth and when my kids were potty training I was worried about the couch and the carpet getting ruined. My solution was sitting on those puppy training pads, they are small and easy to move around and not as uncomfortable as plain plastic. The kids could even carry them around when they moved! It worked great for us. They are the same thing they give you to lay on in the hospital now.

I found this:

You might try your local fabric store for waterproof fabric (lap pad style material), also.

For children they make waterproof mattress pads...I used one on my dd's bed when she was first potty training. I know what Chels was talking about...it is cloth, kinda fuzzy, definately more comfortable than plastic! We used that when I was pregnant and it lasted one night - it slept horrible! Surely they make something for larger beds with the same concept as the one I have for Gracie...

Ok I didn't even think about the bed...I was just worried about my clothes. I did hear this suggestion, and was planning on trying it during the day, but now I might durning the night. They suggested wearing depends when you are close to the end. I don't know how comfortable they are, especially at night but I think I might try them anyways.

[rofl] Ok, that totally made me crack up! Just the mental picture of me wearing depends when I am 9mnths preggers [rotfl] I never thought about depends. Actually, they don't sell them over here. But if you are a gusher when your waters break, I'm not so sure them puppies are gonna help much. When they broke my waters in the hospital, there was so much water and with such force that I think the depends would go flowing away with the flood

They had to break my water in the hospital, even though I was 10cm dialated by the time I got there....hmmm....hope it goes that way again so I don't have to worry about the mess.
My boss did mention last week that he wants to put down trash bags in my office...just in case :?

In our natural childbirth class last week, it was recommended to get a vinyl table cloth that has the soft side on the reverse side. Nurse said you can reuse when kiddies want to paint or play playdough!

We have a mattress pad/cover on our bed all of the time. I like to use one in case I leak when on my period. I also like to have one for when the girls are sick and need to sleep with me so I can keep a closer eye on them. Ours is like the one in the link below. It has cloth on the side that you sleep on and you can't even tell that it is there.

Here is a link to waterproof pads that are 18" x 18".

When we were expecting DD we went to a resale store and bought a really ugly very old sheet, and put one of those table cloths someone mentioned that is fuzzy on one side, then we put a sheet, then we put a dollar tree table cloth down, and then the ugly sheet on top of that. Wasn't very uncomfortable. Ended up we never needed it, my water broke as DD was coming out, but I was glad we had the protection.

Blessings,
Amber
