View Full Version : SCARIEST experience of my life!!

My baby gave me a HUGE scare last evening... I was SO glad Mom was here with me because I seriously don't know what I would have done otherwise! She had a MEGA puking incident which was a first for her. She hasn't spit up at all since she's born...or at least not enough that I ever noticed. Anyways, she had puke EVERYWHERE so I decided to give her a bath to clean her up. When I went to wash her hair she started crying a LOT so I snuggled her up to me just a little. All of the sudden I realized she was choking...long story short...it lasted about 15 minutes and we ALMOST lost my precious little girl. At one point she could barely breathe and had gone all limp... She acted like she was just giving up. It was the SCARIEST thing I have EVER experienced in my life!!! I totally thought I was going to lose my precious baby! I thought maybe I was over-reacting until I realized Mom was just as shook up as I was... I put in a call to the hospital and they gave me a number to call a triage nurse. She ended up being a COMPLETE jerk and was like well if it happens again, just sit her up & pat her back... I could tell she thought I was totally out of my mind for thinking that this isn't normal...and yeah, I wasn't very nice to her! Now we're worried about an infection in her lungs since she obviously got some in there. Last night Mom or I held her ALL night! After it was all over I just held her & bawled...I couldn't believe I came that close to losing her! I just couldn't let my precious baby go...she is getting spoiled rotten and I don't care! She didn't sleep good last night but seems much more her usual self today. This whole thing did a number to my milk supply, but so far I still have enough. Please pray that she doesn't get an infection and that this doesn't happen again! I'm completely exhausted today and Mom & I are doing nothing all day...besides loving up on Ashlyn. She's eating better today and hasn't thrown up at all since then, but has been burping a LOT. Thanks for the prayers!

Oh, hon, how awful. I'm really glad your little angel is okay now. [hug]

Here are a few things: First, if you think she *might* have even a *slight* case of pneumonia, take her in to her ped.. :-D Second, if she's not getting enough oxygen and you notice her pallor change or she becomes limp or lethargic, OR if her breathing becomes labored, take her in. And third, if she begins 'throwing up' often, she needs to go in. I'm not talking about spitting up, but throwing up most of what she's eating. She could have a blockage.

My Courtney had what's called Pyloric Stenosis when she was born. She had an almost complete intestinal blockage. She threw up (not spit up) increasingly as the days progressed. As it was, I had a horrible time getting her to eat at all, which turned out to be because her tummy wasn't draining well. Her doctor just blew me off until she was 6 weeks old.

We ended up taking her to the hospital where they did an ultrasound and even I could see the olive-sized blockage. She was then rushed to Children's Hospital where she was admitted as a code white emergency (pediatric life and death emergency) due to severe dehydration. She had a simple surgery to fix the problem. :-D

Pyloric Stenosis isn't a rare condition, but it does usually occur in first born boys for some reason. Courtney was my third born... girl. hehe!

Your concerns were valid, even if it turns out to be nothing. Trust your mommy's instinct, and if your babe has any more episodes, insist on having her checked out. Better safe than sorry. [lovesmile]

I know that fear, only mine was my own fault when I left my 16 month old son in a bath for a few minutes and came back to him underwater and limp...Such a terrible fear! If she chokes again you can flip her upside down with her belly laying on the underside of your forearm and pat/hit her back. Gravity will help clear it out. I totally agree with Joy if it keeps happening or if her color gets a little blue I would take her to her ped. or the ER if it's an emergency. I would call your ped anyways on monday and see if you cant get in to see someone if you are still having fear or mama instincts

Oh how terrible and scary! [hug] I'm glad that she is okay now. Please take her into the ER at anytime that you think she needs to go, regardless of what some nurse told you. Mommies know best!

PTL she is ok!

I had a coworker a few years ago whose son had to have surgery for pyloric stenosis, if there is any possibility it could be that she should be treated right away.
Gabrielle didn't have that but when she was first born but she kept choking on what we thought was her own saliva, it turned out she had swallowed some of the amniotic fluid and then ended up having to put a tube down her throat to suction it out. It scared me to death that first night when she was gagging like that, I couldn't even talk about it, I think dh told my parents what had happened. I think I will block it out again now!

Praying for you & Ashlyn; I also agree that if it starts to happen again please take her to the ER stat and talk to your ped on Mon even if it doesn't happen again this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up on that one!! I really have NO idea what caused her throw up...and yeah...it wasn't "spitting up"... It was projectile VOMITING! Like I didn't even know her little tummy could hold that much! Of course an oz or 2 looks like a lot more when it comes up like that. I'll keep my eyes open for any signs of ANYTHING! So far we haven't had any more incidents! PTL!

I am so sorry for your experience! It's so so so scary!!!! And yeah...I told mom I'm scared I bruised the poor baby's back...I was holding her tummy down smacking her back. Mom was smacking her feet... Especially when it seemed like she just gave up. It was the most helpless feeling, but I think instincts just kind of kick in at a time like that.

Oh how terrible and scary! [hug] I'm glad that she is okay now. Please take her into the ER at anytime that you think she needs to go, regardless of what some nurse told you. Mommies know best!
I talked to my AMAZING nurse last evening and she wanted me to bring her in. I took her to Urgent Care and they checked her VERY well and found NOTHING:) I was never so happy to hear that I went to the dr for "nothing"!! She was really fussy yesterday and I have a feeling it was just a combination of me not being relaxed AT ALL and her still not feeling too great. Her nose sounded really stuffy and I think it was probably just raw and maybe a little swollen from everything. The nurse at Urgent Care was ABSOLUTELY awesome and told me to bring her in if ANYTHING changes. PTL for great nurses!! I felt much better when I left there:) She also said that if anything was going to show up it should have by now...definitely to keep watching but that within 24 hours we should have known something. This morning Ashlyn seems much more relaxed and I think I have my happy baby back!!

I SO know what you mean!!! The only people I told was on my Mommy board! It terrifies me to even think about it...*hugs* to you too!!

Thanks ladies for all the prayers!!

Im so glad your little girl is ok now. Do keep an eye on her like Joy said.

Im sure we all have scary stories about our babies. I hope she is well and nothing more comes of it. How rude of that nurse tho.

I'm sorry you had that experience - experiences like that can leave a mother on edge for days. I'm so pleased that you had such a great nurse this time though. Praise God that her check up showed up no problems.

YES!!! My heart skipped a beat today when she threw up again...its not "spit up"...its like projectile vomit!! This time wasn't as bad and it didn't come out of her nose like the last time...poor lil girl! I have a dr appt tomorrow so I'll definitely be mentioning it to her!

How scary. My youngest daughter projectile vomited and she ended up having GERD. Her esophagus was a bit underdeveloped. You could try sitting her upright after she eats and maybe it will help.

So far we haven't had any more incidents! PTL!

I haven't been able to do much on the computer lately... have had some difficult days with a lot of fussiness, more than usual spitting up after feedings, and trying to figure out some possible food connections, but I'm SO, SO glad to read your update and see that things seem better. Please update after you doctor's appointment! I can only imagine how scary it must have been and so glad she seems okay now. Hope you have a good doctor's appointment, too!

I've actually wondered a little about acid reflux or something down that line... If she does have it, its extremely mild...I mean she's thrown up a total of 3 times since she was born and the most recent time was probably 4 days ago. She burps REALLY hard and I think that's the big problem, so we're working with that!

Sorry to hear about your rough days!! Hopefully that gets better soon!
The dr appointment was great! Thanks for asking:)
She gained half a pound in a week, so I'd say she's doin' great:) The midwife was really happy with everything...she says baby is doing great!

We're doing good...except for the night/day thing. I'm SO glad I have Mom here so I can get some sleep:) Ashlyn is such a good baby and nurses so well...I feel incredibly blessed! Even when she is a awake at night, she's happy if you hold her...so its not like we pace the floor with a screaming baby all night or anything. She's a total snugglebug so it makes it way too much fun and way too easy to spoil her rotten;)
