If you make your own baby food, do you do anything special other than just boiling and pureeing it? This is my first time making my own baby food and so far she does not like any of it - I just boil and mash /puree it - she didn't like the carrots, the green beans or the corn in baby food form. She didn't even like blueberries in baby food form! Maybe she doesn't like being spoon fed? I am not sure.

She will eat blueberries and green beans if i put them whole inside of a baby safe feeder (that mesh bag baby feeding thing) And peaches she can eat all on her own, I just slice it up and she eats it like that. She also really likes the pizza sauce I make with spinach in it.

She is really curious about everything we eat so I try to make sure she gets a softer, plainer version of it, but mostly she just mashes it in her mouth and spits it right back out. Sometimes she will really eat, but usually she seems more interested in mashing it in her hands and making a mess. If she were younger I would not mind but she is almost 1 and I would think she would be eating a little bit more by now. Does anyone else have a baby that was slow to warm up to solids?

PS: I forgot to mention that we tried bananas 2x, a few weeks apart and both times she threw them up almost immediately so we will not be trying those again. She hasn't thrown anything else up like that.

I know a fair bit about this stuff because my prem baby Hayley has spent alot of time with the Speech Therapist regarding solid food.
At what age did your baby start on solids? Was she born early at all? Has she been eating commercial baby food?

Personally, I would just let her have a bit of whatever you're having. Be it spoon feeding or self-feeding, just kind of let her lead the way.

It sounds like she wants to eat what the big people are eating.

For the record, my DD didn't really get into eating solids until after a year, probably closer to 15 months or so. Some kids are just slower. I wouldn't sweat it.

Micah is a huge eater and took way off on solids. On average he eats as much or more than my 4 year old!

Do you season your food a bit? If you are seasoning your food she is used to is and the plain pureed food might be to bland for her. Try adding a bit of spice and she might accept it.

That said my kids really never took to baby food so I just gave up. Both of them started eating what we ate at 10 months with no problems. No teeth and no problems. They just gummed it to death.

Kristy - she was not born early and has never had commercial baby food that comes in jars. Recently I did let her try one of those Gerber puff things and she spit it right out. I don't remember when I started letting her taste our food, I just started as soon as she started grabbing for what was on our plates but I don't remember what age that was. Maybe 6 or 7 mos?

Ruth, I do let her have bits of what we eat at meals but that is the stuff she tastes and then spits out so she is not really getting of that in her belly (at least not as far as I can tell).

LOL about gumming it to death, Sarah. S, my middle baby, never liked baby food BUT he could always eat big people food with no problems. My oldest was slow to warm up to big people food but liked baby food. Maybe since she has tasted some seasoned food the plain stuff is yucky to her now? I guess I could try pureeing what we are eating seasons and all instead of giving her a plainer version of it.
