OK girls, any tips on managing asthma? Youngest ds has asthma, and gets croup (even though he's over 5, so they call it something else, but it's still the same as croup) every winter, needing steroids to get it under control [sadashamed].

I'm not about to stop his meds, 'cause, you know, breathing is kinda a necessary thing in a kid's life, lol!

I'm more looking for info on improving his health/immune system. See, his main asthma "trigger" is colds/viruses. So, I figure if I can improve his general health and immunity, we will hopefully cut down on asthma episodes, in turn cutting down on meds!

With the croup, when he gets it, it's bad. Bad as in needing a trip to the hospital, has turned blue around the lips, etc. So, in that case there is no choice at all, he needs the meds. There is no "wait and see" option when that happens.

So, I figure my best option is to strengthen him so that he is less likely to get these viruses in the first place! Any info (beyond the usual increase his fruit and veggie intake) specific to the immune and/or respiratory system would be appreciated!

Thanks ladies :-D

I will be keeping an eye on this, too as my ds has asthma and I would like to avoid going to the ER every winter, when it is at its worst. I wish this summer weather would never end!
Moving to a dry hot climate is not an option right now, but hopefully will be in the future.

I have heard things about tumeric helping, but it doesn't seem like there is enough info out there to safely use it in high does for kids - I just cook with it as I always did even before I heard about it supposedly being used to prevent asthma issues.
