View Full Version : Chicken pox immunity question
BlessedMommy 10-13-2010, 07:04 AM My son came down with chicken pox! He got a fairly mild case and is healing well, so once he's over that, we should be good to go in the immunity department.
Near the beginning of his chicken pox debut, my 4 year old daughter ran a fever of about 101 degrees for a day.
I asked my doctor and she said that the virus does different things to different people. Some people's version of chicken pox is a fever and a couple spots.
So....have any of you had kids that had a extremely mild or even no spots case of chicken pox? Were they immune after that?
I'm wondering if breastfeeding for so long made my daughter's immunity to viruses stronger. Perhaps it helped my son as well, because his case is quite mild. In fact, I wasn't even 100% sure that it was chickenpox, because it wasn't severe. The doctor made that determination.
I'm just hoping that this is it for them and that they never get it again!
momofweewerfs 10-13-2010, 07:10 AM my son got it at 2, it was an average case, he gave it to his sisters. the youngest one was 7 months old and still nursing...she had it so bad..they almost hospitalized her...the oldest one who was 5 only got 10 spots on her whole body....now chicken pox went through the school last year and about 20 kids got it.but she never got it again
Madre 10-13-2010, 07:23 AM Our daughter was 7 months old and nursing when she got chicken pox from her older brothers. She had a very, very mild case with very few spots. When she was 5 and perfectly healthy, she got shingles at the base of her spine (localized) and gave chicken pox to her two younger brothers (and a few other people [whatwacko]). I don't think she developed chicken pox, though. One of the risk factors for shingles in children is if they have chicken pox before the age of 1.
I am one of those cases, Ruth! My three sibs had chicken pox when we were all little, mom says I was of breastfeeding age and I never had any symptoms... I have never had chicken pox but was recently tested for immunity and I am immune. So, obviously i had them to some degree, but it was so mild, mom didn't even know. :)
pasloma 10-13-2010, 08:51 AM I guess, like the rest of the ladies said, it must give some immunity... In my experience, I think it can be different for everyone.... I got chicken pox twice... and the weird thing is that... out of the 3 siblings, I was the one who got the worst case of chicken pox the first time... I had fever and spots and everything... and then... later... got it again... (both cases in my childhood)
so... that's me though... I am just saying... it might be different in every case... hopefully in your case.... they are now immune!

pasloma 10-13-2010, 08:59 AM oh! and by the way... when they did the testing for me -a little less than 4 yrs. ago - (when I went through tests before becoming a Resident here in the USA) showed I had no immunity and I had to get vaccinated... ugh!

NZMummy 10-13-2010, 04:35 PM I recently read up on Chicken Pox because both my kids had them. From what I read they are not really sure why some people get it more than once - it probably doesn't even relate to the severity of the first dose. Apparently my sister in law had them as a baby and only had about 5 spots - she hasn't had them since, so i suspect she was immune even after such mild symptoms. Some people just don't seem to build up the immunity even after a good dose of pox and can get it multiple times - thankfully they are the exception and most of us only have to deal with it once.
I am pleased that your kids seem to be having a mild dose - the symptoms can be horrible with a bad dose. Many kids came down with chicken pox around here this season - the immunisation for chicken pox is not commonly used over here.
Israel 11-06-2010, 04:21 AM I'm wondering why in Pasloma's case... If she had chicken pox twice and then STILL shows no immunity to it, why would they feel she needs a chicken pox vax? Is the vax supposed to be better than actually getting the illness? I had chicken pox when I was 21...it was the most miserable time in my life. I won't vax my kids for this but I do hope they are exposed to it before they are 6.
So far, it seems all our children have not had the chicken pox. Weird I know - but we homeschool - could be a big factor. We haven't given them the varicella vac - didn't want to mess with that. My childhood pox was spots and whatever - sure I itched - got that pink lotion on me and survived just fine. Didn't think we need to vac a normal childhood disease thing.
Madre 11-06-2010, 12:39 PM I wouldn't either, Julie. However, I might consider vax I (as an adult) had never had chickenpox. CP flew through our church years ago and one older teen and one adult got them.

I guess... I don't know... I think in my case they probably don't really "believe that the vax is better than the illness" or that it will make me immune (even when I got chicken pox twice and I didn't become immune) I guess they just "had to do it" to follow the "immigration process", since I didn't show immunity they had to follow the protocol and do the vaccine... that's my guess...
weird... huh?

I'm sure your right...they aren't just going to take your word for it...
Babysmith 11-06-2010, 01:32 PM Pasloma, I have some friends whose LO had all the symptoms of CP rash, fever ect they took her to the Ped who said it was CP, but because their 1 yr old is going through treament for brain cancer they took her to the hospiltal to have a blood test to confirm that it was CP and it was not. So you could have had all the symptom of CP and had it not be CP even with a Dr.'s confirmation.

melinda 11-07-2010, 08:45 PM my boys have not had chicken pox they have been vacinated because public school require it here, I had them when I was 5yrs old and have been around other children that have had them and I never got it again, I know some swear that they had chicken pox twice I guess its possible, but I have never have asked a doc that question

I doubt it just because I got it when there were CP outbreaks... The first time I got it my sister and brother got it too.... the 2nd. time several kids from my school got it and I did too... my brother and sister never got it again and they are immune, they didn't even get it when I did that second time... (and I used to sleep in the same bed my sister slept)... It's weird 'cause I was the one who got it "the worst" that first time ... Rare case I guess... :)
