View Full Version : fighting bath time?
does anyone elses kid fight you at bath time? My 3yr old dd hates washing her hair so she throws a fit when its bath time. I've tried different ways for washing her hair and nothing works. She likes playing in the water so sometimes i just let her play in the tub and soak i figure well if i have to skip the hair wash today at least she's half clean..lol. I'm begining to think its the age or she's just stubborn

Yeah.. we just talked about this. Brooke fights baths too. Yesterday she cried that her booboos hurt if she got them wet and refused to sit down. She has scrapes from playing in the yard.. I know it does probably sting a bit at first so I bathed her standing up rather then fighting her to sit down. Even when she has no "booboos" she still fights me. Its got to be the age.. she used to love baths!

my dd is 2 and sometimes she fights it. I think that they know it means bed time is coming. if you bathe her right before bed, try bumping it up a little earlier. Or have you bought one of those buckets that form to their heads? I got one at toys r us and it works pretty good. she still hasn't figured out to keep her head up long enough to keep all the water out of her eyes. I use a dry washcloth to catch the rest. Sometimes I give her a popsicle while in the tub to distract her while I wash and scrub! I get sugar free since it's usually close to bedtime. hope it gets better and you find something that works.

Abby loves her baths, but when I wash her hair and water drips into her eye she freaks out!! So I went to walmart and in the craft section they had these foam visor hats and now I use that, so she doesn't freak out as bad.

Ditto that I have a foam visor hat that I got form the baby section in a shop in town. Sinead loves having her baths but because of a bad incident when she was little she hates water in her face. The thing that I do to take her mind off it is sing.
The wise old man built his house upon the rock........... I don't know if you've heard of it but there is a bit where the rain comes down and the floods go woosh and this is the part when I put water on her her. I also say that a naughty birdy has doen its poo on her head whenI put the soap on, then I say quick quick wash it out wash it out.

Until you get the visor, you could always just put a towel there to sheild her eyes while rinsing.

Our kiddos love baths but DISLIKEd getting their hair washed d/t the water in the eyes. Finally Mommy got smart  and now I keep a dry rag nearby so as soon as I rinse their hair I dry their eyes. Ah ha! No more tears! Good luck! She'll probably outgrow it though. I just think, like all kids, the water streamin down her face may freak her out. ~Kerri

For three months we went through a bathtime fight...when our son was just over 2...it wasn't just getting his hair washed, it was the entire thing. Then one night, my husband got in the tub to "play" and our son watched and saw him having fun and got in and we have been in bath heaven ever since.
Thank you everyone for the great advice :D I will have to try the visor. i do keep a hand towel handy for her to cover her eyes it just doesn't work for her :? I also try to sing with her. hopefully she will grow out of it soon  again thank you for all the advice :D

This sounds crazy but my 2yo who also hates to have the water poured over his had from a cup, loves showers. He actually now takes them by himself while I watch through the glass door and reach in occasionaly to do some scrubbing. We have a bath time basket ball hoop that he plays with while he is in there. To me it makes no sense that shower water doesn't bother but bath water does but aah .... that the life of a toddler.

good ol candy worked here  yes shock I know! Gummy bears actually
when dd was 3 she freaked out to with water drips in her eyes.....SO she got one gummy for the taste (get her really motivated) and one at the end IF she didn't cry. At the same time we did give her a towel and kept explaing the whole..."if you'd just look up....." bit! :?
it passed pretty quickly though!
OK you can all sick suppernany on me now HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

PS DS 21 months LETS US DUMP THE BUCKET OVER HIS HEAD AND LAUGHS!!!!!
My dd also USED TO hate washing hair. (even though i never washed hair everyday..) but once she learnt to swim with her face in the water, she got over the issue of water in her face and loved washing her hair.
I would let her "practice" swimming and blowing bubbles in the bath.
Things got alot easier after that.
Except, sometimes, she does not think she needs to bath every day. even though she enjoys playing in the water.
Lately she has discovered the shower. Now if your child is old enough to experiment with "playing in the rain" or rather "rain room" maybe that would help with the washing of hair.

I think its probably an age thing. My 2 year old loved his baths (still loves playing in the water), then all of a sudden he HATED having his hair washed. My cousin said all 7 of her kids did the same thing about the same age, but they outgrew it. Hopefully mine will soon because I'm afraid someone will think I'm torturing him from all the screaming when his hair gets washed.

LOL i remember thinking our next door neighbour might call the welfare ... but yes, they do out grow it evenyually. I have not met many adults that screem blue murder for bathing & washing hair.
:)
All the best.

Every.single.one of my children have gone through this.
The visor dealy helps, but I still have issues with mine. Some more so than others. My 5.5 yr old still gets goofy about it all. He's also the one that stands in the shower then gets wet via a small cup
I, too, have tried the various positions/methods of getting the 3yr olds hair wet. It seems the visor is our best route. I remind her to look up. I put my hand on her forehead to keep her head tilted back. If she feels the water headed toward her face, she flinches, head down and water gushes on her face. So, with my hand on her forehead, it usually helps that. I just keep reminding her to look up. We find a spot on the ceiling or I have her look at a shampoo bottle up on the window sill (we have glass block window along the top of that wall, so, it's really up there that she has to look).
Then, last time we did something and it seemed to work really well. I don't know if it was a freak accident or what LOL But, I'm willing to try it again just to test this theory.
I gave her her toothbrush so she could brush her teeth while I washed her hair. She wore the visor as usual. Tilted her head back as usual. All that same ole stuff we had been doing. But she was distracted by the toothbrushing just enough that she just kept her head back and never flinched :)
Oh, we've also tried the singing and howling tricks with all the kids. Neither of those worked a lick with this child LOL The howling helped the boys, but not this girl. nuh uh, no way haha
I'd try the toothbrush trick, yep, gonna try that again here.
