Ds has a bad diaper rash and nothing seems to completely clear it up! I've tried vaseline, powder, and diaper rash cream. The rash is on his private, his sack, and his butt. The poor little guy! Anyone have any good solutions?! I don't want him to be in pain!

A couple of things to try, naked time is always great, although hard to do with the boys! And tea!

Brew up a big bowl of black tea. Use four or five tea bags and let it steep til it's nice and dark. Then you can do two things, put his bum right in it, or soak old facecloths in it and put those right in his diaper. You're going to want to throw the cloths out after you use them probably, so don't use anything good!

I doubted this one, but it totally worked for those tough to get rid of diaper rashes.

Oh, another thing is Nilstat. It's an OTC antifungal, and it works great if it's a yeast infection (that looks kind of like little red or white spots, and sometimes they bleed.)

Hope that helps!

Being naked helped my ds out alot when he had bad diaper rash. He would get the rash on his little private area and butt too and he would scream when I would change him, it was just awful. I used to give him a nice long warm bath and then dry him good and let him go naked for a little while. It always helped him a lot to do that and then I would soak him down in Desitin everytime I changed him. Good luck! Stephanie

Eating yogurt everyday really seemed to help my ds keep diaper rash away. Anytime we went a couple of days without eating any I would notice the diaper rash beginning to come around.

That's right about yogurt. My children's peditrician said that yogurt helps that and also to eat yogurt anytime they are on antibotics because it will help prevent a yeast infection. Stephanie

Well, it's not a yeast infection (can little boys get yeast infections? We don't have many boy babies in my family that live around here so I don't know...moms with boy babies please help with this question!) b/c I had my mom check (she knows what to look for) and she said it's just a plain diaper rash. It's so terrible! I hate it when my kids are in pain! I would rather take it myself than have them suffer!

I gave him a warm bath and let him soak a little. I put petroleum jelly and baby oil (baby oil first). Any other suggestions?

Jamma, the tea thing sounds good! He's asleep now but maybe I'll try that later if it doean't clear up.

I just feel so bad for him! [crwy]

it really sounds like your baby has a yeast infection. I know it's weird, but boys get them too. my ped recommended the Clotrimazole yeast infection cream for my son when he had that right after he was born. he also told me you can tell the difference between yeast infection and regular diaper rash because with the yeast infection there will be little bumps. poor baby, i hope that helps.

Yup. My son got yeast infections all the time. Hits boys just as easily!

Yep, I've got 2 boys, and they can get yeast infections in the nappy area. All that yeast needs is a warm, dark, moist place to grow :P

Cornstarch is really, really good for nappy rash too. Just sprinkle it liberally over his nappy area, it keeps them sooo dry!

my son gets diaper rash so bad when teething that just to touch him makes him bleed! The doc can call in a 2.5% coritsone and aquafore blended cream...it's MAGIC! Works soooo welll!! Also, the best diaper rash creams out there that you can find at Walmart or Super Target in US is Dr. Smith's or Baby Boudreaux's ...they're super thick and create a lasting barrier that is still present at the next diaper change a couple hours later! ALl the others absorb really fast!
Good luck!

My older ds got diaper rash when he was young. My great-aunt finally told me that it was a yeast infection. We used OTC yeast infection cream and it seemed to clear it right up. Also, we let him go naked when it was warm enough and the air helped too. My youngest ds doesn't seem to get them as bad, but I would definately recommend Baby Boudreaux's Butt Paste or also Aveeno makes a really good diaper rash ointment. I have used both and like either. Probably the Butt Paste a little better, it is thicker and it wipes off real easy w/wipes or soap & water.

I know it sounds strange that boys can get yeast infections, I thought my great-aunt was crazy! :? But they can. Just needs the right environment to grow and there you have an infection  Hope your little guy gets to feeling better, keep us posted on his progress!

I've actually heard of more boys having yeast infections then girls. Has he had any antibiotics recently? Antibiotics attack good bacteria, too, making it easier for infections to happen. Yeast likes warm and moist areas and doesn't like yogurt and air. I've read not to use clotrimazole on men? I dunno. When I had the breast yeast infection dr gave me nystatin cream and dd nystatin drops (incase I gave the infection to her by bfeeding).

yup, my middle son has had a few yeast infections. I would take him to the ped if you can. They can give you a script for Nystatin. If not, then maybe food allergies?

ITA about the yogurt and naked time!!!

Amolin? Do you have that in the US? You can only use it if the skin isn't open anywhere though.

Pure cornstarch powder?

Zinc?

Lots of air time!

HTH

I found that Abby didn't really get diaper rash except when she was teething.

So sorry to hear about your baby Breanna. :( I hope he feels better soon.

Thanks so much! Hey Renee, what's HTH? Remember I'm computer illiterate! :D

I put some over-the-counter yeast infection cream (I hope it's ok since he's so little) b/c the rash didn't go away. If it still doesn't go away and I've tried everything I think I'll do Jamma's tea suggestion.

It could be a yeast infection since it hasn't barely cleared even with the diaper rash cream. There aren't any real bumps but I finally got really desperate! Hopefully this will help!

Hey there!

I saw yeast infection mentioned and a cream called Nystatin works really well (NI-STAT-EN) My grandma is a derm nurse and when Mikey was a baby my sister brought it over and it worked soooo well- it works too for those little rashes chubby babies get in their necks or armpits or rolls-

If you cannot get Nystatin another thing that always worked for my babies was to shine a light on the rash but not too hot, you know? Like get small desk lamp of something and try to shine the bulb on the rash-

I can't believe I am talking about this in past tense- I never thought I'd see the day I was telling someone what I used to do... I need a moment... [whatthink] :)

Sorry! HTH = Hope that helps. You know I do it just to confuse you  No, I'm just kidding. :D

I agree with the yeast infection. In fact I was told that all diaper rashes are actually yeast infections of various degrees. I was told to try Monistat and that worked. My mom also told me to use a wipe that was coated with vaseline to wipe him if he needed it. I never tried it, didn't sound like it would work but who knows.

When DD was small (before she could walk) I would lay a towel in the little portable bath tub and prop her up in it and let her watch TV and air out (naked)...letting it air out really seems to help! I hope it clears up I hate diaper rashes!! Also, I lay a cloth diaper under her on the changing table so I can pat her dry after I wipe. If he wont let you rub the cream on him just put it directly on the diaper and push it against him a little it should work just as well..although girls are flat so it might be harder with boys.

OH! Another thought, if you use disposable wipes, rinse them out in water before changing him. The chemicals in the wipes can irritate the rash.

Yeah, I've been using wet, warm, washcloth after seeing him in pain from the wipes! Poor little guy!

Juliarose, can you get that stuff at WalMart or do you need a perscription?

Renee, I know you're just trying to trip me up! :P J/K!

Breanne, DD has some of the Nystian (SP) and its a perscription

Here, you have to ask for Nystatin at the pharmacy. It's dirt cheap though! No prescription needed! (oh, the ointment works better than the cream, although it's messier...)

I don't know if Nystatin is OTC. We got the RX. I actually called my ped, explain the situation and asked for a script for a possible yeast infection. Dr. wrote it out w/o seeing dd. It's probably different for your situation.

Well, I finally took Isaac to the doctor (he had been having diareah and I realized that that was what was causing the rash and the rash was still there after about 3 days or so). Apparently it's his formula that is causing the diareah, so he has to go on soy formula for 2-3 days and then he can go back to his regular formula. The doc gave me a sample of diaper rash cream that was sent to her and that other mothers she has given it to has liked and she told me Desityn is the best cream since it doesn't wash off if the baby poops or pees.

So, his rash is clearing up!!!! Praise God! Thanks everyone for your support and advice!

Depending on how long he has had it you probably really should go to the doctor... especially if it becomes open and bleeding...

But.... Ds had a really bad diaper rash within days of being born... it was a bulls eye around his little bum because he has a milk protein intolerance. So it was causing skin breakdown every time he would poop... which was about 24 times a day (no exaggeration) because of the allergy.

So what I did was use vaseline as a barrier so that when the poop would come out it wouldn't stick to his bum and make the rash worse. It worked.

I used to be a nurse in a pediatrician's office... I highly recommend going in if he has had it for an extended period of time....(I am not the kind to run into the doctor for every little thing!!) But you need to make sure that some of those Over the counter yeast creams are okay to use on a young baby.

Hope he feels better soon!

I used a lot of vasaline in the beginning, too. Everytime I thought her bum was a little red I'd dab a little on just in case.
So glad to hear things are getting better!

Thanks! I have now committed myself to using at least Vaseline almost everytime! Helps keep the rash away!

A woman at my church said her son had been having the same probs and it was a virus in his intestine that was fixed after she gave him jello water. Apparently there is a chemical in jello water that heals them! So even though Isaac's rash is pretty much gone (he's jut red now) he still has green poop, so I gave him some jello water. Guess we'll see if it worked!

Vaseline is great! I use it on my hands in Winter because they dry out so bad they get cracked and bleed and then itch. UGH I've been told it's dermatitis but I think it's just a combination of the cold weather and the soaps I use. I wash my hands a lot. I can use any soap in summer, autumn and spring. But in Winter I can only use Simple soap and have to wear gloves to clean anything and do dishes. I wore gloves to bed last night after I put the vaseline on and it's amazing how much they have healed and feel so much better just overnight!

I'm a bit late coming to this conversation, but when dd was little she went through a period of bad rashes. I finally discovered it was because she wasn't getting enough water and her pee was too strong on her skin...

Anyways, I found this great product at my Walmart that worked wonders. It's in a spray bottle and it's active ingredient is: Dimethicone 1%

here's a link to a pic ...

http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100352&navAction=jump&navCount=4&id=prod389615

She would cry when I put it on her, but I can only assume it was cold, because it didn't hurt when I sprayed it on my hand... but her rash would be gone within a day of using that stuff. I've had several friends who's babies have had bad rashes, too, and they are converts to RashMist, too...

We tried Vaseline at first too and my dd was getting rashes, so we tried another cream and still more rashes and then we tried just using baby powder. Well, the rashes went away. We have stuck by it ever since.

05-18-2006, 08:17 PM
I think sometimes it's teething and that really gives bad diaper rash. And nothing seems to help it. You just have to wait for it to go away. With Abby that would only last two or three days and then she'd be fine again. I don't know....

05-19-2006, 02:11 AM
ohhhh yes my son had this too, it is awful!

We did cornflour and nappy off time - he'd lay on a towel with just a shirt on - it cleared up. I always had to explain to anyone around "I do change him, he's just a tender butt"

We tried all kinds of medicated this and that, but my Mum who has worked with children for 17 years said nurses cornflour from the supermarket is the BEST thing - it has no like potential ingrediance that may irritate, it is just cornflour... y'know?

My sister also advised me to make sure I dry between his sack and his penis (underneath) because that area there is prone to rashing if left damp ......

So glad he is better! Didn't realize that I posted that you should show the doctor after you already had! Sorry!

Glad he is better though!
