Hi,
When I b/f my daughter I remember the diapers had an almost pleasant "sweet" smell. and understood that breast fed babies diapers smell better than formular fed babies.

My my son who has ONLY had breast milk - well, his nappies smell terrible! I was expecting that breastmilk "sweet" smell of the nappy.

Does breast milk babies not ALL have better smelling nappies?
Will I be in for a NASTY surprise when he is off my milk? or could there be something else that makes it smell bad?

Thanks for the advice.

could it perhaps be related to something in YOUR diet?
my only thoughts
I'm no baby poo expert hehe

Ditto... this is what I was thinking. It may be related to your diet... are eating lots of acidic foods? or Gassy foods? It *may* be causing it. Good luck! :) All four of mine have had the sweet smelling diapers, like you're talking about, while I breastfed them for the first six months, then as I introduced other things (like juice or what have you) it started to change to something more fowl.... yucky... :)

cannot think of any...
i dont eat citrus. maybe oxxasional lemon in marinade
i do eat a bit of tomato, but not in moderate amounts.
my diet should be healthier than when i last breast fed 7 years ago as we have improved our diet (we were at a dietician a few years ago)

as for gassy, we hardly have any gassy drinks in the house.
we don't eat much fried stuff. so i cannot think what if there is anything in my diet it could be.
thats why i was wondering if it could be anything in his tummy (somehow)
funny, he has bad reflux, and i do sometimes get that "sweet" smell around his "face" - well, a sweet smell that reminds me of what that b/f poop smelt like.
Guess i should bring it up with the doc or at the breast feeding clinic next time i go.
Thanks.
(when i find out, i will let you know - just so we could become a little bit more wiser - if anyone else one day may have a similar occurance..

Yes, thank you, please DO keep us posted! My second daughter had HORRIBLE reflux and was extremely fussy, I gave up nursing at six months and put her on soy formula... she got MUCH better, over night, but I wish I would have stuck with it and breastfed her. Let us know how it turns out!!

Hi JRBL
do you think the reflux may have something to do with it?

Maybe... who knows! I don't really remember clearly her diaper smell but her entire infancy was just one big nightmare because of her reflux and fussiness. I hope that this reflux with your baby can be remedied, by medicine or better yet, prayer!

Totally NOT any expert by any means, but I know that my Dh's breath was horrible when he was on particular meds that gave him severe reflux/acid indigestion. His breath literally could smell like the foulest poo you have ever come across. He was not breastfed at the time though...LOL not at 35!
Having said that, I am sure having extra acid in his little tummy can really do a number on his digestive cycle. I would bring it up with his doc for sure. They have wonderful meds and I am sure very natural things that can help your little guy.
This is a very minor help, but have YOU tried drinking LOTS of peppermint tea? It may sooth his tummy just a tiny bit.

I am curious what your doc and/or lactation consultant says.

I do have to laugh...because someone asked about gassiness, and it's probably a cultural thing, but you said something about gassy drinks......is that what you call carbonated sodas/drinks? I know some places say windy for the type of gas that was being referred to. You know, the kind that is passed from the backside?
I do love learning how people use different words! Good to know how you say this incase we come into A LOT of money and DH drags me to SA to swim with the sharks..... that man!!

Oh, and just FYI...dh's stomach thing is MUCH better now...I am sure there would not have been a Noah if his breath stayed that foul...haahaa! Poor guy!

Hi all,
I have to report back...
I think the nappie is smelling better. :)
I have avoided tomato, and any lemon juices (used in marinades)
and the nappies are not so stinky anymore.
I won't say it is AS sweet smelling as i remember my daughters... but that was 7 years ago.

Anyway,
As for gassy / carbonaided drinks (like coke & pepsi) we don't drink much so that should not have made a difference.

Reflux, well, still there - not as bad. I try not to "over fill" him. that helps.
just hard to say when he HAS had enough...
and i found something at the pharmancy and i give him that when he crys for no obvious reason ... seems to work !

Thanks for everyone's input.
