For various personal reasons, I am thinking about beginning to wean ds from b/f. He does not take a bottle but he can drink from a sippy cup (water only) and he loves to hold it. My question is, can I put formula in a sippy cup if I measure it out first? I don't want to start him on a bottle at this point. Do you think this will work? I don't see why it wouldn't but sometimes my eyes aren't completely open. I am going to start slowly, like replacing one feeding a day for a week and so on... any other suggestions would be great!

Well, you can put formula in a cup, but young babies do need to have something to suck on (whether it's the breast, bottle, pacifier, thumb, etc). It's a comfort , security, and soothing thing for many babies so I wouldn't go fully to the cup if I were going to stop b/f totally because of that strong need to suck. Sucking also develops the jaw muscles and such so I wouldn't want to hinder that either.....

Basically I'd only do the cup if it were going to be like 1-2 feedings a day. That's just me, but I'd want to make sure my baby's need to suck was being met, which it will be as long as you are still b/f.

There are sippy cups with the silicone "nipples" on them....they feel very much like a bottle nipple, but they aren't the same...I don't know if that would work for you all or not...but Maddy took quite well to them...(we are still nursing though).

You might check with your pediatrician before changing to a cup too early. Was there a reason not to try a bottle? I personally stuck with nursing.. and this was the toughest of three. last Jan through July - I had 5 bad breast infections, and wanted to quit with each painful one... but needed to nurse through the pain & then felt like whoo hoo I made it, and kept on nursing. Our son has been so healthy, and I am shocked to make it through almost two years. I will actually miss the close cuddle time when he turns 2. But it has been a blessing to be able to stick with it for all three children - and the oldest just turned 15!
I have been in prayerful tears many times, and thankful for the strength I received.
Your decision is what works best for your family. :)

usually say don't transition to a non nipple form until at least 10 months to a year....jaw development and security and the amount of air they take in in a sippy cup vs. a nipple that keeps continual fluid for digestion....I personally would go to a bottle and use that until a year and then transition to a cup.
I never breastfed, but used the bottle until switching to soft silicone sippy cup at 1 year (liked the Nuby brand) and then built to a hard sippy cup after that.

Well when the kiddos were weaning (themselves) they both hated sippy cups. They would however drink out of those ones that have the soft straws. This was cool since if I ever forgot their cups I needed to only find straws when we were out and about. Maybe that would work. Blessings to you that the transition goes smoothly. ~Kerri
