View Full Version : Be Careful About Cartoon Network
mamallama 08-27-2010, 01:31 PM I know we had a thread on here a while back about Nick shows and online games that were inappropriate. Well today I have another one to add to the list - Cartoon Network.
My son saw a commercial advertising Scooby Doo games that you could play online. So when I went to look them up, I saw a new Scooby Doo show called Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated. I clicked to watch it and had to turn it off within the first two minutes. It showed teenagers in the backseat of car being taken to a dance. The girl snuggles up to the guy provocatively and boasts about being taken to the prom by lots of other guys. But she wanted him to know that she thinks he was "the one." (obvious sexual reference there) :-O I was mortified because my four-year-old son was sitting next to me! I couldn't turn it off fast enough. What in the world was Cartoon Network thinking turning what used to be a harmless SD cartoon into something so R-rated for young kids?!
I think this pretty much confirms what I have already been thinking.....no more tv for the kids. We hardly ever let them watch anything as it is because most of the cartoons on nowadays are filling our childrens' minds with junk. But from now on they can stick to Netflix and DVDs. I mean, none of us hardly ever watch tv anyway. It almost seems useless to have except for in bad weather. *sigh*
Babysmith 08-27-2010, 01:40 PM I have never like Scooby I was a nanny for a family that watched it alot and I have always been very bothered by the amount of adult themes and references to witch craft and the occult. I desided be for I had kids that Scooby was out for us.

~Tara~ 08-27-2010, 02:44 PM I despise CN as a whole anyway...so this is not all that surprising to me. Sorry you had to find out that WITH the 4yr old :( but thanks for the heads up
And I agree...tv for kids is worthless. We'll stick to our family shows like Wipeout, AFV, Home Makeover ..... but even those we gotta have our finger on the remote when commercials hit because you never know what you'll get...the smut that airs following those shows and such *blech*
His butterfly 08-27-2010, 03:32 PM It makes me so happy that we canceled our satellite service. It really goes to show that there is nothing good on tv anymore.
Nichole 08-27-2010, 04:18 PM I was fllipping thru channels this weekend looking for something to watch and saw that Scooby was on. I stopped to watch for a second and they were at a concert. The band on stage was a bunch of girls singing "We're the hex girls and we're gonna put a spell on you" Needless to say I changed the channel! I warned my hubby not to let our boys watch Scooby. I don't think they ever have but I wanted my hubby to know about it just in case. Very sad!
mumof3boyz 08-27-2010, 04:23 PM When I read these things, I'm so glad we don't have TV in our home. We do let the boys watch some stuff online, e.g. Wipeout, How it's Made, Destroyed in Seconds, and some Youtube, but that has to be highly supervised too... some of the kids' videos on YT get hijacked by sickos... I learned this the hard way when DS started saying some alarming words and he admitted it had been on an "innocent" kids video.

It really is so sad that this is what the world has come to. [sadashamed]
rachel 08-27-2010, 09:54 PM Wowzers. Anyone remember the days when the most contro thing in cartoons was how "violent" some of the Looney Tunes were? Those anvils look like flowers now!
pasloma 08-28-2010, 08:45 AM We do not have any satellite service here either... and I am pretty happy with Qubo channel.... I am sorry you found that right next to your 4yr. old... but I am glad you found it.... IYKWIM ... Many parents don't really pay attention to what their kids watch or don't even think is harmful.... I am truly satisfied with qubo.... (for secular cartoons) ... the "worst message" I've found is the "believe in yourself" phrase all the cartoons mention... all the time... but.... I mean.... that's nothing compared to what others show... it's my job to teach my kids to believe in Jesus... who is IN them.... :)
Thanks for sharing your findings Becca!!
Paloma.

I agree, cartoons have become pretty bad. We mutually agreed when we first got married to be a "no TV" home, but we do let my daughter watch approved Christian kids programs on our laptop. Much easier to monitor that way and no commercials!
Wow - how can it get any worse! It makes me sick thinking what my nieces and nephews have been watching - yikes!
Glad we don't have tv - just watch dvds. [clapping]
teelee 09-03-2010, 04:36 PM Becca, have you found the old Scooby Doo's to be inappropriate? Eldest was watching a newer Scooby Doo today through the instant Netflix and I made him change to another show. He didn't protest much but wasn't happy. It was talking about people sacrificing themselves and voodoo. Just didn't think that was a good thing to watch. I remember the old Scooby Doo's that I watched as a kid. I didn't think they were that bad.
Anyone have comment on Tom and Jerry?
Paloma, we also have Qubo with our antenna. The boys love that channel and I feel safe about what they watch on it.
Kristyau 09-03-2010, 05:36 PM We don't let our kids watch secular TV anymore. In Australia we only have ABC kids TV that is specifically for kids. However it has ALOT of witchcraft and shows where the kids are very disrespectful to their parents, and also plenty of romance. Thankfully we have satellite dish for all the Christian channels only. We only allow our kids to watch some TV on the weekends and it can only be approved DVDs or the Smile of a Child network (Christian kids TV). What I find most difficult though, is when they go to grandparent's houses for holidays and get to watch all kids of yucky stuff. Really bothers me, but the grandparents won't listen to us. However, when MIL was watching SpongeBob with the kids and SpongBob started 'killing' all the baby sea creatures, MIL was horrified and banned them from watching that show at least.

Tiffany, if you are concerned about ghost and monsters with your kids, even the older Scooby Doo cartoons might be too much for them. But honestly it was nothing ever too bad from what I remember....no witchcraft or otherwise inappropriate themes. They always captured the bad guy and took their disguise off in the end. So I felt they were pretty harmless. You would just have to watch one to see what you are comfortable with for your family. :)
As for Tom and Jerry. We've always loved them as well. I don't know much about the newer one though.
teelee 09-07-2010, 07:00 AM Thanks Becca. That's how I remember the old Scooby Doo shows too. It's just been such a long time.:-D
leona 09-12-2010, 03:46 PM I agree with Becca the old scooby doo is fine , but not the new one's my mum watched one with the kiddie's and it was more on the occult side , hence to say it was turned off.
mamallama 09-12-2010, 03:57 PM Hubby and I discussed this and other issues we were having with tv. In the end, we decided to get rid of all the extra channels. It saves us $20 a month and we aren't exposed those sorts of things anymore. We just have basic now. It was actually *less* expensive to keep basic and internet than to to chunk cable all together and keep internet. But it won't change things around here as we rarely watch television. But it feels good. :)
Leanna Kay 09-22-2010, 11:02 AM Commercials on regular TV can be even worse. What are they thinking?:(
