I was on Wikipedia and looked up "pregnancy" for fun and an interesting cultural tradition was mentioned:

In Korea, China, and Vietnam, age is measured starting from conception to acknowledge that the baby exists within the mother’s body before it is born. Therefore, a newborn baby is considered to be one year old.

I wonder if this practice is still observed? I wish more people did that here...

They do this in Thailand also. My brother lives there and has a son who is Thai.. he is the same age as my 3 year old daughter but they consider him to be 4. They also rarely use the name on their birth certificate because they are so long.. they use nicknames that are very short.

When I was growing up I had a Korean friend who was born 2 months before me- but she always used to say she was a year older than me. Of course being a kid- I thought she was just saying that because she wanted to be older...that's funny that it is true.

Just the other day my husband was thinking that it didn't make since for us not to go by conception date age, so it is funny you just posted this, I will have to tell him.

I had heard of that before. I, too, wonder if it is truly done, like on official documents and such. :? If the whole world took that approach maybe the horrors of abortion wouldn't be so common place. Then again..who knows.
