View Full Version : Baby Names
Katielady 05-31-2007, 02:25 PM When we first found out we were pregnant, we had a girl name all ready and picked out. Then we found out it was another boy!!! So, the talk began. I thought we had settled on Ashton James (although the only Ashton's other than celebrities I know are girls...I consented because I got my pick - James).
Now - in the midst of everything else, my husband comes to me last night and is talking to my belly (something he never does!) and calls the baby Cash. This isn't the first time he's mentioned that name, but I've always thought he was really just joking. Apparently, he wants to name our baby Cash.
Okay, here's my beef with this. I want our sons name to have significant meaning, not just be cool. And in every baby book, online program and anything else I can find - Cash means Conceited. Sorry hun, that alone kicks it out the door for me.
What I want is a name with meaning. Something that will examplify (sp) what I want for his life (service to God and obedience...something along those lines). So - I would like at least first or middle name to be a Bible name, but otherwise, just something not so "flashy" or "cool". I'm much more of a traditionalist myself. I can handle a little "flash" but not quite that much.
So here is what I have as far as Bible names that aren't already taken by one of his other sons or my cousins sons (these are just basic easily recognized Bible names):
James
Paul
Timothy
Andrew
Jonathon
Luke
(My first is Matthew Daniel so those are both out)
So - any others - I'll take strange names out of the Bible too!!!! I am just so ready to make this a final decision and stick with it, as he will be here in just a few more weeks and I don't want to call him John Doe.
Thanks!

I really like Gideon, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Elijah... etc. My DH doesn't want to name our kid anything weird. If we have a boy I am going to press for Jeremiah though because he was the weeping prophet and if ever there was a reason to weep for our nations (USA/Canada) it would be now :(
I have a friend who just named her son Simeon. I love it! How about Issac?
MommaBear 05-31-2007, 04:14 PM David Christopher? Or David James (since you like James)?
We have no idea what to name Jellybean either. So I can't be much help. Sorry. Blessings to you! ~Kerri
irishmum2boys 05-31-2007, 04:41 PM I really like Luke :) But I also like Josiah, Jonah, Asher, Malachi & Judah. I actually really love Bible names, but I am sure you figured that out since both my boys are old testament names!
stephwhiz 05-31-2007, 04:48 PM I really like Luke :) But I also like Josiah, Jonah, Asher, Malachi & Judah. I actually really love Bible names, but I am sure you figured that out since both my boys are old testament names!
I really like Luke too and also Asher!
savedbygrace 05-31-2007, 04:57 PM Eathan - firm, enduring, strong
Aaron-Mountaineer, mountain of strength, shining light
Benjamin-Son of my right hand
Elisha- God is my help.
Ezekiel -May God give strength.
Hosea -Salvation, help.
Israel -Prince of God.
Jadon- Thankful.
Joel -The Lord is God.
Josiah -Healed by God, supported by God.
Micah -Who is like God.
Nehemiah -Comforted by God.
Seth -Appointed, a substitute
Okay out of all the Bible names these were the ones I thought were decent.
The ones in blue are the names I think are really cool.
Katielady 05-31-2007, 05:00 PM Thanks girls!!! There are a lot of names there I hadn't thought of. I really like Seth too, Esther!
Keep them coming...and non Bible names if you have a combo you think would flow well. I'm making a list, and strange though it may seem, I'm going to pray about it before I make a final decision.
LadyLavender 05-31-2007, 06:13 PM Our kids have weird names :) so most of ours would be out for you, but here are a few that were on our boy list that were more normal. :)
Caleb
Josiah
Ezra
Gabriel
Gideon
Liam
Riley
As far as biblical, I really LOVE the biblical story of Caleb. He reminds me of you, Katie- he was proclaiming God's power and ability when everyone around him was being negative. :)
lvrofmusik 05-31-2007, 06:30 PM My son's name is Zephan. We took it from an Irish name book. St. Zephan was a saint in the 17th century I believe. It is also a shortened version of Zephaniah, out of the bible. If you google his name it comes up with two different origins. One being Celtic/Gaelic, the other Hebrew, which meaning is treasured by God.
We just thought it was a cool name at the time. Something different that no one had. Not many people have it that's for sure. My husband's ancestory is Irish, so that's why we picked the Irish book of names. At the time, we weren't walking with the Lord, but came to know that his name has a biblical reference also.
You can always take a longer name and shorten it, be creative.
Just my 2 cents. :) Good Luck!! I love naming my children, that's the funnest part of being pregnant besides feeling them move inside of you.
Cheri :)
Godzgirl 05-31-2007, 06:50 PM I like Ethan, Caleb, Josiah, and Nathan.
davidsmommy 05-31-2007, 10:30 PM David Christopher?~Kerri
LOL, picking a name is quite interesting... I like this one... wait, that's cause that's what my David's name is ;)
Interestingly enough, Matthew Daniel was on our list of potential names... Supermanslady has one of those ;)
Picking a 2nd boy's name has been difficult... We have narrowed to 9 combinations... maybe 4? :? Like you, we want a Bible connection with a worthy meaning. I TOTALLY get that.
kanaclark 06-01-2007, 08:14 AM While I'm thinking, why does he call him Cash? Is a Johnny Cash fan? Maybe if that's the case, you guess could compromise on Jonathan or John or something.
I was also thinking maybe give him Cash and you pick a first name. There really isn't much that sounds right with Cash as a first name, so maybe that would work, LOL
they're not Biblical, but what about:
Bradley?
Conner?
OOh, OOH, OOH, what about Andrew?
Andrew Cash F.
I like that. I'll start calling him Andy, now. LOL
Katielady 06-01-2007, 09:46 AM While I'm thinking, why does he call him Cash? Is a Johnny Cash fan? Maybe if that's the case, you guess could compromise on Jonathan or John or something.
OOh, OOH, OOH, what about Andrew?
Andrew Cash F.
Apparently some rap/hip hop artist recently named their kid Cash....thus his desire to "keep up with the joneses".
I actually suggested Andrew Cash or even Cash Andrew...but he didn't like that because he had a cellmate named Andrew when he was in jail (Long story). Wish I could though!
Thanks for all the suggestions! I love everything so far and now have a good list compiled to go over this weekend. Sort of hard since I was so use to calling the baby by what he had first picked out....oh well, this boy will know who he is....EVENTUALLY!!!!
Timmys mom 06-01-2007, 09:49 AM Hmm, most have been named, but I don't think I've seen Joshua on here. I love the story of Joshua in the Bible. I also Love Micah, Michael, Josiah, Caleb, and Ethan.
This is just a thought: IF you did deside to go with Cash you could look at it like Jacob who became Israel. Jacob, his given name means ussurper (?spelling) and when God reached into his life he became Israel, no longer a cheat and swindeler. Now obviously yours son's name would not change at re-birth but, his life would and his name would be a testament to what he ISN'T because of Christ. My parents named me Renee after my dad's ex-girl friend- totally weird reason to name someone something. I didn't grow up in a Christian home but, the name Renee along with my middle name Joy means born again delight. . .how cool is that? I have a friend who is not saved who named her daughter Patients- something she is not at all. I'm fully expecting that somehow God is going to reach this little girl and save her and make her patient to match her name. Maybe if you went with Cash and gave your son a significant middle name he could be a boy who grows up to know the Lord and NOT be a conceited man. Again just a thought. -ren
Katielady 06-01-2007, 12:03 PM Thanks Renee. I have been thinking that too. Names don't always direct our paths, but I would like his to have some signicance. Maybe conceited man of God... . Conceited in his love and faith in God wouldn't be so bad, huh????
Shmagu 06-01-2007, 12:44 PM We almost used Mathias as the middle name for our second son...
But, daddy wanted to incorporate his own middle name...
So now we have (1st son) Gareth Thomas, (2nd son) Gannon Christopher...so they each have biblical middles and unique firsts...
Cash Mathias sounds kind of hip and is meaningful ( GIft of God )
remember any name you give your child will have signifigance because it will be his.
Good luck.
LaDonna 06-01-2007, 03:55 PM We have always had a boys name picked out but we have been blessed with two very lively girls...
Matthew Samuel was our boys name
both are from the Bible but the Samuel was after fil
When we started talking about possibly adopting a little boy we like the idea of naming him after both of our dads (fil is still here but my dad passed away in 05)
we came up with Samuel Martin
Good luck it is so much fun picking out names
Maybe conceited man of God... . Conceited in his love and faith in God wouldn't be so bad, huh????
Tee Hee- oxymorone=) Oh, well nice thought anyway  -ren
GabrielsMommy 06-03-2007, 06:37 PM I wanted Joshua for my sons name, we ended up with Gabriel Joshua
Gabriel means man of God
Joshua means God is my salvation
I also love
Josiah
Micah
Michael
Jonah
Samuel
David
Daniel
Elijah
Jesse
I know all these names have already been listed. They are so beautiful though and their meanings make them even more beautiful.
4Angelz 06-03-2007, 09:18 PM Katie... just a thought really. Our 1st sons both have the same names. My 1st son's name is Mateo which is spanish for Matthew (your 1st son's name). My 2nd son's name is Ezequiel which is the spanish version of Ezekiel. So... if you wanna use that one, we can add it to our list of things in common [rofllol]
June 14th, my birthday - your anniversary
Mateo - Matthew
your dh - my dh
hehehe... just a thought!
Katielady 06-04-2007, 10:50 AM Katie... just a thought really.

Actually, Ezekiel is one I suggested originally that got shot down by DH...but as we see so often around here...our husbands can change their minds just as easily as they say we women can! We do have a lot in common though!!!!
Okay - from this weekend came my 3 choices and his 3 choices...but mind you, we have a few more weeks to go, so keep them coming if you see/hear/read one that you like.
My choices this round:
James Edward (combo of his and his fathers middle names)
Ethan Paul (just like both of those)
David Edgar (man after God's own heart...and my late grandfathers name)
All got a resounding NO from him.
His choices this round:
Cash Ezra
Cash Canaan
Cash Adam
Okay......so if I HAVE to go with Cash as a first name, at least he is getting the Bible theme going here for the middle names.
What do you girls think of his choices???? Honest Opinions here please!
I like Ethan Paul and James Edward! Those names are sooo great that they make all the Cash names sound hollow and silly (that's about as honest as it gets=). But, if you have to go with Cash, I like Cash Ezra the best. It makes me want to cry  thinking of you having to go with Cash after coming up with those other great names. Oh, well, focus ren. . .Cash could be ok. . .if you just forget that other names exist  -ren
davidsmommy 06-04-2007, 01:56 PM Oh my, sweetie... Like Ren, Ethan Paul and James Edward are wonderful choices! My choice for if he absolutely wants Cash is to go with the obvious and twist it to have a biblical connection, i.e. Jonathon Cash. (Silly me, I see where southernmom already suggested something like that...oh well) [hug]
4Angelz 06-04-2007, 02:42 PM I'm with Ren on the names. Gee... can't he just take Cash for a middle name :? It's really funky as a 1st name thing... I'll take Ezra Cash over Cash Ezra any day (shaking head).
Katielady 06-04-2007, 03:15 PM You wouldn't believe how adamant he is about Cash being the first name. [whatfurious] I am just sick of hearing it!!!! Of course, after all we've been through over the last few months, if I lost my marriage over a kids name....well, I'd feel pretty foolish!
So - I am keeping up my ideas on names and just praying like crazy that he'll back down on the whole Cash thing in the next few weeks! Pray with me!!!
savedbygrace 06-04-2007, 05:26 PM Okay since you said honest, i'm gonna be honest.
I may be the only one, but the more you mention Cash as a first name, I like it. It does have a cool factor. Yup, I like it. But I also like Ethan Paul. Ummmm..... how about Cash Adam or Cash Benjamin, Cash Daniel, Cash Ezekeil, Cash Isaiah, Cash Matthew, Cash James, Cash Nathaniel, Cash Thomas,
I think Cash Matthew or Cash Nathaniel are my favorites.
But Cash was one of the most popular names in 2006.
I kinda like Cash too! Saying that, I wouldn't name my kid that, but I do like it. I was actually gonna suggest Cash Thomas but Esther beat me to it. Though if it were me, I would tell dh that I would accept Cash as a middle name. That way it's a compromise and you both win :D But that's just me, I'm pretty stubborn
Tammyn4As 06-04-2007, 08:55 PM Hi,
My husband likes Bible names too. With our last (#4) I wanted something a little different. I liked Aidan Conner. He wasn't to sure. I found the name Aden in the Bible so that helped. Then he was reading our baby names book and asked me about Aidan Christopher. He had read Aidan means firey and Christopher means warrior for Christ. So thats what we went with. He is indeed firey and I pray the other part holds true too!( He is only 16 months old right now)
Tammy
I liked Cash Adam too. I will pray for a name combo that you can be comphy with. *smooches* -ren
myjoyoverflows 06-05-2007, 09:46 PM He's not even willing to compromise and have Cash be the middle name?
harmony5 06-05-2007, 10:46 PM One of my oldest ds's friend's names is Cash (Short for Cashus). I personally think it is a "cool" name. My problem with names has always been something that will suit the person from the time they are a baby until they are grown. KWIM? Can you imagine calling your baby Cash, as a toddler, a young child, a teenager, a man? I hope that makes sense. My dh named our last baby Tanner. I wanted to name him Waylon but I let dh choose. He did good as I believe Tanner got his right name.
Look on the bright side though, at least he doesn't want something way off the wall. I was looking through a high school yearbook the other day and came across Budweiser Miller. NO LIE! I say, take Cash and run with it before he comes up with something really wacky! LOL!
Lori :D
Katielady 06-06-2007, 09:38 AM I have to be completely honest with you. Cash isn't too bad! I actually think it's a cool name ....for someone else's kid  . Well, honestly, I wouldn't have such a hard time with it, if it weren't for the fact that EVERYONE around me has "poopooed" every name we've suggested, especially this one!
My coworkers and friends think it's AWFUL that he would want to name his child something like that and think I'm stupid for even considering it. His friends are sort of half and half on it. Some love it, some like it, some think it's crazy and wouldn't do it. But the biggie....my family! Ok, so we don't get along anyway right now...but I hate the thought of them making fun of my sons name the rest of his life like they have done my stepkids. (Cody, Tanner, Megan, Braiden and Hayden). I think all of my stepchildrens names are unique and fit them perfectly...but the comments from my parents about the youngest two rhyming....oyvay!
But here's what I have concluded...if this childs name is to be Cash, God will give me peace about it. If not, then he will change my husbands mind. So - there!!! It will be Cash ? since we still aren't sure on the middle name.
And Chels - at this point, there is no compromising with him on this one issue! He's done so great on all the other "bigger" issues lately, this is one I think I will let go of. "Choose your battles wisely" KWIM???
Anyway, keep the suggestions coming if you think of more. I've loves all of the suggestions!
4Angelz 06-06-2007, 08:59 PM Oooo Katie! This is why dh and I never told the name that we picked before the child was born and the name given. People are a lot more likely to keep their tongue in cheek once the name's already given. And it eliminated all of the pressure that we felt from people bad mouthing our choices!
TriciaT 06-08-2007, 12:15 PM My dh and I are keeping names a secret too. I guess his family always does that. I had never heard of it before, but I'm glad we are doing that.
HMMM... Middle names are tough aren't they? Of the one's mentioned, I like Cash Thomas the best. If you went with Cashuis and just called him Cash, then I like Cashius James.
