I was curious.... do any of your children have any food sensitivities that you know of? We are thinking DD must be sensitive to wheat (through the breast milk). EVERY time I eat it (even having only about half a serving of crackers yesterday), she seems to have a really hard time with her stomach and is pretty fussy off and on.

Yep!

Gluten intolerance and low grade lactose intolerance. I am gluten intolerant and it seems to have passed down. When I tried eating "regular", I had severe headaches which led to stroke like symptoms that landed me in the ER. My naturopath thinks that I'm probably celiac. I did the gluten trial in order to take medical celiac tests and had to quit early due to the severe headaches/hospitalization, so I'm inclined to agree with her. Just a few days of getting minute amounts of gluten (cross contamination) on something that was other gluten free seems to bother me.

My daughter will break out in a rash around her mouth if she gets bread. My son's intolerance seems to not be as bad as hers, thankfully.

Do you have a history of gluten intolerance/celiac disease in your family? They say that the odds of having celiac are 1 in 133. If you have a family member with celiac, that odds goes up to 1 in 22.

And of course, as you know, you can be gluten intolerant and not have celiac. You may want to check out a naturopath or some other sort of practitioner that can give some tests to shed some light on what your DD might be intolerant/sensitive to.

I am adopted so do not know of anything in my biological family (have limited medical information). DH and I both are sensitive to wheat. He is sensitive to gluten. I am also sensitive to yeast. No one in his family is aware of any sensitivities, but they have never considered it. No one is severely sensitive or allergic to anything. To our knowledge, there is no celiac history in either of our families.

Can they do tests on a baby? And if so, what kinds? If she does not have any severe symptoms, I think I would rather wait until we introduce solids. Our nutritionist that took us through the ED will help us introduce those to her in such a way that we should be able to figure it out for sure then. I have just noticed she seems to have definite symptoms (acts like her stomach is bothering her, more than usual spit up, more than usual fussiness) after I have eaten bread and crackers. I don't eat a whole lot of wheat/gluten/yeast myself because of my own sensitivity, but I can have limited amounts.

I would guess that her sensitivity, if we are right on this, may be more severe (since only a small serving of crackers seemed to really bother her) OR it could be more severe at this point since she is only a little over 4 weeks old.

I did get tests done on my kids--electro dermal tests at the naturopath. I imagine that they could also do blood and saliva tests, also.

low grade lactose intolerance.

So how did you know this was an issue... symptoms before the testing? Did any of your children show signs that you saw when you were bf'ing?

One time when I had pizza when my DD was an infant, she screamed until the wee hours of the morning. IDK if that was the cheese or something else.

The main problem was skin rashes. Her skin is a lot better (although not perfect) now that she's off of gluten and most dairy.

I get nasal congestion and my allergies get worse if I have much dairy, so it wasn't too surprising about the kids.

Yep... same thing with me, too much dairy makes my allergies go nuts.

I had some chowder my husband made yesterday that had heavy cream in it. Last night when I fed her, right after she ate every time she stopped eating (would put her back on the breast and then when she'd come off again) she spit up quite a bit (more than usual) and her stomach seemed to bother her for a little bit (didn't last long though). It's gotten better since that initial feeding last night when it started, but I think she has spit up some at every feeding since, but not every time she comes off the breast in a feeding. Does that make sense? I don't think it is a severe sensitivity, but I'm thinking there is something there and maybe it's just her immature digestive system and we'll be able to try it again in a few weeks.

Don't gluten and dairy sensitivities sometimes go hand in hand? I know DH and DS are slightly sensitive to gluten but not dairy, and gluten does not bother me while dairy does, but I thought I read that people with gluten problems commonly also have problems with dairy. Could be wrong though.......

Lot of celiac people are also sensitive to dairy. Reason being that the destruction of the intestinal villi makes it harder to digest the dairy as well, IIRC.
