Should I go ahead and start taking prenatal pills since we are trying to concieve? I figured that would be wise since I don't know the exact time I will get pregnant.

My doctor always said to start prenatals immediatly when starting to try and then continue all the way until done nursing.....if you don't do the prenatals...at least add an extra folic acid pill and make sure you have a good multi-vitamin with Vit C, Vit B's, iron, and Vit D.....just easiest usually to do the prenatal because it has it all in one, folic acid included! Good luck!

Yeah, I went ahead and went to Walgreens and got some over the counter prenatal, plus a folic acid vitamin. I know when I am pregnant, I will be on prescription prenatal, but this will work for now.
And actually, if you were to ask your doctor, you would probably get the okay to just take the over the counter kind. I tried ALL the different prescription brands and they all made me SO sick to my stomach! The only kind I could take was the over the counter from Walmart. To be quite honest with you, I didn't take prenatals for three of my four pregnancies, and have had perfectly healthy happy babies and VERY uneventful pregnancies... but, I HIGHLY recommend taking them... they just made me more nauseous than I was already and I couldn't take it.
All I'm trying to say is, don't feel like a scum bag if you cannot take them once you become pregnant! I got such smack talk from so many doctors and then finally my midwife told me to not worry about it... I LOVED HER!!! She said that as long as I ate well, and took care of myself that I would more than likely be fine and have a healthy happy baby... she was right. HA. :)

I would take prenatals now if TTC. I think most prenatals have folic acid in them so I am not sure if you need a 2nd folic acid pill on top of that, maybe ask your dr?
If prenatals make you sick once you are pregnant, it is usually because of the high iron content - you can ask your doctor for a low iron prenatal or go to GNC - GNC makes a prenatal vitamin in it with no iron at all. It also helps to take the prenatal at night - if you have morning sickness you never want to take anything early in the day.

I was the same way. I took prenatals for the first 3-4 months of my pregnancy and then they started making me feel super sick to my stomach...so the doctor told me to take 2 of the little flintstone chewable things....hehe, TOTALLY brought me back to being a kid...but anyway, I was told that the flintstone things were just as good as the kind that they gave me through a prescription... anyway, I'd start taking something now....if you are indeed trying to conceive!

Me too myjoyoverflows, I was told by my doc to take two of the flintstone chewables a day as well. I started taking prenatals when we started trying. To build up my folic acid level. Then after I got pregnant the over the counter ones made me sick and the prescription ones did as well. So he rec. the flintstones and I did real well with those...I was able to keep them down longer.

I use the Rainbow Light Prenatals. I get them at Whole Foods, they have this red leaf raspberry in them. It is supposed to help strengthen your uterus and prevent miscarriages(I have had two). My dh and I have been praying for a miracle since Jan 07.

Yeah, it is a good idea to take the prenatal now. So that way you are taking folic acid and the other vitamins that the baby will need when you are preggo.

Thanks. I went to Walgreens and got some over the counter ones. Last time I didn't find out I was pregnant till I was 8 weeks (we were not trying) and I want to get a heads up on it this time.
