View Full Version : Burping the baby
Jessy 06-17-2010, 08:25 PM Anyone have a babe that is hard to burp? Oldest was an easy burper, a couple pats to the back would do it when needed. Dawson on the other hand is so hard to get a burp out of, I can tell when he has a bubble in there, he gets squirmy and fussy, particularly when I lay him down, then sure enough up it comes with tons of spit-up. I've tried burping him on the shoulder, patting him on the back, across the lap, etc. it just doesn't work well.
Anyone have suggestions?
4HisGlory 06-17-2010, 08:46 PM my 1st was a harder burper. We had to do it in this pattern, Really really hard (like we were beating the poor little fella) pats on the back and then switch to rubbing in circles hard. We kept alternating until finally when we were doing the circles he would start whining and wimpering. Once his noises got loud enough we knew the burp would be close and finally it would come.
jen1981 06-18-2010, 01:43 AM I have had 1 easy burper and 3 hard ones. This worked with all the hard ones. Sit the baby sideways on your lap, supporting their head with your hand under their chin if necessary. Lean them forward. Rub firmly on their bacK, starting at the bottom and going to the top, lift your hand up, go back to the bottom and go up again with a couple firm pats at the top. Also, I found that burping them at least twice during a feeding helped to make them burp easier and spit up less. I guess there wasn't as much milk on top of the air. Hope this helps! :)
Have you tried putting baby to your shoulder, or in your lap, and rubbing up his sides firmly, starting at his hip? This has worked for every one of my babies. Starting at the hip, rub in and up, firmly, until you reach *under* the armpit. I do some patting inbetween sweeps and it works like a charm.
~Tara~ 06-18-2010, 01:47 PM ditto the 'moving up' methods
and as you have him sitting on your lap, leaned over a hand, rock him back and forth a couple times between pats...you know, lay him back, then forward over his toes...then pat/rub some more
mumof3boyz 06-18-2010, 04:58 PM Sawyer is EXTREMELY hard to burp and has been slightly colicky because of it. I've taken him to the chiropractor (which has helped immensely, btw) and she showed me how to hold him higher on your shoulder (facing toward you) so your shoulder is pressing into his tummy. It works like a charm *most* of the time; sometimes all I need to do is put him up there and out comes a nice healthy belch! :D Just make sure you support his head when he's that high. ;)
in the special care nursery I learned the sitting up burp.
place one hand cradling the chin/neck from the front and supporting the head.
the other hand, put on baby's back and make baby sit up straight and lean forward a little. then you can bounce your leg or pat as needed.
you can use the bottom up methods that have already been described with this position.
Jessy 06-19-2010, 12:42 PM Thanks gals! I have tried the sitting up method with chin in hands, rubbing up the back. I haven't tried rubbing up the sides to the armpits, will try that, thanks Jen! :)
I've heard that some are harder to burp than others, glad to hear I'm not alone! :)
Margi-I remember learning the belly to shoulder trick but somehow haven't thought of it, will try that as well!
