View Full Version : Can babies be too chubby?

My little girl seems to get rounder by the day. And lots of people comment on her big tummy. She is three months old - and is exclusively breast fed. She just seems to be growing before my eyes. I tend to think that a for a baby to be chubby is nice and healthy (and that she will probably loose some of it once she starts moving) - maybe I am just surprised because I was expecting to have a really petite tiny girl (like I was as a baby). And also I didn't expect her to get quite so big from breast milk only. Do you think that babies can be too chubby?

Katherine gets chunky and then has a growth spurt so then she thins out again...

Unless you are talking REALLY HUGE and obese, I think it's totally normal. babies are supposed to have chubs. it makes them cute! :) I really doubt a baby is going to be overly chubby on just breastmilk anyhow... and some babies are just chubbier than others.

Katherine's cousin was REALLY chubby, and someone said that her mom ought to take her to a doctor and have her checked out because she had a disorder!! which was totally UNTRUE and a mean thing to say. As soon as she started walking she thinned right out. she just happened to be a particularly chubby baby, but she's no worse for wear.

I would get comments on my babies being chubby. They never looked overly chubby to me and the ped would always say they are fine. I breastfeed my babies too so i don't think them getting overweight is a problem. Their are chubbier babies then others and like cheeseburger said that is what makes them cute, their squeezeable chubby cheeks! :D

Chubby babies are so cute! And once they start walking and running they will run it off. Stephanie :D

Look on the bright side - mine were all scrawny, skinny, petite (but absolutely gorgeous!) little babies, and nearly every older lady at church would comment on "Does she eat okay?" and "Are you feeding him enough?". It was totally said in love and concern, but annoying, none the less!
I think babies come in all shapes and sizes. My friend has a little 8 month old girl who weighs a whopping 25 lbs (only 3 lbs less than my scrawny little almost 3 year old!!) and she is still exclusively breastfed, except for the last month getting a little pablum at night.
As long as she's healthy, I wouldn't worry!

Thanks for all your comments.

Yes, I think that my chubby bubby is just adorable :D . She is not REALLY huge yet - I just thought that she is putting on weight at such a fast rate that she might be heading that way... and I was interested to know whether anyone ever worries about excess weight in breastfed babies.

Katherine gets chunky and then has a growth spurt so then she thins out again....
I think maybe this will be the case with Jenna too - it makes sense. Come to think of it, some days she looks more chubby than others.

One of my sons is well within normal ranges for weight for his age, but he still has a potbelly, two or three chins, big chubby cheeks, and dimples everywhere- even on his wrists and fingers. :D

That's just the way God designed them! :D Once they're toddlers it disappears soooo fast!

Ditto the above...
A chubby baby is a healthy well fed baby :)

My eldest was an exclusively breastfed child and at 4 months...weighed 24# He was gaining 1# a week for those first 4 months and at least close to that for a couple more months following. Then he reached 30 and stayed there FOREVER. He began moving around, learned to walk, all that kind of stuff, as well as grew in height. So, he worked off a lot of it and stretched out. It's all good hehe
He's now a rather slim 9.5 yr old.

Then my girl..she started out a teeny 7#, I don't remember her weights, but she too 'chunked up' and is now a stout 3 yr old. Not fat by any means, just a stout, solid thing.

Again, I agree with the others. Unless we're talking h-u-g-e, sounds like normal healthy breastfed baby :) That's what we WANT to see *grins* and she'll work it off, stretch out, grow into it all before you know it.

Now of course, you realize you have us all just DYING to see this chunky little cuteness :D

I think someone may have already said this... I've always heard that breastfed babies are usually a little chubbier because the milk is so rich and healthy. Pretty much everyone I know who breastfed had a chubbier (in a healthy way [lovesmile] ) baby who thinned out after they discontinued bf'ing. Seems like a good sign. When they become more active and mobile and you start seeing big growth spurts, their bodies can sustain them better. [OK]

I'm with everyone else... I think chubby babies are so cute and kissable.

A lady at my LLL group has an exclusively b/f baby (no solids) that's 10 months and he's a big one (about 30lbs)! Her dr said he's absolutely fine and perfect. Just as we are, everybody's different.

I actually have nicknames for my kids, based on their chub. Audrey was Chunky Monkey, and Tory is Chubba Wubba. Audrey is little Miss Skinny Minny, now that she's more active. I expect the same from Tory, although, at 9 months and 21 lbs, she only weighs about 6 lbs less than her 2-1/2 year old sister! Lol, if it weren't for the height thing, they could share clothes!

Like everyone else has said, breastfed babies tend to be a little chubbier. I wouldn't worry about it if your pediatrician isn't worried. Just love and kiss all those sweet chunky fat rolls around her belly. Once your babe starts crawling and walking, they're going to disappear!
