lots of dried fruit! Fiber too! Helps to add wheat germ to things for adults...sprinkle some on your salad...you don't taste it really!

Oh also if you are wanting to not take meds, Prune juice is good (if you can handle the taste) warm prune juice works even better. I personally don't like prune juice but I have started drinking a glass of Smart Start prune juice. the taste is good (not pruny) and that seems to help me out. It is kind of pricey which is the bad part.

Oh goodness, I've been searching for remedies too. I've tried everything. I've had to learn what foods I can and can not eat to help. I've tried the whole diet, water, and exercise bit too.

Mine is so bad that I've blown a disk in my lower back from such straining (sorry if tmi). It's been painful and I've been crying every day. It's beginning to heal since the inflammation in the back has gone down and the swelling in the nerve endings. Prayer for restoration has worked the best!

I had to resort to Colace and a vegetarian laxative in moderation, approved by my midwife to help. Not ideal but the only way I can get thru it for now.

I've desperately struggled with this.

Thanks for sharing....at times it can be scary not know what's going on with your body when it's all brand new.

Kefir is good too....always gets us going....it actually got Dd going regularly for the first time in her life and kept her that way! PTL!

I know Docusate, which I think is colace, is a stool softener, and it's safe. It's very gentle, so it usually works best if you haven't been very constipated a lot!

If you want to really get going, you could always eat a package of sugar free Applets and Cotlets. Seriously, they have Malitol in them, and if you eat too much, it causes very loose stools.....sadly I learned the hard way. Since I have gestational diabetes, I was looking for a treat to eat when a sugar craving came along, and I LOVE Applets and Cotlets, well I ate too many....like the whole package one night, and I had to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night...no constipation here! Not really recommending it, but hey, it works....LOL

Prune juice (can mix with OJ if you don't like the taste) or eating a few apples should help. Also lots and lots of water along with some fiber tablets can help, too.

I found out that it was the codine in Tylenol 3 that was making me constipated. I also took a natural laxative, called Senokot, a Natural Source Laxative. It helped a lot. Comes in pill form and available at most pharmacies, they recommended it since I was breastfeeding at the time.

I agree with Amber, Kieffer is a great source to help too. It's a probiotic yogurt drink. I can only find it at one local grocer so you may have to hunt for it but it's worth the look. It's a great source of protein as well.

I've also just tried the Dannon Activa yogurt and it seems to be helping.

I never thought I'd find myself becoming an "expert" on such a topic. But when it comes to this, I'm willing to listen and help! I think this a topic often not discussed and boy oh boy, it should! I had no idea it could get this bad in pregnancy. A life lesson that I still give praise for.

The Activia yogurt is working well for me!
