So as many of you already know my almost 6 year old swallowed a quarter on Saturday evening. As of this afternoon she still has yet to poop it. They told us to give it 3 days and then call to see her dr if it hadn't come out. She is supposed to be on a mostly liquid diet.

So far I've had her eating soup and then letting her eat salads and oatmeal in the hopes of moving it. Anyone have any other ideas or remedies for getting it to move it's way on out. I feel bad for the poor kidlet. [sadashamed]

oil helps lubricate things along. mineral oil (food grade) is a laxative, or any edible oil will as well..... also you could try karo syrup in water or dark brown sugar in water as well. that also helps things move. :)

My 9mos old(at the time) swollowed a plastic piece very scarey he choked bad on it, didnt know it was a plastic piece until it came out, I was putting desitin on his butt when I felt a sharp piece scratch my finger well called nurses line she told me to take him to er and the tx childrens hospital in houston did every thing they could not to laugh at me lol I felt so stupid(because they were surprised it was my 3rd child lol), they told me that the pipe that goes to the mouth to the stomach is a lot smaller than the pipes from stomach to butt so if it goes down then we don't worry about it unless its a safety pin because it can open and get hung up (somewheres he said where but don't remember lol) but my point of my story is they told me it could take a week to 1.5wks before it can come out to not worry about it, so I guess it depends on who you see and their opinion on it, and he gave me an example of a drug importer lol they swollow balloons of drugs and it takes several poops for it to come out, he said it usually takes a good packed poop for it to come out so its packed in the poop and with my son being breastfed and his poop more runny then it will probably take the 1.5 wks for it to come out, that's what my experience was....hope it comes out soon...

No advice just praying for you guys Sarah. I saw this on facebook and have been praying ever since for her and you. Did they say she has to be on a liquid diet till the quarter emerges? That must be so hard on her poor baby.

How are you dealing with this? Keep us posted on how it all works out--if you end up going in to the dr. again.

hugs and prayers

I think the suggestion of a food-style laxative is a good one (maybe add some karo syrup to a beverage). I'm familiar with several cases from my preschool teacher days. Most kids were able to pass the coins (especially pennies and dimes). That's how many parents found out about the incident in the first place. Honestly, quarters are a bit more problematic. Will continue in prayer that it passes without incident quickly.

I'm sure your doc has suggested that if there is sudden onset pain and/or BM's stop coming that you should been seen ASAP.

Our now 8yo swallowed pennies twice, 1 I didn't know about until a diaper change and the other we waited out for maybe 4 days.

So it's been 5 days and still no quarter and she hasn't pooped since Tuesday. Do you think I should keep waiting it out or go ahead and call the dr?????

i'd call the dr and ask at least. however if you haven't fed her much, then there wouldn't be much to poop out, so that might explain it. is she in pain?

I would call the doctor as well just to ask. It couldn't hurt. She may also be afraid to go as well which could slow things up possibly? Just thinking here.

Hugs, hope that dog on quarter passes soon!

She's been eating but I've been keeping it to grains and beans. Stuff that will hopefully clean her out. She says she's not in pain, but she kind of goes back and forth on that. One minute her tummy hurts then next she's okay.

Thank Renee. I keep thinking I should call the doctor. I just don't know which dr to call. I'm in the middle of trying to find a new dr since the last one ended up acting like a jerk. I just know that if she needs to be seen that it really should happen before the weekend.

That happened with us too, we needed a doctor for something and didn't have one because of sudden insurance change--had to make a quick decision. Take this time to find one maybe. Just take the plunge and call. That is what I did, and found our blessing!! And if the doctor you pick isn't one you like, you can easily switch again, just find one through recommendation of a friend or like me research one in your area that you seem to like. I just found ours with research no recommendations and it did work out.

Hugs keep us posted. Go for it Sarah! Make the call---if your nervous just do it![cheer]

Ok, so after seeing a new dr (who I really like) we had more xrays taken and the quarter never left her stomach. So a surgeon was called in because if it hadn't already passed into the colon then it wouldn't. We ended up going to one of the small university hospitals in Tulsa where they knocked her out and went through her mouth into her stomach to retrieve it. So the quarter is out now. :-D

So sorry she had to have it taken out that way but glad it's been removed without problem.

Have you ever read Curious George goes to the hospital? - would be the perfect book for what you just went through.

She says her throat hurts from time to time. I'm sure it does. She had a breathing tube and a scope down her throat. But she's playing normally. Last night she scarfed down 3 slices of pizza so I'm pretty sure she's feeling a bit better.

Oh, Sarah, I swallowed a carpet tack, a coin and a small cross when I was little. (Why would a kid do that?) Everything came out ok, thankfully.

I would have been concerned about a quarter; that's pretty big. Glad your little girl is doing better now.

E had a procedure like that done a couple of years ago as he aspirated a sunflower seed into his lungs, it will take a few days for the anaestheisia etc. to wear off and she will probably hurt. Poor thing :(

That must have been scary, glad things went smoothly and the quarter is out. Will pray for a pain free recovery.
