View Full Version : cow's milk
I'm not even sure if this is the right place for this bcuz I'm not sure if dd is still considered a baby or if she's a toddler now :? Anyway, she weaned from Breastfeeding about a month ago, so I've been *trying* to give her cow's milk. However, she'll take a few sips and then refuses it. I'm so worried that she's not getting enough calcium. She gets things like yogurt and cheese etc. during the day, but is that enough calcium? I've tried giving it to her cold and warm, and she just doesn't want it. Anyone have any suggestions or advice?

okay, this sounds bad to some, but it worked for us....we used very little chocolate or strawberry syrup! Mine hated the milk white too, but if we added just a half of teaspoon to his cup, he'd drink it easily! Still do the same to this day....two years later!

I agree with breezy...if it makes them like the taste, go for it. The benefits of the milk outweigh the little bit of sugar, in the syrup. I have a recipe to make
the chocolate syrup, if you'd like it. I make it with fruictose as my son has a severe intolerance to sugar. It also has no preservatives. Let me know. :D

okay, I'll probably get bashed from this, but there is nothing in cows milk that your baby will miss if she's eating other calcium rich foods. Our middle son has never had cows milk. he drank soy for a while but couldn't tolerate it either. He drinks mainly water, sometimes has juice or tea.
but he eats calcium rick foods though.

No bashing Kana! My middle one was allergic to milk so she did't get any calcium from dairy either. You can get calcium from foods such as dark leafy greens. Milk is good for you, but if you can't drink it then your body will get it from other sources.
I have one kids that will only drink milk if it has choc. syurup in it. What ever works.....do it!

Calcium is so important, maybe if your little one isn't liking milk you should talk with your pediatrician about a calcium supplement.
Thanks ladies for your responses. I'll maybe try the chocolate syrup thing. Traci, pm me the recipe. She does get quite a bit of other calcium rich foods. She loves broccoli. And she gets a couple yogurts a day. She just loves to drink water and prefers to just drink that. So I guess if she's getting enough from the other foods than it's ok. I also try to put extra milk in her cereal and she takes it, but drinking it on it's own is a different story. We'll see if the chocolate syrup works.

Don't worry too much about the milk. If your child is eating broccoli and drinking water, you are doing something right!

Use lots lof low fat cheese or yogurt and calcium fortified juices to help bridge the gap, along with those veggies! Good luck!
