So I was enjoying breastfeeding at 4+ months, thinking how simple & relaxing it is. Then WHAM, at 5 months Sawyer decides to use me for a teething toy. Ouch. No teeth yet, he just gums it and yanks. What do I do???

when my kids tried this, I literally screamed the first time. Not intentionally, just IT HURT! :-D Um, they cried and I cried and it happened rarely again. Other mommy friends say they have stuck their finger in the corner of their baby's mouth to unsuction the latch (or release the bite) and and said a quiet, but firm "no" to their babies.

I'm so sorry!!!! Ouch!

don't try to pull away. not that you have, but don't. it's painful :(
I second breaking the suction with your finger. you can also pull baby close to you making them unlatch(cause they can't breathe)

kellymom.com has terrific advice, I highly recommend looking there. I am nursing #4 and I have used that site several times with great results.

I hope this is just a little phase...

Like Kate, I yelled "ouch" out of instinct to that kind of sudden pain, baby cried, and it didn't happen again. ::snort:: That wasn't an intentional "fix", but it *did* work. Wyatt hasn't teethed on me, and he's my first baby NOT to do that. It's weird. But with my gals, I would just take my breast from them and say "no", or tell them "ouch" and break the suction and take it away. They got the idea after enough times of me doing it--- consistency is key with kids, even in this. :)

PS: I love your new avatar! :)

Man, I hope we get to that point eventually....

I like this site, too, after Jenny recommended it in another thread, lots of really good and helpful information, and I hope it's just a little phase for you, too...

I pull them into my breast so they can't breath and have to open their mouth. It just takes a second for them to realise they can't breath. Then I tell them "no that hurts mommy!" sternly. Usually works within the first couple times they do it.

Was on thebump.com this morning and sounds like something a few on there have done:

Pretty much the same here! Just saying OUCH surprised them and the babe would start crying alittle for the suddenness. And then break suction.
Maybe a warning, Jen? My boy didn't bite until he already had a couple teeth - double ouch![crybawl]

To be honest, it took until 3 months for it to finally feel natural and relaxing. Praying you soon reach that point!!
