Hello ladies,
I have been abscent for awhile tending to my two little ones. I am taking Titus to the doctor tomorrow thankfully for his one month checkup and am concerned about him possibly having reflux. I wanted to get your opinions on the situation. First off, this all started on Friday night. He began vomiting like spitting up after a few feedings, now it is after every feeding, and it is a good deal of spit up too. He has coughing and congestion, clear to white snot. The only thing that it possibly could be is he is congested from a cold and is having spit up due to the virus. Our whole family, myself, my DH, and my 20 mos. old have had a bad strain of a cold and he could have caught it. I really hope it is not reflux and it will pass soon. My poor sweet baby seems so uncomfortable and irritable. And I do my best to catch the spit up, but end up usually having to change mine and his clothing, so it is just a messy and stressful situation.

It sounds more like complications from the cold than reflux to me. If he has a lot of drainage, that thick mucus can make it hard for him to swallow his milk properly, and then his tummy may be upset due to the mucus and not want to digest the milk either.
Of course check with the doctor first and foremost, but my first instinct is that he has a touch of the cold that has been in your household and that is causing the extra spitup and vomitting.

Totally agree with supermanslady....mine get that way with a lot of congestion because it upsets the tummy and the formula/breastmilk can be hard on their tummys with the virus......If it was reflux, it doesn't usually come on that "suddenly" and you would have normally had a lot of problems before now with constant spit up, crying while eating, fussy to take nipple or bottle, gassy crying that isn't consolable....

Emily, is it a lot, a lot of spit up? More like projectile vomit? I had babies with acid relux and they spit up often, but it wasn't like they were losing their whole feeding. If it seems more like a huge vomit after eating, I'd call your doctor and ask about Pyloric Stenosis. Kana ( :D ) and I have both had babies with this and acid reflux. For my babies, the reflux started right away, while the Pyloric Stenosis started at around a month and got worse. PS is where the Pyloris valve at the bottom of the stomach closes off so that milk cannot drain well into the intestines, causing the tummy to become over full, resulting in vomiting.
I hope it's just that your baby isn't feeling well. If you think it could be PS and baby gets worse, call your doctor right away and ask about it. It's considered a life threatening emergency but it can be fixed easily. :D

I was thinking the same thing! To add to what Joy asked, how are his bowel movements? Are the decreasing while the vomiting is increasing?
Also, next time he eats, about ten minutes or so afterward, watch his tummy, if you see a bubble rolling across the bottom of his tummy, it is the pyloric stenosis. It may look like an olive, a grape, you get the idea, it will be round, but oblong as well. it will be just below his belly button. If you see this, PLEASE get him to the doctor. If they don't listen, demand an ultra sound. The surgery is very minor, but if not done can result in death. Most babies become emaciated before a dx of Pyloric Stenosis, but with Patrick, my little guy, I noticed the problems just as he had lost from 8 pounds to 6 pounds. The nurses even commented that most babies they see have lost down to 4 pounds or less before they're sent for surgery.
If I saw the "olive" I would much rather pay the high cost of the ultrasound and find out my worrisome mind was seeing things rather than see my baby go through the pain until the doctor finally figured it out.
If you don't see the "olive", and are nursing, try looking at what you may have been eating over the past few days/weeks that you didn't in the past. More sugar, white flour, wheat, eggs, milk, caffeine, ANYTHING different in a nursing mom's diet will result in changes in the baby's reaction to the milk.
But definitely watch for the little olive even if his bowel movements haven't decreased yet. Patrick didn't stop poo-ing until just before surgery, so you can't always go by that.
*Not trying to scare you, just wanted to share with you more info so that you'd know what to look for*
Prayers for little Titus

I'm new here, but my son had HORRIBLE reflux when he was a bit younger. With him, it started right away and was obvious from a pretty young age that there was something wrong. To me it really sounds like your little one is dealing with a cold, and not reflux. However, if you have any questions, you should definitely get him check out. Its always better to be safe than sorry. :D GL and I hope your little one gets feeling better VERY soon!
