My 21 month old DD stuck her thumb in her mouth when I laid her down to sleep tonight. She was pretty much asleep when I laid her down, but her thumb went right in. This seems weird to me because she has never been a thumb sucker. She doesn't suck her thumb during the day either. She is teething (getting her eye teeth) and she has wanted to chew and/or suck on a pacifier, which she doesn't use anymore either. She is also nursing still and seems she would nurse all day if I let her.

Could this all be just from teething, or could it be more emotional from going through the death of her brother?

It doesn't bother me if she does suck it, just curious.

Blessings,
Amber

I think it could be a fluke, or it definitely could be an emotional thing. Your family's been coping with a lot! My DD, who will soon be 4, still sucks her thumb when she gets really upset or tired. Definitely a comfort thing.

I know there are people out there who are outraged (and many don't hesitate to come up to us in public!) :) about thumb-sucking, but I figure if that's the worst of my problems, I'm very blessed! :)

Three of my four have sucked their thumb from pretty much day one, and I notice, that they stick their thumbs in when they are looking for comfort... sometimes it's just because they are sleepy and want to suck but, a lot of times, I see them stick that thumb in when they are feeling a little... oh, I don't know... emotional? Kids have all kinds of things for comfort; blankies, teddies, pacifiers, bottles, sippy cups... my kids chose their thumbs. :) Maybe she just found her "pacifier". :)

Three of ours sucked their thumbs and one took a pacifier. We found that these were more easily comforted (actually able to comfort themselves) than their brother who was a no thumb/no pacifier baby. He did not like either.

I will say, though, that thumb sucking can be a bear of a habit to let go of. :?
